We see pets that have swallowed unusual objects every year. This is known a pica. Our pets explore with their noses and sometimes will swallow objects by accident.

Luna swallowed a tennis ball which was sitting in her stomach. Luckily Luna’s owners noticed and bought her to the surgery. The ball has been successfully removed and Luna is recovering well. She doesn’t plan to eat anymore tennis balls in the future. 💚

🧨Fireworks🧨
We understand that lots of our furry friends don’t enjoy the firework season. We are here to help make it as stress free as possible for you and your pet. Please contact the practice if your pet is frightened and we can advise on supplements, medications and methods which can help.

To help your pet, please ensure:
- Your pet is microchipped🪪
- You walk your dog during daylight hours 🐕‍🦺
- They have a safe enclosed space or den to hide🛖
- Stay relaxed and don’t react to the fireworks yourself🧘🏼‍♂️
- Play the radio or TV to muffle the sound 📻

🚨It’s grass seed season 🚨

If your dog has a grass seed stuck they may:
- Excessively bite and lick the area, especially between the toes
- Shake their head and scratch their ear
- Have a swollen eye and be squinting

To avoid this please don’t let your dog run area in areas with long grass. To reduce the risk of grass seeds you can check your dog after walk and groom them regularly. 🌱🌱🌱

⚠️ Lungworm ⚠️

Lungworm is a parasitic worm that slugs and snails carry. Unfortunately, the South East sees a high proportion of lungworm cases in the UK. Within a 50 mile radius of St Albans 1622 cases in dogs have been reported 🐌

The parasite lives in the heart and blood vessels of an infected animal where it lays eggs that get carried into the lungs 🫁

Lungworm can easily be prevented by using monthly flea and worming treatment 💊

As our pets age they can develop arthritis. Librela is a monthly injection which helps to alleviate pain by targeting the Nerve Growth Factor, a key player in arthritis pain. It has minimal impact on the liver, kidneys and gastrointestinal tract. 🦴

There has been a supply shortage of Librela for a while but good news!- It is back in stock from next week. Please contact us for more information. 📞
