The theme of this year’s Rabbit Awareness Week is ‘Healthy Diet, Happy Bunnies’, with the aim of highlighting how the lives of pet rabbits can be improved by feeding the correct, balanced diet.

A long-term study at the University of Edinburgh found that muesli-type diets have multiple adverse effects on rabbit health and may play a role in many disease processes. This study explored the impact of four diets (hay only, extruded diet with hay, muesli with hay, and muesli only) on various rabbit health and welfare conditions, through a controlled feeding trial on 32 Dutch rabbits.

We love seeing healthy bunnies so it was great when Biscuit and Doughnut came in for their annual vaccinations earlier today.

Unfortunately we have seen a fatal case of myxomatosis recently in a pet rabbit so please consider preventative measures like vaccination to reduce the risk to your pets from this horrible virus.

New Faces!

For those of you visiting our companion animal surgeries in Settle and Bentham, you might have spotted a couple of new faces on the veterinary team! Marcus Bennett and Peter O’Hagan have joined the practice, increasing the number of full-time companion animal vets to five.

Marcus joined the practice at the beginning of March. He graduated from The Royal Veterinary College in 2014 and initially went into equine practice, spending two years working in a busy hospital in Newmarket. After this he worked in the beautiful Cotswolds where he treated everything from beloved ponies to racehorses. With a new family, he wanted to try something without on-call work so joined a pharmaceutical company where he spent the last four years.

Here he worked to ensure that vets and owners had all the information they needed about the products his company made but Marcus really missed working with animals and their owners. Having moved from the Cotswolds to the glorious Dales, when the opportunity came up to work at Dalehead with the companion animal team it was too good to miss.

Pete joined the practice at the beginning of April, moving from a nearby practice where he was a Clinical Director. Originally from Ayrshire, he qualified from Glasgow University in 2001. He then spent his first few years working in mixed practice and a busy small animal PDSA charity hospital before settling down in the Ribble Valley with his wife, three boys and a small Border Terrier.

Pete gained a Certificate in Small Animal Surgery in 2012 and a Diploma in Business Management in 2023. He is registered as an Advanced Practitioner in Small Animal Surgery and has strong interest in Evidence-Based Veterinary Medicine.

We hope that you will join us in welcoming them both to the practice!

We want to give a special shout out to Lucy's Fern who was an absolute superstar life saver, donating blood to a poorly dog who needed a transfusion yesterday 🤩💫
Fern was super brave throughout and enjoyed several big bowls of treats and food afterwards.🖤

Don't forget now is the time to be checking what stock you have of any ongoing medications for your pet, so you do not run out over the festive season!

Prescription only medication can only be dispensed by one of our vets and we need 24 - 48 hours notice to enable the vet to check your pets records and prescribe the necessary medications.

Your pet will also need to have been seen by the vet within our repeat medication check period and some medication may need to be ordered in specially to fill your animals prescription. So don't delay and be sure you have all you need to last over the festive period. 🎄
