Field stories:- we have planted all the trees in the field and they’re a bit like family, we’ve watched them grow and nurtured them. The christmas trees were the first and boy they were hard work to keep alive, Neil from Newsholme Christmas Trees said “you’ll only need to water them for the first year and then they’ll be ok”. Oh no! 3 years later we were still watering them! Now though look at them, they are now self sufficient (thank goodness) and they look fabulous. Look at their new growth (the brighter green on their tips). I love how one is slightly wonky and one is more pear shaped.

Do you ever take a moment and look at them? If not do. 🐾🐾

We’ve had a couple of occasions this week (and most weeks to be fair) where people have contacted us saying they had tried to book the field and have had payments taken but no booking email.

When we’ve looked into it they were trying to book an appointment for 2 hours time. If you hop on the book now button at 10am you will see the 12 noon appointment but by the time you complete it will have gone and so your booking won’t complete. So if it’s 9am and you want to book, choose the 11.30am slot if it’s 8.50am you can choose the 11am slot but be quick!! If its 8.59am your pushing it. 🤣🤣

The 3 second Rule

Do you know what it is and why if you don’t you should.

We were away at the weekend at a dog friendly festival, there were dogs everywhere which was great to see. Lots of opportunity for training in a busy environment for Hamish.

The 3 second rule is just that and the peeps at Battersea put it quite succintly:-

USE THE THREE-SECOND RULE

If the other owner says it’s OK for your dogs to meet, get into a position where your dog’s lead is relaxed so the dogs can interact normally, and they aren’t straining on the lead. Remember, face to face dog greetings can cause tension, so allow both dogs to circle towards the other dog’s rear end from side on, and keep things brief to begin with. Move around with your dog as they circle to make sure the leads don’t tangle. It’s best to position yourself next to your dog’s shoulder. This means you can keep your lead loose while the dogs interact, but you’re also close enough to gain control of your dog quickly if you need to.

Keep introductions short by following the “three second rule”; count to three as the dogs sniff each other, say thanks or nice to meet you to the owner, and then excitedly call your dog away and continue your walk. Keep praising your dog for walking away with you and reward them with a tasty treat like chicken for coming away from such a tempting distraction! By keeping interactions short you can make sure the experience stays positive for both dogs.

The full article can be found here:- https://www.battersea.org.uk/pet-advice/dog-advice/how-introduce-your-dog-other-dogs-walks #:~:text=Keep%20introductions%20short%20by%20following,away%20and%20continue%20your%20walk.

A good article about dogs that are working breeds whether they’re just pets or going to work its important we give them an outlet to exercise their skills.

🐿️ Understanding your dogs prey drive 🏃🏻‍♂️

Gundogs, like Retrievers, Spaniels, and Pointers, are wired with an inherent prey drive, a trait that's been carefully honed over generations for their hunting prowess. While this instinct is a fundamental part of their nature, it can present challenges for owners who may not engage it appropriately.

Without a proper outlet for their prey drive, gundogs may exhibit behavior issues that stem from frustration, boredom, or simply a need to express their innate instincts. From chasing squirrels to obsessively stalking shadows, these behaviors can escalate if left unchecked, leading to accidents, conflicts, and stress for both the dog and their family.

But here's the good news: providing outlets for their natural behavior is not only possible but essential for their well-being. Whether your gundog works alongside you in the field or a cherished family pet, engaging their prey drive in constructive ways is key to preventing behavior issues and fostering a harmonious relationship.

So, how can you channel your gundog's prey drive in a positive direction? It starts with understanding their needs and providing activities that satisfy their instincts while keeping them safe and fulfilled.

As a gundog owner, investing in professional training and guidance can also make a world of difference. Experienced trainers can help you understand your dog's unique needs and develop tailored strategies to manage their prey drive effectively. From impulse control exercises to recall training, these techniques empower you to harness your gundog's instincts in a way that enhances their quality of life and strengthens your bond.

Remember, whether they're flushing out game in the field or retrieving a toy in the garden, gundogs thrive when their natural behaviors are embraced and encouraged. By providing outlets for their prey drive, you're not only preventing behavior issues but also nurturing a happy, fulfilled companion who enriches your life every day.

The sun has got his hat on 😎😎😎😎😎

It’s is set to be warm this weekend, remember we have the early 6am (no noise) slots for our regulars. There is shade in the field until 11am and then later from 4pm onwards. So you can bring your dogs and they can keep cool (if you can stop them running around🤣).

If you don’t have the direct booking link please be organised and email me with plenty of notice (ideally on Friday or before) to book a weekend appointment.

This is Ella who when she was younger used to come and look after the field. We train our dogs together and she works her spaniels and labs. We’ve never needed her to come and walk our dogs but if I needed to I would use Ella in a heartbeat. She loves dogs and is a good positive trainer of her own dogs. She no longer lives in the village but if you need a dog walker consider her.

Thank you for your patience and kindness this last weekend following changes we have had to make to weekend bookings. We have had to make these changes because sadly a few customers behave like idiots and we're fed up with dealing with them on a weekend when we should be spending time off. If you rarely use our field or are new to using our field please be organised and contact us Monday to Friday to book your weekend slot. Please be kind and be patient we will no longer tolerate rudeness and impatience. Read below for more info this has been taken from our website www.cliffedogfield.co.uk/ which I have now updated.

Weekend Bookings
Weekend bookings can no longer be made using the Book Now Button below. If you are an existing customer of ours please email [email protected] and we will email you the link to book yourself. If you use our field infrequently then you will need to email us tell us when you would like to book and how many dogs and households will be using the field and we will book the appointment for you and send you the link to pay. If you have never used our field and would like to please head to our Rules page and read all the rules carefully before emailing us. Please be organised and if you know you would like to use the field email us through the week because we don't always see emails sent on a weekend. Please be kind, thank you for your patience and understanding.

Cliffe Dog Park offers uninterrupted, private slots for enclosed dog walking, with no distractions from other walkers and their pets.

We don’t need one of these anymore but what a great idea for those of you that do. I might get one or something similar made to hang on the dog field gate though. Little job for me in the next day or so. Bruno Hannemann can we get something made?

Last year we were approached by one of our valued sponsors who specialises in dog behaviour and puppy training about creating a yellow sash for dog owners. She explained to us that some of her clients were reluctant to wear our tabard for various reasons, feeling self conscious, overheating etc. A couple of try outs and it was found that the sash was more noticeable and people readily put their dogs on lead when it was spotted.

You ask and of course we listen, so after and bit of to-ing and fro-ing with our manufacturer and our sponsor, we now have in stock our new Yellow Dog UK “MY DOG NEEDS SPACE” sash. This new addition to our product range offers dog owners an alternative option to our highly recommended tabard while communicating their dog’s need for space. Available on the webshop, Amazon and eBay. And I promise next on the list is the double-ended lead!

XL Bullies

If you own an XL Bully (or have several) you are still very welcome to come and use our field. If your dog now needs to be registered they must be on a lead and muzzled until you enter the field and lock the external gate behind you. Once in the field they do not need leads or a muzzle. 😊🐾🐾🐾
The only thing you can’t do now I’m afraid is meet friends or family at the field, sorry!

If you have an XL bull breed type that doesn’t meet the criteria to be registered you are still very welcome to use the field as you always have.

I will be updating our terms and conditions to reflect this on the website and as ever if you have any questions get in touch by emailing [email protected]

Many thanks Bev & Rich

This morning the field is flooded at the bottom. If you’ve booked for today and would prefer your dogs not to swim 🏊‍♂️ please reschedule. If your dogs like ours loves a paddle 🚣, book in. The d**e that is flooded and overtopped the bank can be tidal so it will probably go quite quickly (sometimes here in the morning gone by the afternoon) but with all the rain who knows🤷🏼‍♀️🐾🐾😊

I do love this time of year and today for me is a perfect autumnal day, sunny and dry. We have picked up leaves in the field and given as much of it as we dare its final cut of the year (hopefully 🤞🏻). Enjoy the rest of your weekend and if your coming to the field we’ve done this just for you 😊. Enjoy it. 🐾🐾🐾🐕🐕
