Crusty Cat Rescue and Sanctuary - CCRS

Crusty Cat Rescue and Sanctuary - CCRS A place that rescues, looks after, & re-homes unwanted, abandoned, & abused cats around the local area. Completely voluntary & donations funded

Crusty Cat Rescue / Sanctuary was founded in St Helens in 2017. Since then we have rescued numerous cats in distress, whether through our rescue or through the online network of other volunteers. If we take a cat in we ALWAYS: de-flea & de-worm them, neuter them (if they are not already), get them any necessary vet treatment, & make sure they get back to health so they can go about their catty liv

es. Some are even on monthly veterinary plans to make sure they get the proper help. The cats have the freedom of our sanctuary once they are back to good health allowing them to come and go as they please & enjoy the life a domestic cat deserves. We run completely off donations, whether monetary or supplies such as food & litter, so any help is greatly appreciated. Please DM us for a list of needed supplies. Thank you for reading

We are heartbroken to announce that JACKO (AKA Big Lad/Giant Kitten) passed away late last night 😞 He'd never been the same since his bout of idiopathic vestibular disease, however he stopped eating and drinking and slipped away peacefully in his favourite comfy bed surrounded by loved ones ❤️

Jacko was a Bombay breed meaning he was absolutely HUGE! He was only a young lad when we got him as his elderly owner passed away, but it didn't take him long to settle. He had MORE FRIENDS ON OUR STREET THAN WE DID: walking from one end to the other to collect his UMPTEEN daily dinners, get loads of FUSS FROM STRANGERS at the corner shop, or just to SHOW EVERYONE it was HIS STREET. Even the CHIPPY OWNERS KNEW WHO HE WAS and would sort him some fish out! 😂

He was also very fearless: we witnessed A FULLY GROWN GERMAN SHEPHERD RUN-OFF in panicked submission from him, and he even STOLE HAM DIRECTLY OUT OF ANOTHER DOG'S MOUTH 😂 He liked to sit on the street corner, giving the air of a mafia don gladly accepting fuss from passers by.

But back at the sanctuary he was a great big softie, PURRING LIKE A DIESEL ENGINE and constantly BLEPPING ❤️ One of his favourite pastimes was climbing into cardboard boxes to have a fight with himself, but due to his size it always sounded like we had the builders in 😂

It's always sad to say goodbye, but it's comforting to know he was happy here and made so many friends on the street. GOODBYE, BIG LAD, enjoy bossing the Big Street in the Sky ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

WEEKLY CAT PROFILE

Meet Clint. He arrived at our sanctuary along with Maude and also originally had a different name... BATMAN! When you see him sat atop a wall, swooshing his tail, his eyes fixed in a stare: you understand why he got that name 😆

Some have even said he's a "proper witch's cat", but we don't like this as the centuries old stigma about black cats being evil and sinister affects adoption rates from rescues EVEN TODAY, according to psychologists 😳😞

When he first came here we had a lot of TROUBLE GETTING HIM TO SETTLE: every time he even saw another cat he would make a noise similar to the opening bar of 'The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly' theme... so the name Clint was adopted 😂

Well, after finding him a spot to call his own in one of the bedrooms, Clint has settled and generally just wants to mind his own business around the sanctuary. He even has his own personal feeding spot that NO-ONE ELSE CAN EVEN THINK ABOUT USING! He is also very outdoorsy and takes sentry duty of the local area VERY SERIOUSLY 😉

WEEKLY CAT PROFILE

This one here is called Maude. Apparently named 'Tinkerbell' when we rescued her, we wonder whether this name was ironic due to her temperament 😂 So, as she's an older cat, we thought Maude suited her much better 😉

Although classed as a calico: Maude has a WONDERFUL combination of tuxedo markings with a blue & ginger tabby-like coat ❤️

She is a qualified box tester and takes these duties VERY SERIOUSLY... most of her days are spent sleeping in boxes, drawers, nooks & crannies, or any space she can get into 😊 She also likes to GUARD OPEN WINDOWS by sitting on the ledge telling every cat trying to get past to "Do one!" 😂

However, she loves her humans and takes on a nurse cat role should anyone need it, and particularly loves snuggling up too ❤️

WEEKLY CAT PROFILE

This sassy beauty is called Holly. The third of our long-haired cats to feature on the weekly profile, she LOVES the outdoors when it's raining just like Biggies & Mini! 🤔😂

Holly arrived at our sanctuary ALREADY PREGNANT meaning we had to initially wait to get her neutered. However, sadly none of the litter survived infancy 😢

She'd also been treated pretty roughly by the young kids of the previous owners making her VERY JUMPY, SKITTISH and DEFENSIVE when she first arrived. Pets SUFFER FROM STRESS and its associated illnesses too so it can be A LOT OF WORK to help a cat adjust to a household with children.

Happily, Holly seems much calmer and perfectly settled here at CCRS, though we suspect she lives at ALL THE HOUSES in our area 😂 A strong, independent, outdoorsy type: she's never happier when off patrolling her territory, her bushy tail standing straight up like a furry periscope 😂

We OBVIOUSLY LOVE cats... however it has its dangers... 😂🤣

WEEKLY CAT PROFILE

This one is called Edie (Edith) AKA The Baby/The Kid as she's the youngest at CCRS. We've had Edie at CCRS since she was only a few weeks old as her owner sadly died of COVID in 2021 🙁

The eagle-eyed amongst you will have noticed her STRIKING RESEMBLANCE TO OUR LOGO! This is due to the logo being based on an incident where Edie decided to CLIMB A WALL HANGING at the shelter, without considering how to get down 😂

Edie had a very confusing upbringing: as all the other females had been neutered when she arrived they were quite hostile towards her, so she ended up being RAISED BY THE BOYS including HER DAD Sullivan (RIP) who we also took in at the same time as her. This means she's learned boy behaviour, like SPRAYING 😳, CHASING LOCAL TOMS OFF with the rest of the lads... and even MOUNTING boy and girl cats alike! 😳😂

A real lover of the outdoors: she bosses most of the cats here at CCRS and can be a cheeky little madam 😉 However her signature trill every time she walks past or goes in and out of the sanctuary melts our hearts ❤️❤️❤️❤️

HELLO AND UPDATE: Sorry we haven't been online much lately as CCRS has had a lot going on...

FIRSTLY, CAT NEWS: BUSTER had to go in for an operation to remove a rotten tooth. The operation was a complete success and he has been back on the JWB biscuits with a vengeance 😁

DYLAN has also had to have steroid treatment for a skin allergy due to his severe reaction to flea bites. This is despite us de-fleaing him every month. Again, we're glad to report his fur is coming back so it looks like he isn't being driven mad by the itching any more 😊

As we reported in January JACKO suffered a bout of idiopathic vestibular disease, giving him a permanent head tilt and issues with his balance. Although still eating and using litter trays he spent most of his time curled up in bed. However, 'Our Big Lad' has started to charge around the sanctuary again despite his mobility issues, and has even started to assert his dominance by rubbing his face over EVERYTHING and rolling on his back to scent the floor! Loving seeing his resilience 🥳🥳

OTHER NEWS: We will be launching an ONLINE SHOP selling cat toys and prints in order to raise extra funds for our cats here at CCRS. Products are in place, just the store needs some finishing touches before going completely live. WATCH THIS SPACE...

Back to WEEKLY CAT PROFILE next week. Wishing everyone a happy Spring and a lovely day 😎

WEEKLY CAT PROFILE

The second of our long-haired cats to be featured is MINI FLOOF. Called Mini due to her dinky size, she was actually born at the sanctuary through us adopting her mother.

Like all our long-haired cats for some reason, Mini LOVES THE OUTDOORS whatever the weather and cuts a forlorn figure at the window when not permitted to go out during awful weather 😂

Mini is afflicted, like many cats, with a severe ALLERGY TO FLEA BITES causing the skin to become really inflamed and broken. However, after trying different flea treatments & regular grooming of her coat, we were thankfully able to get it back under control 🙏

Unlike Biggie Floofs, Mini loves a good brush and her skin and fur are in FABULOUS condition despite all her outdoorsy adventures and allergy 😊 And though a generally quiet & well-behaved cat, once you start fussing her she won't let you do ANYTHING ELSE for the rest of the day 😂

WEEKLY CAT PROFILE

This is Gracie, better known around CCRS as Biggie Floofs 😄 Biggies' distinctive look is due to being A PURE-BRED PERSIAN ❤️ Pure-breds are highly sought after by breeders and Biggies was no different.

Like all long-haired cats, DREADLOCKS FORM REGULARLY AND NEED SORTING so they don't pinch and inflame the skin. Biggies isn't too chuffed when this needs to be done... but it does need to be done.

She was RESCUED FROM BEING A BREEDING MACHINE by a kind volunteer and was brought to us here at CCRS. Obviously we got her neutered as soon as we could so she could enjoy life as a cat rather than being bred for profit... and boy DOES SHE MAKE THE MOST OF IT NOW!

She loves playing in the dirt, rummaging in junk, going through puddles, and exploring. So no matter how much we brush and groom her she always ends up coming back looking like a bus station drunk 😂 However we don't mind as her fur, and health generally, have improved vastly since being neutered and allowed to enjoy the outdoors ❤️

WEEKLY CAT PROFILE

Join us in wishing a HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Uncle Val! Val is a rarity at CCRS as he was actually born at the sanctuary. He was initially thought to be female so was christened Valerie, but this was shortened to Val when it became clear he was a male 😳😂

When Val was born his mother was incapable of looking after him, so he was adopted into the litter of another cat we'd rescued called Bonnie (RIP). Bonnie was a super mum and gave Val the chance he needed to survive kittenhood 🥰

With an absolutely GORGEOUS tabby coat: Val was re-homed as a kitten but returned to the sanctuary when a landlord threatened his owner with eviction. We were more than happy to have him back as he's such a good-natured and well-behaved cat.

He earned the moniker UNCLE VAL when the litter containing Tilly, Dylan & Buster arrived at CCRS. While some of the cats took umbrage at their arrival Val hung out with & stuck up for them HELPING THEM TO INTEGRATE into our clowder. He also formed a bond with Xen when she arrived all timid and frightened helping her to integrate as well. What a dude 😊

So MANY HAPPY RETURNS, VAL! We all love you here at CCRS ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

WEEKLY CAT PROFILE

This is Buster. He's the brother of Dylan and Tilly (already featured) and arrived at CCRS as part of a rejected litter of five, making him and the litter all very small.

The smallest of the litter (he's only 2.4kg despite being fully grown), this doesn't stop him being a larger than life character in the sanctuary 😊 He loves to travel about the sanctuary on the shoulders of his human underlings 😂 And we just LURVE the markings on his face from the little flashes of white... so cute 🥰

Unfortunately, Buster has been diagnosed with the same problem his brother Dylan had with his teeth, meaning Buster will need all except his fangs removing ☹️ Sadly, this is quite common in rejected litters. We will be doing a fundraiser for him so look out for that.

Despite his own issues Buster is actually a nurse cat: comforting other cats (and people) if they're under the weather - all this despite his disadvantaged start in life 🥰 Though he does have his own trouble-making moments when he wants to 😉

The Middleton Hunt had their final meet yesterday.

A small gathering was observed, not as expected for a closing meet. Then again, we hear the new huntsman Jason O'Donnel isn't very well liked, so no surprises there.

They were observed Leaving the kennels late, setting off at 12pm to rampage around the local area, terriermen in tow. Unbeknown to the hunt, there were some very sneaky sabs from East Yorkshire Coast Hunt Sabs watching their every move.

Thinking they had free reign, hounds were observed going into cry after a fox that was seen fleeing across fields from the hunt. Due to the apparent pace of the hounds, we can’t be certain of the fate of this poor fox.

Now the foxhunting season is over, some wildlife will have at least a small respite from these red faced, entitled t***s.

Until next time you fox nonces!

Hahahaha 😆 😂 😆 can we have some cat weather pls ??
