Does your horse have a pink nose, pink ears or fair skin? If so, make sure to use a pet safe suncream on these areas to prevent your horse from getting sun burnt. Just like us, horses can easily get sun burnt if they aren't protected, so make sure to apply cream regularly. You may also consider using a UV protected fly mask with ears and a nose cover. If your horse does get burnt and you're at all concerned, don't hesitate to call us.
Could you easily recognise Ragwort? See the two main stages of Ragwort growth below. Make sure to check your fields regularly and always call your vet if you suspect your horse may have ingested Ragwort.
Today is national 'I Love Horses' day! We'd love to see your gorgeous horses, so please share your best pictures in the comments below!
Did you know, a horse has a range of vision that spans up to 350 degrees? They have two blind spots, one directly in front of them, and one directly behind them. Eyes are extremely delicate, so if your horse damages its eye(s) in any way, always call the vet to examine them. Don't try to treat it yourself as you may unintentionally make the situation worse.
Happy International Kissing Day! What gorgeous nose will you be kissing today? Share your pictures with us in the comments!
Here are a few facts about Ragwort and why it is so important to regularly check your fields. If you suspect your horse may have ingested Ragwort, contact your vet straight away.
How often do you pick out your horse's feet? Generally, it is advised your horse's should have their feet picked out twice a day to minimise the risk of injury or infection. In winter, it is even more important to check your horse's feet! With the wet and muddy weather, picking out hooves is a great time to check for mud fever and, dare we say the dreaded word . . . abscesses!
Field management is important all year round to ensure your horses and ponies are safe when turned out. In winter, especially in freezing temperatures, there are a few more checks that should be made. Checking the water troughs to ensure they’re not frozen over is vital. Try placing tennis balls in the trough to keep the water from freezing!
The firework season can be stressful for horses and owners. Don't forget that fireworks can continue up to, and including New Years Eve! Make sure you prepare ahead to reduce stressful situations and, if you need further support with this, please do not hesiate to give us a call on 01637 880307
