To all our followers and supporters here at Ella’s farm.
I have taken the difficult decision to close Ella’s
Farm.
Over the past year the demand for rescue spaces for rabbits has sky-rocketed. Unfortunately, the cost of all vet care including vaccination and neutering has also increased significantly. Paired with fewer people coming forward to provide homes and my limited time to devote to fundraising this means I have been funding all care out of my own pocket. I am no longer able to do this.
I am also returning to my other job in the autumn so will have less time to devote to rehabilitation.

I will continue to care for the bunnies that we have here and will have a few rabbits for rehoming when I can raise the funds to neuter them.

I’d like to thank you all for your kindness and support over the past few years, in particular to all those that have fostered for us and those that have rehomed and donated. I wouldn’t have been able to do any of it without you.

Best wishes to you all

Look at this little one! Summer was adopted from Ella’s farm to form a trio. She is very much in love with her two new best friends and is healthy and very happy. Summer was born here at Ella’s farm when her pregnant mum was brought in from a neglect situation. So it’s lovely to see her thriving!!
Please get in touch if you are interested in adopting a bunny

NOW NEUTERED AND WILL BE READY FOR A NEW HOME ONCE FULLY RECOVERED
Daphne and Celeste! A pair of netherland dwarf girls. Vaccinated and bonded. Booked for spay next week. These will be rehomed as a pair. They are currently living with my fab foster carers who have worked really hard at socialising these two as they were very very timid when they first arrived. They are doing much better now and will be available for rehoming when they have recovered from their op. Message for more information

Debby and Acorn. Mum and Daughter, grey and white dwarf rabbit X. Came in to Ella’s farm via Bunny Angels.
These girls are sweet but shy. They are very inquisitive so it won’t take them long to settle into their new family. Both vaccinated and awaiting spay when Acorn is big enough.

Hi Everyone!! Sorry I’ve been quiet for a bit. I’ve been failing to work Facebook properly 🤦🏻‍♀️. Figured it out now, tho, so thought I’d come on and post an update.
We’ve been busy! The demand for rescue spaces for bunnies is at an all time high and we are approached several times a week asking us to take in more rabbits.
I have two pairs who will soon be ready for their new homes. A mum and daughter pairing and a pair of mini lop brothers. Keep an eye out for updates as to when they will be ready.

Check out these two girls living their best life in their new home. Thoroughly loved and spoiled by their new family 🥰

CALL OUT FOR FOSTER CARERS!!!
I have 9 rabbits due in next week 😳.

7 of these are 8 week old babies from one litter. I will get them vaccinated as soon as possible and will separate them into same-sex pairs but I could do with knowledgeable foster homes until they are old enough to be neutered. I do have enough housing here but they would really benefit from some focused attention from a foster family to get them ready for their lives as pet bunnies.

If you are interested in caring for a pair of baby bunnies for 2 to 4 months please get in touch

NOW REHOMED
Little Socks! Now ready to be reserved. Castrated and vaccinated. Socks was born here at Ella’s farm, when his pregnant mum was brought to the rescue. So we know all about him. He is a medium sized rabbit with a lovely healthy coat. Although he is fluffy he is relatively low maintenance from a coat point of view. He would really benefit from having a neutered companion. Please get in touch if you would be interested in giving Socks a home

Tomorrow is going to be a sad day for me here at Ella’s farm. I’m sorry I haven’t posted about Suzie recently - it’s been a little too painful. But I thought I would today, only to highlight the wonderful charity that is the British Thoroughbred Retraining centre (BTRC).

I had the privilege of being able to care for, to get to know and to earn the trust and love of this delightful little horse. Sadly, simply put, Suzie just couldn’t cope with life as a horse. She was, every few weeks, very disturbed to the point that her behaviour was dangerous. She was seen by 4 different vets who could only help temporarily.
It came to a head back in august of this year and I took the sad decision to hand her over to the expert team at the BTRC.

They discovered that, underlying her unpredictable behaviour, she has a painful chronic eye condition. This causes significant pain in bright light and limits her vision. It is never going to go away. Normally, this only affects one eye which means that vets will remove the affected eye and the horse learns to cope with the remaining healthy eye. Poor Suzie has it in both eyes. The BTRC have tried hard to treat it but she is still dangerously unpredictable because she just can’t see. They have taken the awful but brave decision to put her to sleep tomorrow.

Suzie really doesn’t deserve any of it and I am heart broken that I couldn’t take the pain away.

Please, to all you wonderful animal lovers, please look up the BTRC and learn about what they do and why. These beautiful, majestic and awe-inspiring animals give their all at a young age only to be discarded when they no longer fit the bill. The BTRC ensures the welfare and future of a small number of racehorses and they do a fabulous job.

Think of my Suzie tomorrow. And hug your fur-babies that little bit tighter for me and tell them how grateful you are that they put their lives in your hands 🥲

I had to say goodbye to this little darling today. Chewy never really got any respite from her chronic respiratory condition. Despite this, she was a little fighter and defied the odds for 9 months whilst under our care. Over the past few months, despite repeated courses of antibiotics, her breathing slowly deteriorated and her weight started to fall. For her last few weeks she really enjoyed being paired with another pasteurella bunny and repeatedly surprised me by gleefully hurtling around her outdoor enclosure.
Sadly, with the recent wet weather and subsequent warm days, the flies came out in force and they took advantage of her frailty. Thankfully her fly-strike was spotted early so she didn’t suffer. However she was too frail to cope with the rigorous treatment required. She was gently put to sleep this afternoon, whilst in my arms.
Binky free over the rainbow bridge, little love 🥲

NOW REHOMED
Charles! Small Agouti Lionhead cross
Still looking for his forever home.
Castrated and vaccinated. He came into us from a hoarding situation and was estimated to be about 6 weeks old at the time so we have taken time to allow him to grow before neutering him. He is a timid chap and would really benefit from being in a pet home with a neutered bunny as a companion. Please get in touch if you would be interested in adoption him

NOW RESERVED
These two cuties are ready for a new home! Both were born here at the rescue back in January, when we had 5 neglected pregnant females brought in.
Sweep is a male black lionhead, and Winter is female brown lionhead. I think they have the same Dad so they are half siblings.
Sweep and Winter are fully vaccinated and neutered. They have been getting on very well so will go to a new home as a bonded pair.
They will need someone who is prepared to groom them regularly as they have a tendency to get a little matted.
Please message me if you are interested in adopting this cute pair.

REHOMED

These two little girls are looking for their forever home. 2-3yrs of age. Vaccinated, neutered and bonded. Fit and healthy and full of beans.

Honey and Skye will make a lovely pair of pets for someone. They need to gain confidence with handling but this will come with some patience and focussed attention from a new owner. They come running to me every morning and are a pleasure to see every day.

Adoption subject to satisfactory photos of proposed accomodation, adoption fee and contract.

REHOMED

This little dude is adorable. He is 6 months old and is neutered and vaccinated. Sooty and his brother, sweep (who is also neutered and vaccinated) were born here at Ella’s farm after their mum came in to the sanctuary already pregnant. Sooty and sweep went into foster care when they were weaned and came back recently for neutering. These are little rabbits and are a similar size to a netherland dwarf.

They are currently living separately but I will attempt rebonding them 6 weeks after neutering if they don’t find homes as companions to other buns before.

As you can see, both boys are fluffy so will need regular grooming to prevent matting

I have three boys here who will be ready for adoption over the next 2 weeks!

Two black lionheads and a mini lop.

I’ll post photos shortly

Please don’t enquire about adoption unless you are aware of the RWAF space requirements for pet rabbits. They need more room than you think. Feel free to message me questions

So, I often get asked about appropriate housing for rabbits. Please see a few pics that I’ve shared from another rabbit rescue. They give lots of ideas and, crucially, show the ideal amount of space for your pet bunnies.
The RWAF has some really good guidelines about minimum space required so please have a look before asking about adopting rabbits from Ella’s farm

08/05/2021

So, I often get asked to help with bonding of rabbits so I thought I’d do a little post on it. I don’t offer bonding routinely and this post should go a little way to explain that.
I am no expert! But I have some experience so hopefully it helps.

Rabbits are social animals and therefore need the companionship of their own kind, which is why I only rehome rabbits in pairs or to be a companion to another rabbit. Rabbits generally like other rabbits, and many will pair up quite nicely.

Rabbits are also territorial and hierarchical, meaning that they will scrap with other rabbits over who has what space and who is boss. It can take them WEEKS/MONTHS to figure out their relationship. When they are trying to sort this out there will be mounting, chasing, circling and often consequent fur-flying. Provided they aren’t tearing chunks out of each other then this is NORMAL BEHAVIOUR and is not a sign that they won’t get along.
If your rabbit is a single rabbit and has full roam of your house/garden, your entire house/garden is that rabbit’s territory. If you try and introduce another rabbit into that space, original bunny is highly likely to try and exert dominance/territory rights over new bunny.
Bonding is best attempted on neutral territory, so a space where neither rabbit has been before.
There are numerous ways you can bond rabbits so it is worth reading around the subject before starting.

Of course, there are some pairings that are more likely to work.
The classical pair is a neutered male with a neutered female. But that doesn’t mean you can’t pair two neutered males or two neutered females.
Neutering is important for obvious reasons, but also because entire rabbits are more likely to be territorial/dominant.
It can take more than 6-8 weeks for a rabbit’s hormones to settle after neutering. Therefore, the optimum time for attempting bonding is 6-8 weeks AFTER both rabbits were neutered.

I have space for 6 pairs/single rescue rabbits at my main rescue centre. Rabbits enter a 4 week quarantine, at the end of which they are neutered.
If I then kept them here til they were at optimum time for bonding rabbits would spend a minimum of 10 weeks at the centre. Bonding can then take anywhere from hours to months to get right, and during that time I have to have space for two single buns plus another space that is neutral, taking up half of my rescue spaces. Hence why I don’t offer bonding. I am happy to help if there are issues but I don’t do it routinely.

If you rehome one of my buns as a companion for another bunny they will often be a week to 2 weeks after their neutering op. Which means that you may have to house new bunny separate to original bunny whilst you wait for new bunny’s hormones to settle and for new bunny to settle in. Often this isn’t necessary but there is a chance that it will be, so new owners must be prepared for this. Just because bonding doesn’t work at first doesn’t mean that is won’t work at all, and you just need to give them plenty of time.

Thanks for reading and do get in touch if you have questions

All clear at the vet and ready for their new home over the next 2/3 weeks
Two new arrivals today. These two are sweet little bunnies but they are in a bit of a state. Both had very long nails and the lionhead female has some very large mats in her fur, some of which are affecting her mobility.
Vaccinated today, nails clipped and we’ve started working on those mats
