The takeaway from this afternoon's webinar with a dog law solicitor is.....

Basically, the government are not going to mess about with this, it could all come in to play as early as the end of October. As it has not yet been announced how the law is going to define an American Bully XL since it is not a recognised breed in its own right, it is a crossbreed made up of various breeds, it is advised that if you or anyone you know owns a large bull breed you/they could be affected so action needs to be taken now to prepare.

The restrictions are almost definitely going to be the same as for exempted pitbull types:-

🐾 spayed/neutered

🐾 muzzled and on lead in all public places, including the front garden and the car

🐾 microchipped with up to date details and id tag

🐾 3rd party liability insurance. Currently the only company that provides this is The Dogs Trust when you become a member for £25 per year the insurance is included which covers up to 10 dogs in your household, however, if your dog then becomes a prohibited breed, you will need to take out a separate policy for that specific dog and it must remain in place for the entirety of the dog's life

🐾 Once the ban comes in to force, the dog can only be registered to ONE person for the whole of it's life. It will be illegal to gift, sell, abandon or rehome the dog. You will not be allowed to transfer keepership

As the law stands at the moment with prohibited breed 'types', it is all about how the dog looks and whether it shares a substantial number of characteristics with the banned breed as to whether it will come under 'type' so even when the 'standard' is announced, don't fall in to the trap of thinking 'it doesn't affect my dog because he's an American bulldog" or a Cane Corso or whatever. If you are in any doubt whatsoever as to whether your dog may be 'typed' get it registered anyway, it's far better than the alternative!

I will update as more information becomes available but for now, I will be doing all I can to keep my Reggie safe and on the right side of the law 💙

The Prime Minister has announced the XL Bully is to be added to the list of banned breeds in the UK.

As we do not yet know how an XL Bully type will be defined in law, owners of all large bull breeds are understandably concerned as to what this will mean for their dogs. We therefore need to act NOW to give us the best chance possible. Here are a few steps you should put in place immediately.

🐾 Make sure your dog's microchip details are accurate and up to date and they are wearing a collar and ID tag

🐾 Get your dog spayed/neutered ASAP (or at the very least have them booked in with a vet for a later date if still young)

🐾 Start positive muzzle training TODAY (Chirag Patel has a great video on YouTube)

🐾 Get on top of their general obedience and lead training

🐾 Keep your dog on lead and under control at all times when out in public, including your front garden

🐾 When out walking, use a double ended lead clipped to both collar and harness for extra security

🐾 Check, double check and check again all gates and fences in your garden and put a barrier across the inside of your front door if possible to eliminate any chances of escape

🐾 Take out 3rd party public liability insurance, you can become a Dog's Trust member for £25 per year which includes 3rd party insurance

I cannot stress enough how important all of this is if you are to stand any chance at all of being allowed to keep your dog.

🐾 Meet the face behind FurPlay 🐾

My name is Lizz, my journey with dogs began many many years ago, in fact I cannot remember a time when I wasn't seeking out dogs! My Mum often talks about how I would lean out of my pram, arms outstretched, shouting "GOGGY!!!" 🤣. Then, as a young child my parents were forever sending out search parties for me where I would always eventually be found in someone's garden playing with rabbits, or walking some random stranger's dog (as was the norm in the 1970s), sometimes I would even disappear to a nearby farm to talk to the horses and go home hours later, often riddled with fleas! 🙈🤣.

Fast forward to September 2014, following a lifetime so far of owning, caring for, walking and training my own dogs and those of family and friends, I took the decision to create FurPlay as there was becoming an increasing demand for 'professional' dog walkers. I began with just a couple of clients of my own alongside my 'proper' job in retail when the opportunity arose to take over the clients from my friend, Sarah, who ran Dogdayz, an already well established and trusted business, in March 2015.

In 2020, I took full advantage of the enforced free time and began studying the theory of all things dog, starting with a diploma in Dog Training, following on with Responsible Dog Ownership, UK Dog Law and Canine Body Language among many other dog related courses. I am currently studying for a diploma in Advanced Canine Behaviour which I aim to complete early to mid 2024.

At home I share my life with Reggie, a 4 year old Bullmastiff/American Bulldog cross and Luci a (roughly) 11 year old former Romanian street dog of questionable lineage. My business is so much more than a job, it's a way of life and I strive to reflect this in the care each and every dog receives. I like to think of myself as your dog's best friend 😁.

Do not take for a walk!

If you have no choice but to take your dog for a walk, DO NOT let them off the lead.

Keep dogs on the lead in the garden, a sudden bang can spook even the most chilled of dogs and cause them to flee
