Am excited !!!! When I was studying canine behaviour and psychology one of my favourite modules was the canine communication and body language. I find it fascinating. I love to hone my observation skills and try to predict behaviour. So now I've got this amazing book (all 468 pages and 1300 photographs) which is an extraordinary pictorial journey through the emotional world of the dog. There's also a workbook for me fill out. Whoop.
This will definitely help me fine tune my own dog-reading skills and give me the means to understand , and help, my/our dogs as never before.

How Rottweilers Got Their Markings

A long time ago, when men were alone and afraid on this new earth, the Great Being looked over all the dogs that had been created. He wanted that one special one, the one who would forever be the perfect companion for mankind.

There were fast dogs, long and sleek, there were massive dogs, slow but sure, dogs with keen noses, dogs with keen hearing and dogs who could hunt down lions. Dogs who could retrieve and dogs who could herd sheep. All of these were good dogs, but not what the creator had in mind.

Finally there was one dog. He looked rather plain. Medium to large sized, and all black, with a head like a bear and long tail. The dog was to be tested, to see if he was the one to be at people's side forever. And so the plain, black "bear like" dog was sent to mans fire. At first the people feared him. But the dog looked down....

" I am sent to be at your side, to be part of all the man does". "You are black and strong like a bear! What if you eat our children?" they spoke. "I would not do that, "said the dog,"for I love man."

For three days and two nights the dog went with man while he hunted, and helped track down game, he protected their flocks, and chased away the wild animals who sought to harm them. He pulled their loads and supplies, and guarded their valuables. On the third night, a small girl came to him. She was frightened by dreams she had. So the plain black dog laid with her, and his head rested gently upon her. As she dreamed of scary creatures, the dog entered her dreams and fought them off. If she dreamed she was lost in the darkest quicksand, the dog would run to pull her out. All night long the dog nevered from the little girls side. All night long he battled the demons in her sleep. When she awoke she hugged tightly her new friend, and kissed him once on each cheek, and above each eye. Her hands stroked his feet where he had waded in the quicksand, her arms hugged tightly his chest, and stroked his powerful muzzle and throat. Giggling and playing with her new friend and protector she even patted his behind. The child and dog became inseparable, and the dog felt only undying love for the child.

The Geat Being whispered in the dogs ear, then. "You have passed your test, for many dogs can hunt and guard and herd, but you were not only willing to give your life, you went into the world of man and entered his darkest dreams and fears. You did not run, but stayed by his side. You have earned the love of even the youngest child, as it should be". When the Great Beings voice faded like a gentle breeze, the plain black dog shivered with happiness, and all the places the little girl had touched and hugged him became a wonderful mahogany color. And the Rottweiler was sent to be at the side of the people, where is his place. But always in his noble heart is a special place of love, for the little ones, The children

Things that will not improve your dog’s behavior:

👎🏻 being a stronger alpha

👎🏻 Making your dog wait for you to go through doors first

👎🏻 Taking your dog’s stuff away to prove you can

👎🏻 Using collar corrections

👎🏻 Physically pushing and pulling on your dog to move them or get them into sits/downs

👎🏻 Messing with your dog while they eat

👎🏻 Thinking that your dog is spiteful or trying to “get back” at you

👎🏻 Forcing your dog off of furniture to prove its “yours”

👎🏻 Forcing your dog to deal with something even if they are afraid or growling

👎🏻 Looking at aggression as something that needs to be punished out

👎🏻 Forcing your dog onto their back to get them to “submit”

👎🏻 Forcing your dog to “face their fears” by forcing interactions with other dogs and people

👎🏻 Relying on equipment that causes discomfort or pain to control them

👎🏻 Responding to a dog behaving aggressively with more of your own aggression

👎🏻 Putting your dog on a “nothing in life is free” protocol

👎🏻 Not allowing your dog to sniff and use their nose

👎🏻 Take advice from every vet, groomer, breeder, and neighbor who have no formal training or study in behavior

👎🏻 Take advice blindly from the internet

Things that will improve your dog’s behavior:

🐕 First and foremost, learning how to speak their language and becoming fluent in dog body language

🐩 Committing to positive reinforcement training to proactively teach your dog the skills they need

🐕‍🦺 Eliminating corrections from your training

🐶 Noticing the things that trigger your dogs misbehaviors, then training a new response or managing your dog around them

🐕 Setting up the environment to benefit your dog

🐩 Allowing your dog to sniff and explore the world with their nose

🐕‍🦺 Daily enrichment activities and allowing your dog to be a dog

🐶 Being generous with affection and attention when your dog wants it

🐕 Listening to precursors to aggressive behavior such as growling, stiffening, and avoidance so that your dog doesn’t feel the need to escalate to biting

🐩 Hiring a qualified professional before you even bring your dog home so you know what to do from the start

These lists are obviously not complete, but if you’ve ever been told to do something in that first list, ignore that advice and find someone more qualified to help you out! In the meantime, aim to meet the goals in the second list to help your dog become the best dog they can be!

So because I talk about mantrailing alot. I wanted to explain what it entails. So it's the same training as search and rescue dogs get. The dog takes scent from the hiding person and has to track them to find them. It's such good fun. Great for all dogs of all ages and breeds. Even if your dog has reactivity or other behaviour problems. We just adjust how we do it. Once the dog has found the "missing" person they get a food reward or a ball whatever motivates your dog. We all take turns in hiding for the dogs whilst someone stays with the cars and dogs. Hope that's clarified it a bit. Now my rottie doing the same training but thos time Dex on his bed in a stay. Unedited so few bloopers. I train them for fun but to also give mental stimulation. Plus I've got the training bug back that I recently lost so win win all around xx
