There's more than one way to teach & to learn something 🐾

Not all of us need to use the same training methods (as long as they are positive). Dogs, just like people, have their own unique ways of learning. What may be effective for one dog may not work for another, and that's perfectly fine. There are multiple approaches to teaching something.

Whether it's teaching loose lead walking, recall, retrieves, tricks, weaves, contacts, and so on, I frequently recommend different training techniques for different dogs as they are all different and require different approaches.

This applies to what and how we reward our dog 🐾

Different dogs find different things more rewarding than others. Some may enjoy treats, toys, verbal or physical praise, and the way we give them these rewards can also differ. For example, my cocker spaniel, Gloria, gets excited when I scatter some food on the floor for her to search for. On the other hand, Harold, my springer spaniel, would be appalled by such a reward. He prefers it when I toss a treat for him to catch. Gloria is much more driven by food/toy rewards whereas Harold prefers food/verbal praise much more exciting than a tug toy.

So if you feel like something isn't working, don't worry! It's not that they can't, your pup may just need a different approach to learning or a different reward system in place!

Mya’s Journey 🐾

Mya’s mum took on Mya when she was 7 years old and she has settled in brilliantly over the past 18 months.
The only issues they were struggling with, were Mya’s excitement out on walks when encountering other dogs.

Back in February we had a lovely 1-2-1 session, focusing on Mya’s excitement and starting to work on a recall, in the hope that one day she would be able to be off lead.

After lots of hard work Mya and her mum started to see some lovely improvements, and we started discussing if Mya would be ready to join our 6 week Introduction to Gundog training course.
We decided to give it a go for the first week and see how she found a class situation.

Fast forward 6 weeks later and they have successfully completed our Gundog course, learned some fab new skills and completed on & off lead exercises and games around other dogs.

BUT the best bit…

Mya’s mum told me she finally felt confident enough to let her off lead at the beach. Not only did Mya come back every time when recalled, she also chose to check in regularly! 🙌

I was over the moon to hear this and it just goes to show, hard work does pay off.

🐾Embrace the idea of normalizing things going wrong, making mistakes and just accepting that training doesn't always go as we had planned 🐾

Life is full of unexpected moments, and our furry friends are no exception. They too can have their "off" days, just like us.

So, if your training session or walk isn't going as smoothly as you hoped, then that's ok. Our dogs aren't robots! Instead, why not try one of my tips below.

- Simplify the exercise and focus on the basics. Let's set them up for success not failure!

-Shake things up and do something different, work on some fun tricks that you know they'll enjoy!

-Time to have some fun! Play a few games with them, bring out their favourite toys, and engage in activities like tug of war, retrieves, or ball games. Let's do whatever we know they enjoy the most!

- If they're foodies, why not scatter some food around and let them have a little hunt to find them! It'll be a tasty and fun challenge for them.

-Take a break! Just like us, our dogs also need some downtime to relax and recharge. So go ahead, take a well-deserved break, and let your pup enjoy a down day too!

Remember, there's always a new day waiting for us! Sometimes, it's important to pause, reflect, and give it another shot tomorrow.

🐾Make training a part of your everyday routine🐾

Training is not limited to attending classes, having one-on-one sessions, or practicing at home. Training can be incorporated into our daily lives.

There are countless chances for us to practice and reinforce small bits of training!
Such as getting them to sit before their dinner, waiting when doors open/going in and out of a car, recalling them back inside from the garden, and adding in fun games/exercises into your daily walks with them.

When you're taking your dog for a walk next time, why not make it extra enjoyable by playing some fun games or practicing recall? You can also make it super exciting by scattering some food for them to sniff out and find.

Our trust and bond grow stronger with each enjoyable and positive interaction.

Hello there fellow dog lovers!

A little introduction into who I am and what Emily's Pawsitive Pathways is all about!

Dogs have always been a huge part of my life, my childhood was spent competing to a high level in Agility & Obedience, and as I got older I ventured into the world of Gun Dog training.
Previously I have worked at 3 different training clubs across the UK teaching a wide variety of classes. I have also worked at Board & Train facility's.

On top of 10 + years experience I am also qualified in🐕‍🦺

🐾Level 3 Extended Diploma - Animal Management (Ofqual)
🐾Level 3 Canine Behaviour & Training
🐾Undertaking Level 4 Canine Behaviour, welfare and training. ( Ofqual)
🐾First Aid Qualified ( Dog & Human)

As well as completing accredited qualifications I am constantly attending training webinars & seminars from various trainers all top of their fields to keep my knowledge constantly updated.

I am now so excited to be able to introduce Emily's Pawsitive Pathways. The last year has been spent planning and building and I cant wait to become apart of you and your dogs journey.
