This will be a long post so apologies.
As I’m sure nearly everyone is aware, the American Bully XL is undergoing being banned in the UK now and will become the 5th banned dog in the UK, the other dogs being the APBT, Japanese Mastiff, Brazilian Mastiff and the Argentinian Mastiff and a cross which is crossed with any of them.
This is hugely unfortunate for the breed and the responsible owners who put the time, effort and money into creating well balanced and behaved dogs. The breeders who breed the XL bullies for size and money are the ones at fault for these attacks, they have no care in the world for where the puppies end up or what they end up doing.
In a lot of bullies mastiff breeds are heavily influenced creating a bigger dog, now with that you evidently get a cross breed, the problem isn’t with them being a cross the problem is they are sold to people who have no idea about the breed they’re getting as “Pure bred XL bullies” when in fact they are not and so do not act how the breed should. Research your breed before you get it and pedigrees before you buy a dog and know your pedigree! Certain traits the parents may not display can pop up within litters.
The UK needs to have stricter rules on dog ownership and breeding which if failed to keep up with there should be more serious consequences for doing so. There will be a bigger breed that will face the same fate without stricter laws on dogs in the UK, likely the Cane Corso or possibly even the Malinois in my opinion, though I don’t think they would ban the Malinois due to the high demand in law enforcement but the Cane Corso if it turns out anything like the bully definitely would face the same fate. It’s easy to ban a breed, yes attacks die down for a while until people are starting to breed bigger and more aggressive dogs because there’s nothing stopping them.
If you own an XL American bully specifically or even an American Bully now is the time to show you are an advocate for your breed, train your dog, expose your dog to different environments, teach them to be neutral. Hiding your dog away and walking them early hours in the morning and night is not helping the breed, if your dog needs training reach out to trainers, trainers will not judge you, that’s why trainers exist, to help those who need it.
Muzzle training is also going to be needed I feel, when they are banned they will need to be muzzled in public, from my understanding they will have the same treatment as the APBT (Pit Bull) which includes having your dog neutered, muzzled etc in public. Not everyone likes muzzle training but it is especially important, even if you get a lead that says “FRIENDLY” on it just so it makes you feel better about having a muzzled dog. As long as your dog is under control in public no one should have an issue, whether you believe your dog would hurt somebody or not it is imprerritoent you have control of your dog 24/7 especially bully owners with what’s going on, but yes, this is a huge low for the bully community and also shows the lack of care from the UK, so easy to ban a dog while supposed to be a nation of dog lovers nothing is being done to address the real issue of poor breeding practices and poor ownership, as I’ve said another breed will replace the XL bully and become the new trend, fashion and status symbol, attacks will rise and that dog will then be banned. When will they learn they need to change ownership laws and not dogs until something changes?!
Follow up, to help people understand the dangers of the XL being banned.
They will not go off of whether your dog is a purebred American Bully XL (even if you can prove it is with a pedigree, although I don’t see why you would want to now) will be measurements, like with the pit bull, although a purebred dog they don’t care! This means if you have a large breed or even potentially medium sized dog with a large blocky head your dog is automatically susceptible to being a victim of this ban, they do not care whether the dog is a purebred or a mix, they will be given size measurements to base/judge dogs off as to whether they deem your dog an XL bully. To my mastiff and bully breed owners as a whole this is a risk to our dogs, not only the XL bully owners. Please do not assume your dog is automatically safe because it isn’t an XL bully as the police can seize your dog for it looking like an XL bully, it is very important you do not let anyone such as the police into your home to “just look at the dog” and absolutely do not ever sign any paperwork you will be handing your dog over to them.
Dogs that are seized do have people and organisations fighting to return them home but it isn’t always done and definitely isn’t easy some dogs are seized for months and die in the police kennels, some people aren’t told until days after and sometimes weeks. I strongly advise people to research into what happened to peoples dogs who are seized in the UK and hear other peoples stories about their dogs to keep your dogs safe.
Now is probably the most important time that people are training and having control over their dogs, whether you own an XL bully or not it’s possible one day this could be your breed they’re looking into banning so I can not express enough, train and control your dogs in public especially but also at home, you never know who doesn’t like your dog and can report it, unfortunate but true.
If anyone has any questions about this feel free to message me and I will answer to the best of my ability as there is currently no word about what will 100% happen to the current XL bullies, I also do not suggest or advise anyone to produce any XL bully litters, you will be doing these dogs no favour. I’d also like to add if anyone has an XL bully they want me to take on I absolutely would love to, no breed discrimination to the bully from me.
