🌟What a Physiotherapy session includes🌟
🌟 Dynamic assessment - horses will be walk and trotted in a straight line. Then if necessary asked to do small circles on both reins. Lunging can be included at this point if required. This is done to assess the horses natural way of going and how this could be affecting their musculature or vice versa.
🌟 Static assessment - the horses conformation will be assessed as well as how the horse feels most comfortable standing.
🌟 Palpatory assessment - the horses musculature will be assessed through palpation. During this I will be looking at muscle tone and bulk, trigger points, range of motion and for any abnormalities.
🌟 Treatment - the physio treatment will be dependent on the horse but may include manual therapies, stretches, pulsed magnetic field therapy, laser, ultrasound and heat pad.
🌟 Exercise plan - the horse will be prescribed exercises dependent on what is found during the assessments. These can be carried out by the owner/rider between appointments to help improve the horse musculoskeletal system.
These videos show just how beneficial kinesiology taping can be. In the first video you can see that the horse drops it’s left tuber coxae (hip) more than the left. On the second video you can see the right and left tuber coxae drop more evenly, this is due to kinesiology tape aiding proprioception.🐴
Don’t forget that poles are a great exercise for dogs as well as horses!
🐶 Improve range of motion
🐶 Improve proprioception
🐶 Engage core
🐶 Help maintain joint health
Top tip: A lot of dogs will run through the poles to get a treat at the end. To allow the dog to benefit from the poles, slow them down by placing a small treat between each pole.

Pole work has a huge amount of benefits for both horses and dogs and can be done in many variations. It is important to start doing pole work slowly as this is when the animal benefits most as they are able to stretch over their backs. Perfect exercise to do in hand or ridden!
