It’s getting warm out and this is the time of year when groomers all over are asked to shave down double coated dogs because their owners want to keep them cool! For the purpose of this discussion I’m talking only about true double coated dogs, not designer breeds or single coated dogs. For example, goldens, husky’s, pomeranians, shepherd's, labs, etc. Did you know that shaving them can actually do much more harm than good? Here’s why:

1. Their coat is designed to keep them cool. The undercoat they have is thicker in the winter and sheds out in the summer leaving their protective top coat intact.

2. Their top coat acts as a sun shade for their skin. Cutting it does not make them cooler, it actually makes them hotter! Think of it like this, it’s super hot out and if you stripped off all your clothes you would be still be hot. But if you stood under a big shade tree you’d feel much cooler, with or without clothing. Their top coat does the same thing as that shade tree, it provides protection from the sun. Taking away that protection is like you standing naked in direct sunlight. No matter what our summer is going to be brutal, we sweat, our dogs pant, a haircut won’t change that for either us or them.

3. Shaving them can increase their risk of skin cancer since their skin is directly exposed to the suns rays. It’s the same as us going outside without sunscreen. Their top coat is their sunscreen.

4. Shaving them can actually damage their coats permanently. It might not happen to every dog, and it might not happen the first time or even the tenth time you shave them, but in the majority of dogs shaved regularly it will happen eventually. Their top coat will stop growing back leaving them with only a frizzy undercoat which gives them a patchy, dull appearance. This is known as clipper alopecia.

So all that being said, how can you keep them cool?

1. Regular grooming! Bathing, brushing, combing and removing that dead undercoat. A double coated dog should be completely groomed every 4-6 weeks to keep them properly maintained and equipped for the weather.

2. Shave their paw pads. Dogs only sweat through their feet, so removing that thick hair under their feet allows for better airflow and temperature regulation.

3. Do not leave them outside or exercise during the heat of the day. Dawn and dusk are more comfortable for everyone.

Here are a couple photos showing in more detail just how their coats are naturally designed to function.

From July, I am introducing a refer a friend/family reward scheme where you will receive 10% off your dog's next groom after they have visited me for their dog's grooming. In order to qualify for your 10% discount, please ask your friend/family member to mention your name at the time of booking, and I will apply this to your next appointment.

Regular grooming is important to keep your pet's coat in top condition. With that in mind, I would like to politely request that going forward, I will need all clients to book their future appointments at pick up, or you can block book future appointments yourself. This is so your dog's stick to a regular grooming schedule, which allows me to more accurately plan how long each appointment will take.

Keeping to your dog's recommended schedule benefits your dog as they know what to expect and keeps the length of time it takes to groom them to a minimum. Going over their recommended grooming schedule adds extra time to their groom, and so the price will also be more.

Reluctantly, I will have to increase my prices slightly in July due to the continued rising costs of living to be able to keep running my business effectively and, of course, providing for my family.

I would like to take this opportunity to continue to support me and my small local business.

Kind regards,

Sarah.

Happy New Year!
I hope you all had a fabulous Christmas.
Just a reminder if you haven't already, to book your dog's in for their January/February grooms.
Many of my clients like to block book appointments for the year, so they have peace of mind that their dog's appointments are organised for the year ahead.
You can use the link below to book online, or I can book your appointments for you.

I am also currently in the process of working out budget payment plans for some clients and thought I’d give you all this option of payment.

The payment plan is set as a monthly standing order from your bank to mine. This spreads the cost of your pooches grooms over the year instead of 5-6 weeks. Several of my clients find this much easier to manage than trying to find the groom money mid-month. This first plan will run from February.

SETTING UP THIS PLAN WILL ALSO MEAN YOU HAVE PRIORITY BOOKINGS FOR THE YEAR BOOKED IN ADVANCE.

For example;

Scooby's groom costs £60 every 6 weeks, he will need 8 grooms over a 12 month period

£480 per year ÷ 8 grooms = £40 per month

If this is something you would like to discuss with me or set up then please do let me know.

Thank you all for your continued support for my business,

Sarah.

TOO FAT, TOO THIN OR JUST RIGHT?
How to know if your dog is the right weight

One of the most heartening sights for me on this page is the number of followers who send us pictures of their active, healthy BCs who are all of an ideal weight. For being the right weight will not only preserve your dog’s active life for so much longer, it will also spare them so many more unpleasant health issues in older age.

It is also vital for working or competition dogs to maintain the right weight to minimise the risk of injury or excess strain on the heart and joints.

Obesity in dogs, in general, is now becoming as massive a problem as it is in people. Similarly it makes them more vulnerable to so many other illnesses or conditions, ranging from diabetes and arthritis to heart problems and a range of cancers. And seeing as we totally control everything a dog eats, it is also completely avoidable.

WHAT IS AN IDEAL WEIGHT FOR YOUR DOG?
What your dog weighs, on the scales, is not always the best indication of how healthy or ‘right’ their weight is, as collies can come in so many different sizes and body builds. A far better guide can be seen in our illustration, where we look at these key things:

1. WAIST. Does your dog have an immediately obvious ‘waist’ when you look down on them from above? If so, this usually signifies a healthy weight. Similarly, when you run your hands LIGHTLY down their sides, you should EASILY feel their ribs underneath without pressing harder. If your dog looks ‘squarer’ from above, without a more obvious waist and you cannot easily feel their ribs for fat, or without having to press quite hard, the chances are they are pretty overweight. Your dog’s ribs, however, should not actually be sticking out, which could indicate they are UNDERWEIGHT instead.

2. THE ‘TUCK UP’. Dogs of an ideal weight should also have a pronounced ‘tuck up’ where their underbelly tapers up, at an angle, neatly into the groin area (again see illustration). If the underbelly sags down instead, or you cannot see this same slanted angle of ‘tuck up’ your dog is likely to be overweight (though do note some health conditions can also cause swelling of the belly in dogs – covered a bit later).

3. PELVIC BONES. If you put your hand on top of your dog’s ‘bottom’ or hip area, in dogs of ideal weight you should just feel the top of the pelvic bones under the skin. If you cannot easily feel them your dog may be overweight. If they are actually sticking out, your dog may be underweight.

In longer coated dogs you may need to rely more on ‘feel’ than sight to tell if they are the right weight, or look at them when wet. And if in any doubt you can also ask your vet for their opinion.

WHAT TO DO IF YOUR DOG IS OVERWEIGHT
If your dog is overweight, the most important thing to do is accept it. It can be too easy instead to make excuses, or go into denial about it, rather than putting your dog’s health and best interests first, as opposed to your own need to not to have to change what you are doing, or feeding your dog, because this is more comfortable for you.

Weight usually creeps up steadily on dogs for the same reason it does on people – too many extra treats or snacks or portions of food that do not match your dog’s daily exercise levels. Some dogs are also more prone to weight gain than others. But the more overweight your dog gets, the more exercise becomes progressively harder work for them, and takes an ever greater toll on their heart and joints.

You should begin by cutting out all extra snacks, treats and food leftovers and then additionally cutting their daily food portions back by about a quarter to a third, so the reduction is less drastic. If you want to give them treats things like carrot sticks, or lower calorie treats made of fish skin, can be substituted. You want to aim for slow and steadier weight loss over time. Vets can also really help these days with weight loss plans and special diets if required.

WHAT TO DO IF YOUR DOG IS UNDERWEIGHT
People can be so used to seeing overweight dogs in society today – and thinking this ‘normal’ – that very often what they may think is an underweight dog is actually one of perfect weight. Again, if you are not sure check our illustration, or with your vet.

Collies who have been subjected to great trauma or stress – like rescue dogs – can lose weight very rapidly, as can dogs with more super-high metabolisms. Often when the stress element is removed from any dog’s life, their weight will return to normal. However some collies will always be harder to keep weight on than others, but it doesn’t necessarily mean they are not also healthy.

MORE RAPID WEIGHT GAIN OR LOSS
If your dog has suddenly gained or lost weight more rapidly, or over a shorter period of time, then a vet check up is strongly recommended. As conditions like Hypothyroidism or Cushing’s Disease can make dogs gain weight or give them a more ‘pot bellied’ appearance. Other conditions can lead to more dramatic weight loss, so it is always worth ruling these out first.

Generally, it is worth weighing your dog(s) more regularly, like every two or three months, to ensure they are maintaining a more stable, healthy weight. It will also give you a chance to act sooner, rather than later, if they need to lose or gain a bit more weight, or if their weight change is a first sign of something else not going right with their health.

We say this a lot...

Ball . throwers . are . not . good . for . your . dog!

They might be having a great time, but the wear and tear on their joints is no joke.

What is it doing to your dog's joints?
- Repeated micro-trauma to muscles and cartilage is a cause of long-term damage.
- Chasing or even carrying items like a ball can shift your dogs weight distribution to their front legs, putting excessive weight through the joints of the front legs.
- Joints weakened by arthritis will be especially prone to further damage.
- High speeds can double the forces generated in the muscles.
- Braking is thought to be the most dangerous part of ball chasing and often responsible for shoulder injuries.

What can you do instead?
- Make sure to have a short warm up period before more intense exercise.
- Only ever throw the ball a short distance, on surfaces that avoid slipping and sliding.
- Throw below waist height so as to avoid jumping and don't do it repetitively
- Consider alternatives like scent work, varying location of the walk to keep things exciting, or playing hide and seek with the ball rather than playing fetch.
