As promised to my classes, here is the video of me teaching Hades to perform a chin rest on an object. Believe it or not, he had never done this before the video- but he has done lots of shaping before! I started off by clicking and rewarding interest in the stool. He quickly picked up on the fact he would get a click and reward if he put his chin against the stool. Note how I feed him in position to reinforce it further. Once he is consistently targeting his chin to the stool, I start to gradually increase the time he maintains the position by waiting a few seconds before clicking and rewarding.

This behaviour can come in handy for consensual handling tasks, with this specific training session aimed at using this behaviour for Hades’ monthly injections in the future.

Hello everyone! Thank you for your lovely messages on my previous post ❤️

Just a notice that I am competing this weekend so won’t be available for training services and may take a little longer to reply to any messages.

I am also away next weekend, again competing. I will be working the Friday (April 19th) morning and will be in contact with the clients who usually have their sessions in the afternoon to rearrange. There will be no puppy class on this evening!

I have gotten in touch with many of you but for those who aren’t aware…

This is very hard to write but I will be shutting down Barker’s Academy on April 30th. All walking and training services will cease from this date.

April classes will be unaffected and will go ahead as normal.

I am incredibly fortunate to have been offered an amazing job opportunity which I have accepted. I will be following my passion, helping people and animals in need. But this does mean that I will have to close down my little business.

It has been a tough, hard three years, starting up this little business when I couldn’t even drive. I used to walk between clients, walking on average 22k steps a day, slowly building up my clientele until I passed my driving test in 2022 and the business really took off. Some of these walking clients I still walk to this day and are going to be so sorely missed.

A lot of the dogs I walk I have known since they entered my puppy classes and have gone all the way from completing the puppy and adolescent classes, to doing various workshops, the adult course and trick training. This job has been so so rewarding, helping teach owners how to form a formidable bond with their dogs and training dogs to reach their utmost potential.

Thank you to everyone who has supported me every step of the way. Thank you for all 30 of the 5 star reviews I have received and the constant recommendations. Without you, none of this would have been possible.

I am sure this is not the end forever, but for now, goodbye ❤️

PLEASE NOTE THAT APRIL ADOLESCENT AND TRICK TRAINING COURSES WILL BE UNAFFECTED AND WILL STILL FINISH MAY 7th 😊

The last weekly puppy class at burgess hill Methodist church will be April 27th 🐾🐶

Hi everyone! I am now back from my weekend in Cornwall, thank you for all your good luck wishes we had a great time.

Just some general housekeeping. Please please please make sure you keep up to date with your invoices. This business is my only source of income so when invoices are paid weeks after they are due it really does effect me. Just think how you would feel if your pay day was late 🥲

And a friendly reminder that if you sign up for classes, you do not have a confirmed space until you pay the deposit. Unfortunately I cannot afford to keep a space for you unless I have payment as in the past I’ve had people drop out just days before, leaving me unable to fill the space and out of pocket.

For those who may be interested in a group walk for their dog, I have had a rare slot come available for 10:30 every Tuesday in the burgess hill/wivelsfield/ditchling/hassocks area. Please message me if interested (your dog must have a reliable recall!) ☺️

Here is one of our runs at the weekend- a lovely run, just unfortunately skipped a few weave poles!

I still have spaces available on my trick training course starting April 16th at plumpton college, 6-7pm. This runs over a course of four weeks on Tuesday evenings. It’s great for confidence building and you will learn how to train a variety of tricks such as roll-over, weaving in and out of legs and even skateboarding! We also dabble in agility foundation skills and scentwork basics. This course is suitable for any breed, size and age of dog ☺️❤️

I also run weekly, drop in puppy classes at burgess hill Methodist church, 7-8pm every Friday. Pop me a message if you’re interested 🥰

I have one more space available on my six week adolescent dog course starting April 2nd at plumpton college, 7-8pm. This is for dogs between 6-18 months and perfect for those who have just hit the tricky teenage stage! If your dog has developed selective hearing, needs to work on remaining calm around other dogs, or to simply gain confidence/brush up on their training- this is the perfect course for you 🤩

I also have a limited number of spaces remaining on my four week trick training course starting April 16th, 6-7pm at plumpton college. Perfect for confidence building, you will learn how to train a multitude of tricks whilst also dabbling in agility foundations and scentwork.

Weekly drop in puppy classes recommence April 5th, running every Friday at burgess hill Methodist church, 7-8pm. Perfect for puppies between 2-6 months of age.

Just a friendly reminder that I am away from next Thursday (28th) for the weekend competing 🫶❤️

I still have a couple of spaces remaining on my adolescent course starting April 2nd at plumpton college, 7-8pm. This runs for six weeks and is for dogs aged 6-18 months. Perfect if you’ve just hit that ‘teenage phase’ where your dog develops selective hearing and starts boundary pushing!

I also have a few spaces remaining on my trick training course starting April 16th at plumpton college, 6-7pm. This runs for four weeks and is suitable for any age, breed and size. Learn how to teach your dog a basic trick routine as well as dabble in some agility foundations and scentwork.

As there has been little interest for my puppy course starting in April, I am planning to run a trick training course instead. This will start April 16th (6-7pm) at plumpton college and run for four weeks.

I will teach you how to train basic tricks that can be incorporated into a heelwork routine, as well as covering some agility foundation skills and scentwork. Your dog will also learn how to skateboard 😁🛹

This course is suitable for all ages, breeds and sizes. Due to the size of the venue, nervous/reactive dogs are also welcome to attend as long as they are not overly disruptive (eg. Barking non-stop).

Please message me if you’re interested 😊❤️

🐶🐾The puppy course provides you with all the skills to give puppy the best start in life. We cover everything from loose lead walking and recall, to impulse control, confidence building and of course all the essential socialisation puppy requires 🐶 🐾

❤️✨Has your dog hit adolescence (6-18 months)? Are they pushing boundaries, over-excitable around other dogs or perhaps they have developed selective hearing?! My adolescent course is perfect for those struggling with the difficult teenage stage. We cover everything from loose lead walking and recall, to impulse control and learning how to remain calm around distractions. The course focuses on training our dogs how to remain focused and relaxed around other dogs- reactive/nervous dogs are more than welcome ❤️🐾

Hello everyone! I am now back from a long weekend at Crufts, ready to reply to all your messages and enquiries. Thank you as always for your patience. Please bear with me this week as I have a chunky essay I am in the middle of completing ❤️

And, just a friendly reminder, I am away this Saturday competing. Therefore I have some availability for 121s on Sunday 🥰 Message me if you’re interested

04/03/2024

Hello everyone,

Just a polite reminder that Sunday and Mondays are my days off. Therefore, over the weekend you may have a delay in reply from me unless your message is extremely urgent. There may be longer delays over the next couple of months in my replies as I have a very heavy workload of uni due to being in my final year. Feel free to just give me a nudge if your enquiry appears to go unanswered 🥺

I appreciate your patience on this and hope you can sympathise with how difficult it is to run a business in this current climate, along with juggling everything else. As always, I’m endlessly grateful for everyone’s ongoing support❤️🫶

Just a little of what we get up to at the Friday puppy workshop! A challenging leave it demonstrated perfectly by foreign rescue puppy Xena. My classes are all about teaching you the skills to train behaviours that we can eventually practice in more realistic scenarios (such as ‘accidentally’ dropping some food!).

Last night’s puppy workshop 🥹🥰

Just a friendly reminder that next week there will be no FRIDAY puppy class. Class will recommence March 15th. Please message if you’re interested in attending 😊

Once in a while our groomers encounter a problem. And it really *is* a problem.
It’s caused by the use of “homemade deterrent training aids” like water spray bottles.
“It’s just a bit of water, no harm done” is the general thought when using a spray bottle on a dog but even leaving aside the positive only vs negative reinforcement training debate for those better qualified, the use of spray bottles as a punishment for your pooch can create a *huge* problem for your groomer and for your vet.
Groomers use many spray products to help them groom your dog. Some of them are luxury additions to the process, yes, but many spray products are an essential component of the groom. Such as sprays to help get through matting painlessly.
When a dog who has been negatively reinforced or “corrected” with a spray bottle at home comes in, they are, at best, confused and alarmed to find themselves “punished” with a de-matting spray when they’re doing nothing naughty. At worst they can be frightened and reactive/aggressive towards the unsuspecting groomer.
Imagine too the harm it’s doing to their behaviour at home if they believe themselves being “punished” or “corrected” with a de-matting spray at the groomer’s for sitting/standing nicely on the table. Perhaps they’ll learn their lesson and stop being willing to sit or stand nicely at home?
In addition, some treatments at the vet’s will be spray based. Teaching your dog to fear or at least want to avoid spray bottles could be adding masses of extra stress into an already stressful vet visit.

So. In conclusion, let’s relegate those spray bottles to the cleaning cupboard and try some other method of training. And if you’re only now realising the problems a spray bottle can cause, make sure to warn your groomer so they can find alternative ways to apply products rather than stress your doggo. 🥰
