Have a great summer.

St Austell Bay Dog Training Club This Club no longer runs the Kennel Club Good Citizen Dog Scheme. We use non-punitive methods which are not based on dominance.

We do however run a new-style 8-week Foundation course which focuses on understanding your dog. Over the duration of the course there will be a short chat each week about why your dog may be responding in a particular way to a situation and what we can do to help them through any difficulties they have. We will also, of course, cover basic obedience to keep your dog safe. All dogs must have formed
a bond with their owner/handler before any real learning can take place. Your dog must feel safe and trust your choices. Not all Socialisation is good for your dog, so you need to understand what your dog requires to have a secure and contented life. At the end of the 8-week course, it is our aim to have covered:
Socialisation
Heelwork
Control - gateways and food
Play
Recalls
Examination of all areas of their bodies
Stays
Successful completion of the course will result in a certificate and rosette awarded by the Club. We are a small friendly club. This is really good quality training for you and your dog which will make you feel proud to be an owner! Get in contact to start training in our programme.
---------------------------
Our Foundation Course is for all ages. The course runs for 8 weeks and costs £50 payable at the first session. The class is usually for around 8 -10 dogs. There is a pre-booking procedure which ensures each dog is expected and registered for the session. The first class runs from 6.30pm to 7.20pm (Registration on the first evening is at 6.15pm) with the second class following at 7.30pm.

I'm afraid I'm cancelling classes tonight.
I have Covid following my holiday and as Bob's wife is having a major op next week, I wasn't prepared to take any chances.
Next week the venue is used for a polling station so we will return on 11 July.
So sorry for any inconvenience.

Grass seed injuries 🌱
Where do they go? Between the toes, ear canals or under eye lids
For such tiny objects they cause a lot of pain and trouble!
A sign your dog may have a grass seed lodged somewhere, head shaking, holding head to one side, rubbing ear, licking paw, swollen red boil between the toes, sometimes a little hole appears or the foot may swell
Seek Veterinary advice if you have any concerns, grass seeds often need removal under a general anaesthetic

Guidance for those attending classes
This what I was referring to with last night's class
We talk a lot about SAFETY in our work, but what does that really mean?
Does it mean that we shelter our dogs from any experience that is scary or dangerous?
Does it mean that we “cotton wool” their world to protect them from it?
NOPE….
We do differentiate between a dog being safe and a dog feeling safe for sure!!
These are two very different things 😬
🐺 We tailor each animals education based on its social character
👉🏼 This is essential as each social character has a VERY different view on safety
🐺 Through relationship and teaching we support the dogs as they navigate their way around the world
👉🏼 By building the right bond and offering our dogs what they need at any given time we build in a natural ability for them to manage the stresses of life
If you would like to learn about The Hemene Approach, our next course starts next month on the 18th October!
Get in touch by email to find out more!
Please see our latest guidance a copy will be in each new dog's pack.

Covid-19: Related Guidance
(Amended following Lockdown)
Our guidance has been written in conjunction with Government advice and The Kennel Club online information. It is a difficult balancing act to maintain a safe environment and allow some much-needed dog social development. Please be thoughtful and use common sense when attending. PARTICIPATION IS ENTIRELY AT YOUR OWN RISK.
- You are not to attend classes if you have symptoms of Covid-19 or self-isolating - credits will be given. Please phone and give as much notice as possible.
- Any queuing must be done at an appropriate social-distance, in accordance with current Government guidance.
- You must arrive on time for your class and depart promptly - class times will be staggered.
- Masks must be worn on entry but then at your discretion.
- The space allocated for you to attend is for one person plus one other, when needed.
- Yours and your dog’s belongings (toys, treats, retrieve item and mat) are potential carriers of the virus infection, please limit them to a minimum. There will be no shared water, so please bring water and water bowl with you, if required.
- A one-way system will be in operation on entry and exit.
- Hand-sanitizer will be available although bringing your own is good practice.
- Any paperwork will be prepared 72 hours in advance and placed in a plastic folder.
- Consider the use of a long line/ lead if your dog is likely not to return directly to you.
- Contactless payment will be made on arrival.
Dated: 1 September 2021
I'm starting to contact people who have messaged us over Lockdown and the summer holidays.
Unfortunately, my 'Notifications' for this site had been turned off but I'm attempting to catch up in date order.
Please check your mobiles for any messages from me as I need to hear back quickly before moving on to the next on my list.
Many thanks for your patience. Senior Instructor- Ruth
Hi Everyone, after what has been a difficult period for both ourselves and our dogs.
I promised that once Government regulations permitted, we would attempt to restart the club training again. The committee and I have agreed that we should try again soon so, on Thursday 9 SEPTEMBER 2021, we will reopen our club again. Times, as before, are 6.30pm for Foundation class (6.15pm for new dogs), 7.30pm for Bronze, Silver and Gold levels.
Covid-related rules will still apply with mask-wearing on entering the room, hand sanitising and distance sitting plus card payment, where appropriate. This should enable us to maintain a safe environment for us all and allow us to run things as near 'normal' as possible in the circumstances.
Obviously, if you are unwell or test 'positive', please contact me and stay away.
I intend to continue to run the Good Citizen Dog Scheme until December 2021 and in January 2022, move to a simpler club set-up away from the Kennel Club. It will focus primarily on dogs new to obedience-related training and occur once the dog/ owner relationship is established and a good bond exists. We will award successful dogs with our own 'St Austell Bay Dog Training Club' certificates and rossettes. There may be an opportunity to do more advanced work but I will await the outcome from this change.
We plan to have a Christmas party in December, if safe to do so.
Again, thank you for your patience during these difficult times. I will contact those who were undertaking training by the mobile numbers I have on record.
Looking forward to seeing you again. Ruth - Senior Instructor 🐺 🐾 🐾
