Just to remind everyone who is tempted to start clearing their gardens ready for Spring. Please be aware of hedgehogs in winter hibernation, under hedgerows, borders and untidy corners, which look tempting to start clearing. Check as much as you can first, before accidently unearthing a prickly friend. We have just taken our third call in relation to a hedgehog being discovered.
This also applies to Councils assigned to clearing verges with an array of damaging tools. Always be mindful and careful of disturbing wild animals in their habitats, especially hedgehogs.
Although there are no set rules as to when individuals will wake up, this is usually determined by outside temperatures. We are due to experience a chilly spell in March, so it may well be after that they will start to emerge. Get ready to start support feeding, as some of the hedgehogs who went to sleep might wake up a bit weak and wobbly and will need help to get their weight back up, also because their natural food source may not be readily available. We have had reports from hedgehog saviours of their hedgehogs who were visiting for food even when the night time temperatures were -7, so not all hedgehogs hibernate, it is all down to individuals.
