A little update on Poppy . She is coming on so well! The 1st visit Poppy didn't even feel comfortable coming into the garden. With a few short visits at her pace, she was calm and comfortable today. She was eating her treats and staying close to her owner, who gives her confidence. We finished with a walk round the field πΎ
O Barney π can you believe Barney used to be anxious when he first came to me? We have built up a great relationship and followed the same routine every visit. Barney is free to come off the table (but rarely chooses too). His fab owner @little_birdsoph has worked so hard with his training and confidence building.
O Wurzel you melt my heart β€οΈ Wurzel has been coming to me since a puppy. He takes everything in his stride and is the best boy! He kept jumping back on the table after we were done as he knows he gets a treat π
Dexi has been coming to me for a while and finds parts of the groom tricky to manage.
We have worked at her pace, adapting parts of the groom to make it more manageable for her.
We use the quieter stand dryer and give her breaks from the table if needed.
She has a few minutes in the salon before we start the groom.
Her coat can get knotty quite quickly, so she has been coming more frequently to reduce the groom time.
At the end of her last groom, she took some treats from us before she went home.
This groom she was feeling calm enough to take treats before we had even started, which for her is massive!
Some dogs, like Dexi, will never love the grooming process but we can make changes to make it easier. By being consistent and building a relationship with each dog, they can begin to build trust.

ACE (Animal Centred Education) Free work can be used for a variety of reasons within the groom room. You can observe behaviour and levels of confidence. Using different textures and foods can help build a picture of anything the dog really enjoys or any surfaces they might avoid. Dogs that lack in confidence can explore freely, engaging their senses and the sniffing, licking and chewing release those 'feel good' chemicals. I used it with Winnie as she can be anxious. She shows this with high energy behaviour. She is very food motivated and was a natural. She made light work of all the food, moving around and checking each area for any treats that she had missed the 1st time around.
