Medications are not bad!

NSAIDs are frequently used to manage your dog's condition and can offer a dramatic improvement in mobility and quality of life.

There are many licensed drugs available that come in different formulations and are given in different ways. Generally they are very well tolerated.

Why is this important, and why I am talking about it?

I have mentioned this before, but pain has a huge impact on our dog’s behaviour and quality of life. BUT pain is so often underdiagnosed.

Our dogs are, by nature, very stoic animals, so by the time they are showing obvious signs of discomfort (limping, posture changes, aggression), they will be in significant amounts of pain.

There are often many, much more subtle signs that your dog may be experiencing discomfort long before they show some of the obvious signs of pain, and these include; loss of appetite, reluctance to climb the stairs/jump into the car/walk onto slippery floor, licking uncommon areas of their body such as joints, becoming more sensitive to loud or unexpected noises, increased panting, restlessness, sitting or lying asymmetrically, or even just slowing down on walks and choosing to sniff more.

IF you notice your dog showing any of these signs, please take them to the vet for a checkup, and don’t wait until they are limping!

*** MANAGING DOGS WITH HEATSTROKE - SOME FAKE NEWS AND SOME REAL NEWS ***

Posts like the one below with this image are being widely shared! This is very poor information. Heatstroke in ANY species is a MEDICAL EMERGENCY and requires URGENT action to reduce body temperature!

THE APPROPRIATE TREATMENT FOR HEATSTROKE IN DOGS IS IMMERSION IN WATER at 10-16Β°C (50-61Β°F) OR CONTINOUS APPLICATION OF WATER ALL OVER FROM A HOSE OR BUCKETS OR BOTTLES! Dogs will tolerate cooler water if not being immersed in it (eg cold drinks or water from a fridge at 5Β°C.

A dog that has HEATSTROKE and which is UNRESPONSIVE is 37x more likely to DIE! YOU NEED TO COOL THEM TO GIVE THEM A CHANCE OF SURVIVING!

"Lots of myths get shared about cooling hot dogs"

The following information is from Emily Hall's clinical abstract presentation for the British Small Animal Veterinary Association’s annual Congress 2021, link below.

β€’ Rapid Cooling Saves Lives!
β€’ Don't be afraid to use Cold/Ice Water..... it is effective!
β€’ The sooner we can cool these patients, get their temperature below that critical threshold, the less damage is being done and the better the outcome is likely to be
β€’ Use Water, Air, Immersive Cooling, Evaporative Cooling..... use whatever you have available
β€’ Dogs are waiting to be cooled because people are worried about the temperature of the water
β€’ We need to dispel cooling myths that are harming patients

Your dog is great at coping with pain. So by the time you notice they are showing signs of discomfort, the problem is not new.

NSAIDs get a bad rap, but they can be very affective in treating chronic pain.

A consistent multimodal protocol has been shown again and again to be the best (and most effective) approach to treating OA.

Your dog will thank you for it, and you will give

PLEASE NOTE Medications should only be administered following advice from your vet

- arthritis is a progressive disease so overtime your management plan will need to change. Don't fall into the trap of thinking that a treatment isn't working so you stop it - in fact your dog is more likely to need their current treatment plus something else!

A wonderful article by the BBC sharing the benefits of Hydrotherapy for Winnie

Hydrotherapy has major benefits for dogs and cats with muscle and joint conditions.

A puppy with deformed legs is now a top sniffer dog thanks to special treatment in a swimming pool.

Some good advice from Dr Sophie Bell

We need to look after those precious joints. It’s important as arthritic pain can be aggravated by this cold weather.

Keep weight at an optimum, increase omega 3 in the diet, plenty of antioxidants (blueberries or Goji berries), a gentle warm up before a more brisk walk, perhaps add in some hydrotherapy, physio, and massage.

COUNTDOWN TO CHRISTMAS!!!

Its so close! For the next 7 days, enjoy an each day to help you on your arthritis journey

Joint supplements may be beneficial for your dog but can take weeks to take effect. If you think your dog is struggling with arthritis don't start them on a supplement alone as it could mean they are living with pain for weeks before the treatment gets to work!

Saddened to hear of the passing of Her Majesty the Queen.

An animal lover and true countrywoman, she dedicated her life to the service of our country, with dignity and grace, now reunited with her beloved Prince Philip.

Our deepest sympathy is with the Royal Family.

Rest in peace HM Queen Elizabeth II. God bless you.

Vital information if you see a dog suffering from heat stroke

Vital information if you see a dog suffering from heat stroke

β€œHEATSTROKE IS A MEDICAL EMERGENCY”

I’m compelled to keep posting this. I’ve learned of a number of dogs that have died of heatstroke in the recent heatwave.

If you see a horse or person or dog with heatstroke, then cool them down by hosing/spraying water from the outside or house water supply (usually 10-20Β°C). It doesn't have to be ice-cold to be effective as long as you put a lot on. You may well save a life!

And yes, I know there is a lot of advice about cooling horses, dogs and people which goes against aggressive cooling and advises ice packs in the groin or armpit and using tepid water! It's outdated and ineffective and if you follow it your horse/dog/person is more likely to suffer permanent injury or worse!

If you don't believe me, then listen to the people who do this for a living with people...

"Active cooling via Cold Water Immersion (CWI) is now the standard of care and should be done immediately. This is a Grade IA recommendation.5 The patient should be immersed in ice water 1 to 3Β°C." http://www.emdocs.net/heat-related-illness-how-to-cool-em-and-what-to-do-after/

The best way to offer your dog a pain-free life for as long as possible, is to use several different treatment options together. It is unlikely that one option on its own will be enough.
