We have had several reports of blowfly strike within our practice area. Now is the time to be on high alert. Managing worm burdens helps to prevent dirty backsides, ‘dagging’ or ‘crutching’ decreases the amount of faecal matter build up which will help reduce the risk of blowfly strike. Hooves which are in good health and are free from footrot or severe scald will also assist in reducing the risk of blowflies becoming attracted and laying eggs.

Summer mastitis is a condition which is usually seen in non-lactating cows and heifers during the summer months. However, the undeveloped udders of young heifers, bulls and bullocks can also be affected.
Speaking to one of the farm vets and discussing the cow’s condition will allow consideration of the best treatment. Stripping out the affected quarters should be done as often as is practically possible but be careful as this will be painful due to the swelling of the teat/gland and kicking is common.
Reducing exposure to flies: Grazing at-risk animals on higher, more exposed pastures away from wooded areas and high hedges will help to reduce the number of flies around the cattle. Synthetic pyrethroid pour-on fly control products will also help to keep flies away from susceptible cattle.
To discuss the various control options, please speak to one of the farm vets.

𝗧𝗶𝗰𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗧𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗕𝗼𝗺𝗯
If you are bitten by a tick and you contract Lyme disease it could seriously harm your health. If not diagnosed and treated quickly, the bacteria can travel around the body. The quicker its identified, diagnosed and treated the better the recovery.

𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗳 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗟𝘆𝗺𝗲 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲
• Wear repellent daily
• Wear long sleeves and trousers
• Do a thorough tick check every night

𝙎𝙮𝙢𝙥𝙩𝙤𝙢𝙨:
• Fatigue
• Muscle and joint pain
• Headaches
• Fever and chills
• Neck stiffness
• Nausea
• Digestive issues
• Bull’s-eye rash, known as erythema migrans (EM). This is diagnostic of Lyme disease but it isn’t always present.

𝙇𝘼𝙏𝙀 𝙎𝙔𝙈𝙋𝙏𝙊𝙈𝙎
• Pain and swelling in the joints (inflammatory arthritis)
• Problems affecting the nervous system – such as peripheral neuropathy, paralysis of facial muscles (Bell’s palsy)
• Cognitive problems such as memory issues, word-finding difficulties and ‘brain fog’
• Headaches and migraines
• Heart problems – such as inflammation of the heart muscle (myocarditis) or the pericardial sac surrounding the heart (pericarditis), heart block and heart failure
• Inflammation of the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord (meningitis) – which can cause a severe headache, stiff neck and increased sensitivity to light
• Disturbed sleep – either too little or too much
• Fatigue and post-exertional malaise
• Dysautonomia – dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system causing issues with heart rate, blood pressure etc
• Vision and hearing problems
• Vertigo and dizziness
• Anxiety and depression

If you spot a tick remove it using either a tick remover or a pair of fine nose tweezers – grab the tick as close to the skin as possible and pull upwards.

Do you:
👍 know your neighbouring sheep farmer?
👍 talk to them regularly and put the world to rights.
👍 natter over the wall or fence top on a crisp spring morning or warm summer's night
👍 tell them when they have a wall down or stock loose.
👍 help each other out in times of need?

We need to get over this shame, stigma and embarrassment associated with sheep scab.

We also need to call it out when we see it and not walk away from known cases - it is not good enough, sheep are suffering and there is no need! We're getting blunt now, get is sorted.

Throughout May our vet techs have visited several farms which have chosen to implement the ‘fire and forget’ service with Bestico.
After an initial veterinary assessment a written report is passed onto the vet techs who then take responsibility for ordering the required insects and equipment to naturally control flies on the farm.
Biomite (Fly egg predators)
Predatory mites targeting fly eggs in any fly breeding during the summer months.

Biofly (Fly larvae predators)
Fly larvae control for tanks, channels, collection pits and lagoons.

Biowasp (Fly pupae parasites)
Fly pupae control for buildings with deep litter, calf pens and hutches, muck heaps.
Bucket Trap (Bucket fly trap)
An innovative bucket trap intended to target the adult life stage of flies around the farm yard. When combined with BESTICO’s fly bait, it is extremely effective at capturing high volumes of adult flies.

For more information about the Bestico fly control range, please contact the surgery.

In February 2023 the Animal Health and Welfare Review was launched. Since that time we have worked alongside our clients to complete what is required in order to claim for the Sustainable Farming Incentive grant.
“It is now easier to apply for the Review. Farmers no longer need to register or be invited to apply. On average, applying now takes less than 2 minutes and it only takes a little over 3 minutes to claim funding once the Review is complete. There are now more than 5,000 agreements and more than 2,500 farmers have completed their Review, and been paid.
The Review is now open to non-BPS claimants who meet the other eligibility criteria. In addition the Annual Health and Welfare Review now also satisfies the veterinary attestation requirements for exporting produce to the EU.”
Going into the summer the Disease eradication and control programmes are going to be introduced in addition to the Animal Health and welfare review. Farmers will be able to apply for financial support to prevent and reduce endemic diseases and conditions, building on the initial advice given in the Review.
https://www.gov.uk/guidance/sfi-annual-health-and-welfare-review
If you would like to take advantage of the Sustainable Farming Incentive Grants, please contact the surgery.

Farmers who keep cattle, sheep and pigs can get funding to pay for a vet to visit their farm and carry out a health and welfare review of their livestock.

The weather was on our side yesterday and we had a great attendance at the Flock Club meeting last night held at Lawkland Hall Farm - it was not suitable siloing or clipping weather but the sun came out just in time ☀️
The only deluge was the discussion around the various topics of the evening. Our sponsors MSD talked us through the process of vaccine manufacture - A case study of the factors that can cause vaccines to fail sent everyone home with fridge thermometers and a promise to collect worm egg count samples before vaccinating and to check the cobalt status of their lambs.
Pete Webster, our host for the evening described the Challenge Sheep Project he has been involved with which the results will be released later this year making an interesting read.
We completed the evening with trailer rides around the farm where Pete explained his philosophy of 'farming with nature' - 'maximising the out put from his grassland' and showed us the projects he is embarking on in the next 18 months.
We all went home with lots to think about.
If you would like to be part of our Flock Club contact the surgery to chat to one of our team.

31/05/2024

You may remember at the end of the summer last year we had a couple of meetings about using insect larvae as a control method to reduce irritant flies. The bucket traps were rolled out and were an instant hit with the effect of hoovering flies from the backs of the cows as they came in from the field.
The one farm that did try the larvae release took advantage of our vet tech service and for less than £300 had the flies under control for the full calving season.
What does control look like? Two strands of fly tape in a fifteen metre calf building were put up as usual, but where a normal year would see 2-300 meters of winding on across the four months the tape was never full enough to justify winding so a reduction of 200 metres of flies in a season? I don’t know how many that is but it’s a dramatic improvement however you measure it.
For 2024 we are offering an assessment visit by a vet who will compose a written report detailing the schedule of releases, the traps required and location of where the traps are to be situated.
Once the schedule is complete and agreed, our team of vets techs will organise the delivery, monitoring and release on farm offering a complete ‘fire and forget’ service taking all the stress out of fly control.
For more information, please contact the surgery and speak to one of the farm vets or vet techs.

We are running our DEFRA approved artificial insemination course for cattle again. The dates are 24th- 27th June.
The course will run over 4 days, with each day split into 2 hours of classroom tuition, followed by 3 hours practical work. The course is run at the Farm Services Building at the Settle surgery site, with lunch and refreshments provided daily.
Numbers are limited as we run the course in small groups to allow a one-to-one approach. This will enable you to learn and gain the skills and confidence to serve your own cows.
For more information or to register an interest please contact us at the surgery on 01729 823538.

The Scops Nematodirus forecast has turned to moderate at Shap & Stoneyhurst which are our two nearest weather stations.
We are seeing lots of cases of Nematodirus scour in lambs at the moment but it is still worth bringing a faecal egg count to the surgery as we are seeing variable levels of Strongyle ' summer worms' and cocci meaning our choice of dosing regime and wormer used can vary. 🪱🪱🪱

New Faces!

For those of you visiting our companion animal surgeries in Settle and Bentham, you might have spotted a couple of new faces on the veterinary team! Marcus Bennett and Peter O’Hagan have joined the practice, increasing the number of full-time companion animal vets to five.

Marcus joined the practice at the beginning of March. He graduated from The Royal Veterinary College in 2014 and initially went into equine practice, spending two years working in a busy hospital in Newmarket. After this he worked in the beautiful Cotswolds where he treated everything from beloved ponies to racehorses. With a new family, he wanted to try something without on-call work so joined a pharmaceutical company where he spent the last four years.

Here he worked to ensure that vets and owners had all the information they needed about the products his company made but Marcus really missed working with animals and their owners. Having moved from the Cotswolds to the glorious Dales, when the opportunity came up to work at Dalehead with the companion animal team it was too good to miss.

Pete joined the practice at the beginning of April, moving from a nearby practice where he was a Clinical Director. Originally from Ayrshire, he qualified from Glasgow University in 2001. He then spent his first few years working in mixed practice and a busy small animal PDSA charity hospital before settling down in the Ribble Valley with his wife, three boys and a small Border Terrier.

Pete gained a Certificate in Small Animal Surgery in 2012 and a Diploma in Business Management in 2023. He is registered as an Advanced Practitioner in Small Animal Surgery and has strong interest in Evidence-Based Veterinary Medicine.

We hope that you will join us in welcoming them both to the practice!
