Let's talk seeds 🌱

As summer approachs grass seeds become a frequent problem for dogs, especially those with long fur
They can pick these up on their coat from running through long grass.

‼️Tip‼️
It's a good idea to check your dog's feet and ears for grass seeds after exercise, especially if you have walked through areas with long grass.

Grass seeds have very sharp ends, so although tiny, if they become trapped in your dog’s fur, they can burrow down and pierce their skin, ouch!. They can also get stuck in your dog’s paws, ears, eyes or nose. If your dog becomes injured by a grass seed, it can be very painful. In rare cases, grass seeds can go under the skin and travel to other areas of your dog’s body, such as their chest. Once they get under the skin, they can become difficult to find.
This is a common problem every year and knowing the signs and what to do it key ⬇️⬇️

1) suddenly shaking, scratching and pawing at the ears whilst seeming distressed is a common symptom (as long as your dog isn't know for ear infections, allergies etc). They may be hesitant for you to go near the ear, tilt their head and be very stressed.

2) chewing and licking at their pawpads, lameness or swelling between the toes may indicate a stuck grass seed. This could be between the toes, in the paw pad or embedded into the foot. Always look for small entry point wounds and any tenderness in the paws

3) sudden violent sneezing not related to allergies or other medical issues. This could mean a grass seed is stuck up the nose and they're trying to remove it

4) redness, swelling or eye discharge no treated to any other medical problem. These are coming signs of irritation in the eye and the body's response to trying to remove it

If any of the above symptoms are new and not a regular occupancy due to a pre existing medical illness, allergies or medical issue its always advised to see a vet.

Grass seeds not embedded into your dog should be removed as soon as. Any grass seeds slightly embedded should be removed by a vet as they can be painful to remove yourself. Keeping their fur short and groomed is a good way to help prevent the issue as well as staying away from long grass
