Another great weekend... I love doing these CPDs, love seeing the dogs improve over the mini practical sessions over the 2 days, love seeing the smiles on the owners/therapists faces and proud moments. Also cant miss out the 'penny dropping' moments and therapists excitedly sharing how they are going to apply their newly learnt skills into their practice. 🥳🥳🤩🤩🤓🤓😎😎🤯🤯

🥳🥳🥳Introducing the Motor Control Sequence 🥳🥳🥳
This may explain why it takes some time for your dog to master your rehab or fitness exercises.
It also supports the methodology I use of practicing good form and getting those bombproof neuromuscular pathway established before we start working on sets and reps or increasing the challenge of the exercise where the body starts to adapt. Quality over quantity. Once the dogs knows the task we than then more clearly identify the signs of fatigue.

I just completed this course...
Can highly recommend this course for all therapists:
✅great info but have your tissues ready🥲 its emotive!
✅even better tools to help your clients along their journey and ultimately helping their dogs.
✅It changed the way I now write vet reports, using the suspicion of chronic pain checklist - short, sweet, to the point and super visual, no prose for vet to have to read through, well branded and you can just add your business card to it
✅already helped a neighbours dog - 'take action now'
✅changed my own spending habits with regards to supplements
✅made me pull my finger out regarding my own Princess Lila Ninja Pants and up my game on her functional exercises to keep her stronger for longer

÷÷ sternal laying ÷÷
Aka a phinx down.
Lila offers a pretty perfect fold back into a down when laying down anywhere other than her bed (or mine).
Brain washing for perfect static postures with duration.
Stand - fold back down - stand is one of the last exercises i teach with regards to strength work as its very complex and requires a lot of skills and control to move in and out of this position. The dogs do well on an aerobic stepper and we can vary the height of the front or back end depending on the goal of three exercise.
However as a functional movement a dog needs to be able rise from their beds. So ensuring a compromised dog can move from a relaxed down rolled over onto one hip, into this sternal lay and push then selves up into a sit then into a stand is an important skill. I use manual handling techniques and luring to facilitate this transition, to rebuild those neuromuscular pathways.

Stepping backwards
EmpowerPhysio
Different technique to get maximum hip extension and reduce spine compression. Using hind foot target to encourage reaching back and hip extension. Using a physical and verbal cue to get the back stepping so he is free to choose his own head and spine position during the movement. I moved back with him to improve the quality of the movement and regulate the speed of his steps and ensure he reverses straight - using each hindlimb equally.
Ideally I'd like a lower head position as some dog would struggle to get core activation and lift through the back unless their heads are lower. However lowering head reduces the weight bearing in the hind limbs so it's a balance/

Same exercise - different reward placement to control speed and head position (and therefore influence spine position) with no rear foot target (so no task for the dog to complete).
Reduced hip extension but neutral spine and core engagement without roaching. She has a very upright pelvis and poor angulation in the pelvic limb which also reduces hindlimb retraction.
Although she loves this exercise I would not use this method or this exercise if the goal was to increase hip extension, but I might use it to eccentrically load hamstrings and concentrically contract gluteals while activating paraspinals and diaphragm, and adding coins in the bank on the proprioception and balance bank account :-)
1st in the series...pulling together all the benefits to teaching your dog simple foot targeting...share if you think it will benefit a friend and their dog.
Useful for every day life, fitness and conditioning and rehab.🤓🤓😎😎

Last weekend I delivered 2 days CPD 'Canine Exercise Rehabilitation - in Practice' to 12 therapists with Kirsti Dix from Canine Rebalance. Thanks to Fliss Parris from SVPS education for asking us to share our passion and knowledge.
Feedback was really positive so will be taking it all on board....watch this space for new (very practical) CPDs coming soon...
