Beautiful Nala had her first training session with me this morning, she is the biggest, most gorgeous gentle giant 💖
She is so friendly that she forgets her size and gets too excitable and forgets her recall, so we are going to work getting her to remain calm, listen to instructions and remember her recall when she is out and about 😊🐾
Really looking forward to our first block of sessions together.

This is so true and this is why I will always be loyal and do my very best for every dog that comes my way ❤️🐾❤️

Some sound advice here, I’ve been asked a few times what my views on this situation are, I will write about that in a separate post but for now if you have a or suspect your dog is an XL bulky breed then please do follow these guidelines if you haven’t done so already 🐾

Yesterday I worked with this beautiful boy, Basil and his mum, Basil is a Romanian rescue boy who is extremely anxious in the home and out and about. He’s been through a lot in his 18 months but now he is with his new mum and Dad he’s safe and loved, it’s time to put in some basic training to help him.
Because he is so anxious he was unable to listen and take in commands but by the end of the session Basil was completely smashing the “look at me” and “come” commands and his mum was leading the walk which enabled Basils anxiety to calm... it was beautiful to see how relaxed he was towards the end.
Basil you are a ⭐️🐾

Some more outdoor training sessions this week, this session was to suppprt Ozzie with his recall, we did this using a long line training lead and the “come” command which we had laid the foundations down for already in previous training sessions working on him walking to heel 😊 As always Ozzie did brilliantly as did all four of his humans 🐾🐾
Please do drop me a message if I can help you at all in any area of your dogs training and behaviour. 🐾🐾

A beautiful training session with Lizzie this week, some wonderful non verbal interactions happening, Lizzie is looking to her humans for direction and is now walking beautifully to heel, her anxiety on walks has dialled right back and she is no longer pulling and straining on the lead 😊
We are now working with Lizzie and her reactivity towards other dogs, I had a lovely message from her human this morning to tell me that he and Lizzie had a really positive interaction with another dog ❤️🐾

Well done Lizzie and your humans… great work 🐾🐾

I’ve had some wonderful training sessions this week, any work done outside was done early in the morning before it got too warm.
I’ve also had some wonderful feed back this week too ……

“all of Ozzy's walks have been red lead walks since we saw you with the 'come' training and he's doing so well!”

This was some work we did where Ozzy was pretty reactive and straining on the lead. We used the “Ozzy Come” training technique with great results 🐾🐾

“We’ve made great progress, Rosie lies on her back and allows (removed name for privacy)
to tickle her tummy!!”

This is some ongoing work where the dog Rosie has been anxious and growling around the families toddler, we’ve done lots of calming work and modelling good practice for the toddler around the dog, played games to build the relationship and the results are showing. This has turned a pretty difficult situation where the family were wondering if they would need to rehome the dog completely around 🐾🐾

Results and feedback like this is why I love my job 🐾❤️🐾

If I can help to support you and your dog in anyway either in your home or via an online session please do get in touch 🐾🐾

Please be so careful with your dogs in this heat, if you choose to walk them please do so in the early morning or late evening.
If they are getting warm and showing signs of the heat bothering them cool them down with cold, wet towels on the neck and chest not on their backs…. Dogs loose and gain heat from their paws and underneath their body. Doggy cool mats are good for them to lay on. You could close curtains and blinds to keep your home cooler.
Fill a paddling pool for them but place it in the shade.
Limit their time in the garden when it’s particularly hot and sunny, especially if you don’t have much shade.
Always have water access and it may be a good idea to lay extra water bowls out for them. If you have an elderly, very young dog or brachycephalic breed please take extra care in this sunshine 🐾☀️🐾

Today I had the pleasure of working with the beautiful Lizzie who is reactive on walks, she did so well today and so did her human 🐾❤️
We concentrated on making Lizzie feel safe and secure when out walking, we used a training technique that is teaching Lizzie that her human is in charge and leading the walk not Lizzie so she can just relax and enjoy her time outside 🐾❤️🐾

So over the last four weeks I’ve had the privilege of working with the gorgeous Penny and her family.
Penny is a Romanian rescue from FINAL STOP RESCUE who has only been here a few months, she is such a friendly confident girl but needed to learn a few basic good manners especially with her doggie siblings. Penny has responded so well and quickly to all the training we’ve put in place, her humans have worked hard and they feel the training is definitely paying off. Penny even sleeps with her doggie siblings now which is a big improvement.
Positive reinforcement, repetition and consistency are key to a dogs training but most of all as you know here at Treats and Tails Training Academy our key basis to all our training is Behaviour = behind the behaviour is a Feeling = behind the Feeling is a Need= once the need is met the magic happens and the positive results start showing. Penny’s need was she was struggling to find her place in the pack so was asserting herself as pack leader and trying to put her siblings in their place, once we met her need with training techniques her feelings of insecurity and confusion became less and her behaviour improved. Well done Penny 🐾❤️🐾

Please be extra careful with your dogs in this beautiful weather we are having.
If you can’t walk your dogs when it’s cooler don’t worry, missing a couple of walks isn’t going to harm them but over heating could.
If you wouldn’t walk bare foot on the path because it’s too hot don’t ask your dog too.
Make sure they have access to cold water at all times.
Don’t worry if they go off their food, we do in the heat too… drinking is the most important thing.
Offer them a shaded area in your garden if they like being outside.
Some dogs love a paddling pool 😊
Offer cold towels or cool mats to lie on to cool their paws and tummy.

I had the privilege of working with the gorgeous Ozzy this week and he and his humans did brilliantly, by the end of our first session Ozzy was definitely understanding our training cues and what we were asking of him. We needed to change Ozzys mind set from protector and decision maker to relaxed dog because he knows his humans can make those decisions he was struggling with.
I’m really looking forward to the next few weeks of work with Ozzy 🐾
Please do contact me if you need support with your four legged friends 🐾❤️🐾

Why do we use Positive reinforcement training here at Treats and Tails Training Academy?
Lots of reasons but three of the main…..

🐾 Because Dogs ultimately want to please their humans, positive reinforcement and treat based training is one of the quickest and most effectives ways to achieve a well behaved dog

🐾 Because it helps the dog develop their self confidence by using encouragement , consistent positivity and reward based strategies.

🐾 Because positive reinforcement develops a relationship of trust between dog and carer

🐾 Because it helps develop a dogs self control which in turn will eliminate unwanted behaviours and training will become easier and more enjoyable for both dog and human 😊

If you are looking for some training strategies or if your dog has a behaviour you are struggling to crack please do get in touch, we would love to help 🐾❤️🐾

Today we’ve had a couple of sessions with two beautiful doggos… focusing on two different behaviours, the first was unwanted excessive barking with various triggers and the second was basic good manners in the home.
The underpinning to all my dog training is looking at the behaviour the dog is displaying, trying to understand the feelings behind it and then ultimately focusing on the need that dog is hiding behind that behaviour. When we focus on the need rather than the behaviour that’s when the magic happens 🐾❤️🐾
