This week I had another session with Tilly, we had a look at how her muzzle training is going (absolutely amazingly!) And we revisited reactivity towards some people now that her dog reactivity has vastly improved- Tilly has even been making friends with a couple of other dogs and I couldn't be more proud of the progress she's made so far ❤️

Radley won our £1 emergency stop challenge on Saturday 👏 I can't tell you how tricky this challenge is and Radley absolutely smashed it!

On Friday I had my 3rd session with Ellie, who reacts to dogs when out on a walk. She has slowly but steadily improved since I first met her. This session was all about building confidence in her and her mum, they both did so well and loved meeting Flo. See you soon Ellie! 🩷

✨Structures around your Dogs Neck ✨

Collar V Harness. Always a controversial subject, here’s the reason why I will always prefer a harness for your dog to protect those important structures around your dogs neck. Contrary to believe harnesses do NOT encourage your dog to pull, (always hearing this), lead pulling is often a training issue.

~Muscles:- collar damage can cause contusions, strains, pain, injury to the muscles of the neck

~ Spinal cord & nerves:- collar damage may result in narrowing of the spinal canal,osteoarthritis and herniated discs, can also impinge the nerves causing pain and impaired neurological functions

- Nerves:-The vagus nerve is one of the most important structures of your dog’s nervous system. It originates at the neck level and it controls multiple life-essential organs such as the heart, lungs, stomach and the intestinal tract. Restricting the blood to this nerve may lead to dysfunction in these systems in your dog.

~Arteries & Veins:- collar damage may cause pressure on these blood vessels causing higher blood pressure in the brain and raised intra-ocular pressure, long-term effects may be impaired blood circulation in the brain.
Pulling on the neck increases pressure on the jugular vein. This can cause a build-up of pressure around the brain or can affect the flow of cerebral-spinal fluid, either of which can lead to epilepsy in pre-disposed dogs.

~Larynx & Oesophagus:- collar damage may cause difficulties in swallowing & choking and shortness of breath in your dog.

~Trachea:- collar damage may cause the cartilage rings to flatten or break, resulting in a narrower diameter and thus respiratory problems

-Hyoid apparatus:- a group of bones and cartilages that suspend the tongue and larynx. Trauma to these structures can cause damage and even fractures. (Thankfully very rare).

-Thyroid Gland. In a July 2015 Peter Dobias, DVM, notes the high rate of thyroid disease among large breeds of dogs who often pull strongly when on-leash
The thyroid gland is located in your dog's neck, where it produces thyroid hormones including thyroxine (T4), along with several other important thyroid hormones. When dogs pull, the thyroid gland can become inflamed and attacked/destroyed by the dog’s own immune system. This damage can cause a deficit of thyroid hormone and is termed “hypothyroidism”

-Structures around the eye. Scientists have found that pressure inside the eye was significantly increased when pressure was applied to a dog’s neck from its collar. Increased eye pressure can create additional problems for dogs already suffering from corneas, glaucoma, or eye injuries.

🙏 If you’re pulling the dog along by the collar or your dogs in front pulling you, please, please consider your dogs neck and the damage this can cause to your dog. Please consider a correctly fitted harness.

Next up we've got my girl Dot who got 2 x 2nd place runs on Sunday. Huge well done to Liam who ran her all day, you were fab ⭐️

Dory and Mae-hem ⭐️

Last weekend was Mae-hem's first time competing in grade 1. She's had a challenging time lately with adolescence and wanting to chase anything that moves (including leaves blowing in the wind!) so the fact that she was able to focus around all those distractions was amazing.

Dory came away with a 5th place and some progress points. The biggest challenge for Dory previously has been controlling the urge to say hello to the judges but she managed to work through that this time and had some really nice runs

Gemma, Dory and Mae-hem's mum, has worked so hard with both of these girls in the run up to competition and also on the day, running 2 dogs in the same grade is not easy! Well done Gemma, Dory and Mae-hem! 🏅

It was Lola's first competition this weekend. When she first joined us Lola was very nervous and struggled to work if any other dogs/people were around but her confidence has skyrocketed recently. She took the whole day in her stride, her focus was fab even with all the distractions. She got a very well deserved clear round 🏅 well done Lola!

Proud doesn't even begin to cut it! ❤️
On Sunday we went to a UK Hoopers competition, everyone of my amazing members who entered got at least one rosette each but more importantly each of them had a great day and learnt alot 🏅

We had Daisy, she got a 5th place in her Speedstakes qualifier run (1 fault off of 1st place!) She ran ridiculously fast all day and was a pleasure to watch run 🌼

A couple of photos from one to one training yesterday with Tilly 🩷 I took Flo along to help out. Tilly didn't put a paw wrong, she greeted Flo very politely, we met multiple other dogs (including an off lead dog running over to us 🙄) and had 0 reactions from her. Huge well done to Tillys family for putting in the hard work with her training 👏

Seffy passed her Bronze award yesterday 🩷 her family have put 110% into her training from the day she came home and it really shows. Fantastic work Seffy! 👏

We had a fabulously chilled training class today, all the dogs working on their settle, learning to just do nothing and they all did so well ⭐️
