It’s firework season
SHARE 🫶 If you’re planning fireworks over the next few weeks or months, please work with us, let your local community know so we can be prepared.
Firework season for folk with pets is dreaded, being unpredictably let off from October to January.
If you have an animal that doesn’t cope with loud noises, or a new dog or young pup who is yet to experience fireworks we have tips you can do yourself to help settle them + product options to suit all animals that can aid with keeping them calm - pop by for a chat.
Things to help…
Early dog walks, before 6pm ✔️
Feed them early too, some might not eat once the noise starts ✔️
Use things to distract them, KONGS, Lickimats, treat dispensers, puzzles & natural chews to keep them busy ✔️
Make them a safe covered den area, with all their favourite toys, chews, comfort things like a blanket or clothing that has your scent for them ✔️
Simple things like shutting the curtains, windows & window vents, turn the tv or music volume up, stick a load in your washing machine or tumble dryer, turn on fans - these can all help dampen some sounds & sights ✔️
Let them choose where they are most comfortable, & try to be as normal as you can be, being there to comfort & talk calmly to them will help.
Keep your cats (& other outdoor animals) in, entertain with toys to distract, you can also use Lickimats & KONGS with cats too, moosh food on or in them ✔️
For dog toilet trips to garden, pop a lead on - a firework going off could cause your dog to suddenly bolt & jump the fence ✔️
Check fences & gates daily to avoid any escapes in general ✔️
Fireworks can cause distress to others too…children, elderly, veterans, PTSD/trauma sufferers, neurodiverse children & adults + farm animals, wild birds & other wildlife have no where to go 😔
Lastly if you plan to have a bonfire, please don’t build them days/weeks in advance, these are perfect habitat & hideaways for wildlife.
