Last saddle fit before Christmas… although I don’t think it counts as work when you get to have your little helper come along, lunch is involved and you get to ride the gorgeous gentle giant baby. The lovely Woody is 4 and standing at around 18HH… yes I needed a stool!
Fab day to end the year! Merry Christmas everyone 🎄🎅🏼🎁

Finishing up a little repair tonight and then got to revitalising the sheepskin! No re-flocking happening tonight (although I am enjoying a glass of wine after a long week!). Instead last night was re-flock night and a good example of why I keep wittering on about getting your saddles re-flocked!Look at how this flock has balled up and no that’s not the nice bedded in layer underneath it’s a piece of felt put in the panel when it was first made....#sarumsaddlery #saddlefitter #saddler #saddlefitting #qualifiedsaddler #qualifiedsaddlefitter #saddlestitched #qualifiedsaddler #bridle #bridlefitter #handmade #handmadesaddlery #handmadebridle #handstitched #leather #leatherwork #leatherworker #leathercraft
What goes into completing repairs? Part 2 - Repairs: Handle Replacement on case. There’s a lot that goes into repairs - take a look at the first part of this repair, I couldn’t do it all in one video even with just using snippets it would have gone on for too long! Next up, folding the leather, gluing, cleaning… LOTS OF CLEANING and conditioning. I always like to take the time to give items I have in for repair a really good clean and condition before returning to the customer. Finally fixing the new handle in place, in preparation for stitching 🪡🧵. Got any questions? Want to know more? There’s a lot that goes into repairs - take a look at the first part of this repair, I couldn’t do it all in one video even with just using snippets it would have gone on for too long! To start, it’s about prepping taking a good look at the issue, then removing the section and being able to use it as a template. Cutting a strip of leather to the correct thickness, cutting to length, edging, staining, creasing, stitch marking and thinning the leather! Got any questions? Want to know more? Last nights saddle has now been re-flocked and ready to be returned to its owner for final fit with their fitter.
Just look at how good this lovely Jacobs wool is from @benridgewoolworksgb 🥰 it really is as soft and springy as it looks!

When you tidy up your work bench and put your tools at the back then remember your 37 weeks pregnant and can’t really reach the back of the bench anymore… 🤦🏼♀️🤣

As with everyone, this year has absolutely flown by and after looking back on 2023 as a whole I can’t quite believe how much I have done.
From taking the very scary steps to launch Sarum Saddlery in January to now not feeling like a complete imposter in the world of bespoke made to measure, repairs and fitting.
None of it would have been at all possible without each and every person who has supported me over the last 12 month, whether it has been from liking or sharing a post, ordering from me, getting in touch for repairs, having me out onsite to fit and measure or just being an ear at the end of phone when I’ve needed the encouragement. I don’t think I could thank you all enough ♥️
2024 is set to be just as exciting and challenging, I hope you all have a wonderfully Happy New Year and I look forward to navigating the next 12 months alongside you all! 🎊🎆🎉

There are a few occasions where owning a sewing machine or having access to one would definitely speed things up, reins being one of them… especially looking at these half rubber lined reins!
But look how lovely these reins are looking! All prepped and ready to stitch 🪡🧵

What do you mean…?
Full Re-Flock - the final part!
The panel is re-flocked but now it’s time to reattach the panel to the tree!
🔸As with the panel, symmetry is important when putting the saddle back together. If the saddle is put back together unevenly, this can have a negative impact on the horse and the rider.
🔹First the front is stitched back in and then a seat awl is used to line up the centre and hold the rear of the panel in place.
🔸When lacing the back we leave these stitches long and work from one side of the saddle to the other before going back and using a bone to pull these stitches tight and making sure it is secure!
🔹Finally, it’s about finishing off and this part is all about feel and visual inspection 🙌🏼👁️
🔸Assessing the panels constantly by running our hands over the panels feeling for any dips or inconsistencies between each side, aiming for a lovely even feel and look between each side. Any inconsistencies will be felt by the horse and rider.
⭐️Post re-flock your saddler/fitter should return the saddle and make any final adjustments on-site to make sure it’s perfect for your horse and you! ⭐️

What do you mean…?
Full Re-Flock - part 2
Once all the flock is removed, we then have to start putting flock back in!
🔸The panel, if unstitched is stitched back up and then methodically and carefully flocking is teased out into long strands and then put back into the panel working back and forth to ensure a nice even fill.
🔹Symmetry is key, we ideally want an equal amount of flock in each side but at this stage we do not want to overfill the panel otherwise it makes lacing the saddle harder and more challenging!
⭐️Up next… lacing in and finishing off 🪡🧵⭐️
