We are always here if you need us ☺️

British farmers are renowned for the care they provide to their animals.

But of course, they couldn’t do it without an army of farm vets, who help them to keep their livestock in the best possible health.

Farm vets are often called upon to come out at all times of the day and night and in all weathers.

This is a part of farming the general public often don’t see, but it is one that is integral to the food our farmers produce.

So, we just wanted to say a big thank you to all the hard-working farm vets out there.

Our farmers need you – it’s as simple as that!

21/01/2025

From 1st February 2025 Red Tractor are introducing a few updates to it’s standards which will align the assurance scheme with the revised Veterinary Medicine Regulations. Some of the main points to be aware of are:
📍 The use of antibiotics for prophylaxis is prohibited other than in exceptional circumstances.
A vet will need to provide clear rationale, which must be documented, for every prescription of antibiotic for prophylaxis.
📍 Timing of management reviews. The legislation emphasises that management reviews should happen as close to the time of prescription as possible and definitely within 3 months.

The updated Red Tractor Dairy Standards will require specific reference to dry cow therapy in the Health Plan to ensure that dry cow therapy is discussed regularly with farmers, helping to keep strategies for managing dry periods robust while supporting antibiotic stewardship.

Dairy farmers will need to refresh their medicine training course every 5 years.
We will be organising both Milksure and Responsible Use of Medicines courses in the coming months.
For the full new and revised standards for Red Tractor, please visit their website.

Swayback in lambs occurs as a consequence of a severe copper deficiency in ewes during mid to late pregnancy. The breed of sheep and the nature of the feed can have a big influence on the likelihood of copper deficiency.
Suffolks and Texels are very efficient at absorbing copper from the diet and therefore less likely to become copper deficient.
If copper supplementation is required, there are a few options available:
🔵Copper Drench
🔵Copper Capsules
🔵Copper injections
If you are unsure of the copper status of your ewes, and are wondering whether there is a need to supplement the dietary copper, a blood test can help. Sampling six pregnant ewes can give an indication of the copper status of your flock.

FLUKE UPDATE...
We have seen an increase in the number of diagnoses of active liver fluke infection in the last month, either from blood sampling lambs for liver fluke antibodies, liver fluke eggs in dung samples and on post mortem examination of dead animals which have died of acute fluke infection.
To discuss whether you need to test or dose for fluke and which products would be the most appropriate to use please contact the surgery. If you are signed up for the Animal Health and Welfare Pathway for sheep and have completed your initial review, you could carry out the Endemic Disease Follow Up for liver fluke infection and have the laboratory investigation subsidised and a bespoke fluke control plan drawn up for your farm.

THE DALEHEAD CHRISTMAS POEM 🎄🎅🎁

Christmas morning and the farmer jumps out of his bed,
Gets dressed, has a brew, ready to get his stock fed.

First job, the ewes, he fills the racks full of hay,
Whilst his border collie ‘Peg’ has a well-earned play.

Creeping his fat lambs, he listens to the church bells from the village,
Not paying attention to his job, he suffers a bit of spillage.

Heading back to the farm, he gives the quad bike some power,
Trying to stay dry but gets caught in a shower.

Cold and wet, but he struggles through,
Nearly finished his jobs, just the cows left to do.

But whilst smashing the ice in the water trough,
He noticed a l’al calf had a bit of a cough.

But the farmer was prepared, he didn't need to ring the vet,
He’d been r**t organised before Christmas and restocked his drug cabinet.

With a jab of this and a shot of that, finally his jobs were done,
Ready to get back in the house to enjoy some festive fun.

As he sat down at the table and piled his plate with food,
He admired what he’d produced and it put him in a good mood.

At night he reflected about the year he had had,
And said to his wife ’Hell fire-that budget was bad!’

But onwards and upwards as we enter 2025,
Here at Dalehead we’ll support you all, keeping the nation fed and alive.

Merry Christmas Everyone and here’s to a happy healthy and
hopefully wealthy New Year!
