Any interest in pullets later in the year? I have a strong desire to hatch and read some birds! Probably a hybrid or cross that’s a good egg layer. Just gauging interest 😊

Long overdue update. Starting to think to the future, 2023 has been marred with illness, predators and generally just keeping head above water. I’m picking up 6 young hybrids on the 1st October, 3 Bovan Goldline and 3 Whitestar (leghorn). Once in lay these will provide a welcome boost to egg numbers. The Bovan Goldline is a cross between a Rhode Island Red rooster and a Light Sussex hen. This cross produces a friendly, hardy and prolific egg layer. I’m having thoughts of maybe breeding some of these in the future! New runs are being planned, nothing is going to happen soon though!

So very nearly finished! Just got the middle sections of mesh and cover to go over middle section. Absolute labour of love (for Nick Morgan) All the mesh is buried around the perimeter, so much hard work has gone into this! Blood, sweat but no tears (until a tree lands on top 🤣).

Coops in place, to be raised up so they can dust bathe under. Middle section will be covered to remain dry. 😁😁😁

Getting there with the runs thanks to Nick! The wire going on and getting buried will be quite a lot of work 😅

Started building the new run today! For now it will consist of two 6x6 metre runs with a 3x6 in the middle. This allows me to put the coop in the middle and then only provide access to one 6x6 run at a time. Realistically can only house 8-10 hens but it will be the state of the grass that will dictate hen numbers. No breeding this year except maybe some wee bantams for myself. I just want to see some hens back on grass!

Not to be beaten by one animal- we have recovered enough from the trauma to start planning new, smaller, fully enclosed runs within the huge run. Very happy to be feeling more positive and looking forward and not back! I’ll post updates of how it all takes shape!

Keeping your hens safe-

https://www.raising-happy-chickens.com/pine-marten.html

Having lost 15 hens in one night we found out it was a pine marten and not a stoat as previously thought. Two years ago it was a pair of stoats that did the killing though. Electric fence was switched off, I had left the shed door open, this is all on me but I’d like to remind others not to be so complacent. I’m down to 17 hens with only two of them laying so at this point in time I don’t know if I’ll be supplying eggs to the public this year.

They look cute, but they're one of chickens' greatest enemies. Learn how to identify and deter members of the weasel family.

The hens have all but stopped laying for the winter now and enjoying a well earned rest! Thank you to everyone that’s supported me over the last few months. By all means please message me on my personal account (Claire Morgan) to see if any eggs are available as a few will still lay over the next couple of months but not enough to fulfill regular orders. Here’s to spring! Thanks

Sadly due to ever increasing feed prices I am having to retire my business, only keeping on a few hens to supply ourselves and neighbours with eggs. I can’t afford this hobby and come winter when no eggs are laid I can’t afford to feed them.
My flock are all super healthy but carriers of myco- if anyone would like a pure Copper Marans cockerel, pure Gold Laced Wyandotte cockerel or outstanding Cream Legbar hens let me know- this would only apply to those that suspect they have or have had myco in their flock. Birds are free but pick up strictly from here. No time wasters please.

Achieved my colour goals!

Please can I ask anyone coming to collect eggs to drive slowly on the drive- various dogs “wandering” about top and bottom! 😁
Thank you

Sorry to announce but there will be no hens, chicks or pure breed hatching eggs - certainly not until the Autumn.
I’ve gone back to work and along with the complications that come with breeding from a flock with mycoplasma it’s just all too much.
Lots of eating eggs available!
If anyone wants hatching eggs that are pot luck, mixed breed it will be pick up only at an arranged time. I currently have three pure breed cockerels in with about 20 pure breed hens so it would be a real mix!
Who knows, I may hatch some complete randoms but hens wouldn’t be available until the end of 2022. I’ve not got round to splitting the breeds up, made more difficult because the birds roost in the trees! So any hens would be Heinz 57s with surprise coloured eggs!
