Outside of these times you will need to obtain emergency veterinary care from our out of hours veterinary provider. On 1 December 2022 we will change from our current out of hours provider to MiNightVet Newquay.

This is the beautiful Poppy who came to us recently for a dental procedure. Poppy is a retired greyhound. We think she intentionally lost her 30 races so she could live a life of luxury with her devoted owner.
Retired greyhounds make fantastic pets. Almost no grooming is required and they need very little exercise. However, you do need a big sofa!

Some of you may remember that our practice cat has been on a weight loss diet. She has now lost 1/2 kilo, which for a cat is a lot of weight.
We also need to admit that we didn't check her gender when she first came to us, assuming that she was male since most ginger cats are male. (The ginger gene must be attached to the X chromosome. Since males only have one X chromosome, they only need one ginger gene to be a ginger tom. However, females have two X chromosomes so need two ginger genes to become a ginger queen; thus it is much more likely for a ginger cat to be a male cat.)
However, in this case, our practice cat Luigi is now Lucy! Whoops! Regardless, she is doing great on her diet and is already moving around much more easily. We are so pleased with her progress.
Our vet's son has created a graph to chart Lucy's weight loss. We suggest you try this at home with your own pets. It is a helpful way to see how you and your dieting pet are progressing.

We like to keep our patients nice and warm! Anaesthetics can lower a patient's temperature and this can lead to lowered blood pressure and decreased immunity. If you collect a pet after an operation, make sure you keep them cosy and toasty for the next 24 hours post-surgery.

This bunny came to us because he had stopped eating. Rabbits need to eat and defecate constantly. If you notice that your rabbit has stopped, at either end, please book a vet appointment as soon as possible.
We can give them an injection to get things moving again.
This bunny had a jab, was encouraged to exercise, given some fresh greens and was 100% by the next day! 🐰🐰

This beautiful cat came in for a dental procedure the other day. Did you know that you can brush your cat's teeth? Do not try to pry open the mouth but slip in a baby-size toothbrush along the side.
‼Only use pet toothpaste as human toothpaste is toxic to dogs and cats.‼
Start slowly, only brushing one tooth at first giving lots of praise and maybe a treat or two. Gradually build up to brushing all the teeth on the cheek side - do not brush on the tongue side of the teeth, this is not necessary.
Brushing teeth is the best dental care you can provide for your dog or cat. Chews do not contribute to gum health. Give it a try! You will be surprised at how easy it is. If you need assistance, please book a nurse appointment for advice. 😁

When we remove lumps from a pet, we usually send the tissue to a lab for histology. However, sometimes we look at the tissue in-house. As we are not pathologists, we cannot make a diagnosis but we do see some interesting things!

Strawberry came in to be castrated recently. It is a really good idea to neuter your cats as young as possible as this helps prevent the spread of serious and often fatal diseases. Feline leukemia and Feline immunodeficiency virus and both spread by fighting and sexual activity.

This dog is suffering from Flea Allergic Dermatitis. When a dog or cat has this condition, even one flea bite can throw them into a frenzy of scratching and chewing. Pets develop a flea allergy by being exposed to fleas for a continuous period of time. This prompts us to nip any flea problems in the bud! If you suspect your pet has fleas please use a veterinary-based flea product on all the pets in the home and also spray your house and car. We recommend that you wash all pet bedding on a regular basis and hoover as often as possible. Don't let this happen to your beloved pet! If you need any advice, please contact the surgery.

Practice cat Luigi is doing really well on his diet! He has already lost 0.2kg. That may not sound like much but cats need to lose weight slowly or they can develop liver problems. We are so pleased with Luigi's progress and hope he sticks to his diet plan.

Harvey had x-rays with us recently as he was a little lame. The radiographs did not reveal any fractures so we believe Harvey has a soft-tissue injury. The main treatment for sprains and strains is rest and non-steroidal anti-inflammatories. However, you can use heat, massage and physiotherapy exercises. We can also offer laser treatment at our practice. Please contact us if you would like guidance on helping your dog's or cat's injuries. Our nurse has a certificate in physiotherapy and we have also had huge success with use of laser therapy.

This beautiful bullfinch was brought into our practice after being attacked by a cat. We are happy to take injured birds. Please put them in a cardboard box with breathing holes and keep them warm during transport to the practice. Handle the bird as little as possible. Birds can die from stress very easily and they do find people quite scary.
