Anyone looking for somewhere to take your little ones for pony ride, highly recommended this charity run pony sanctuary. And after a tough couple of years due to covid restrictions they could really do with some support.

Contact us for riding, school holiday activities, pony care, pony rides and birthday parties. All proceeds go towards the care of the ponies (and donkey!)

Some down time back in the snow to bring back the fun with the girls after the week of frozen taps, ice block haynets, digging paths to get horses turned out, chilblains, numb fingers and toes. But at least all our horses and ponies where warm, cosy and happy munching.

We have lots of exciting events and clinics planned for this year, watch out for more information

Sarah has worked with us through the rough and fine weathers and is a great member of our team, her experience speaks for itself, you could say she's a jack of all trades in the horsey world.

Sarah
"Having worked on a Monday at Holywell for the past 4 years, I now keep my 2 year old mare Isabella at the yard. I also work full-time as a secretary for the Daily Mirror.

Previously I have show jumped as part of the British young rider squad and internationally as a senior, represented the Southern Region at dressage and raced at Goodwood in the 2018 Magnolia Cup.

In the future I hope to be show jumping Bella, but if all else fails, I have my eye on the 2:30 charity race at Ascot!"

"I’ve worked at Holywell for just over 18 months now, and I was lucky enough to have moved my mare Moon to the yard last year. Moon is a 16.2 thoroughbred, and I hope to compete in some combined training competitions with her, potentially some eventing if we are feeling brave! I’m currently studying towards a masters degree in Environment and Sustainability. I love working at the yard, and my horse has truly never been happier!"

"I currently work at Holywell 3 days a week. I have my level 3 in horse care and management, BHS stage 1 and 2 riding and care and BHS riding and road safety which I completed at hadlow college. I have a 6 year old 16.2mare, Nancy who I have owned for about 2 years now. My aims with Nancy is to affiliate her and just get her more experienced in a show environment."

"I’m currently studying at Hadlow College and am on my first year of the Training and Management degree.
I started riding when I was 8 and have been round horses since. I now have my own horse Tarrot who I’ve had for 4 years.
Future goals are to continue with my studies and try out a few low level dressage competitions".

I never realised how much breathing affected my riding and my horses way of going until I worked with Mindful Riding. This is a great post with some tips you can try.

⁣🌟 Top tip Tuesday!!! 🌟⁣
⁣
πŸ’₯ Breathing is key!! πŸ’₯ ⁣
⁣
πŸ’¨ Do you breathe effectively? ⁣
⁣
πŸ’¨ Can you use your diaphragm properly? ⁣
⁣
πŸ’¨ Can you belly breathe? ⁣
⁣
πŸ‘Š This is the first exercise I give all my riders, 20 diaphragmatic breaths before they go to sleep every night.⁣
⁣
πŸ§˜β€β™€οΈ If we practice breathing when we’re in a relaxed position off the horse, then it starts to become easier to do on the horse, and then in more stressful situations such as competitions. ⁣
⁣
🧐 Recent anatomical dissection studies show that the diaphragm and the psoas muscle share some muscle fibres. That means there is a direct link between our diaphragm and one of the most important muscles of our seat, psoas. So if we can’t breathe effectively using our diaphragm we will be tight and tense through our seat, and sitting trot becomes an impossibility. ⁣
⁣
❌ A lot of β€œcore” exercise programmes get people to pull in their stomachs or brace their abdominals. This action blocks the diaphragm from working to it’s full potential πŸ™ˆπŸ™ therefore also blocking psoas. We then learn to breathe apically, overusing the muscles of the neck and shoulders and reducing our oxygen intake. ⁣
⁣
βœ… Learning to breathe effectively using our diaphragm has massive benefits to our mental and physical well being. ⁣
⁣
βœ… Learning to breathe using our diaphragm, the muscle designed for breathing, helps slow our heart rate, reduces stress, improves oxygen uptake, calms the mind and builds resilience.⁣
⁣
βœ… Allowing the diaphragm to function optimally can reduce neck and shoulder pain and allows the psoas muscles to function optimally, improving our position and function in the saddle. Win win! ⁣
⁣
πŸ§˜β€β™€οΈ If you want to learn to breathe more effectively and use your diaphragm better, try this diaphragm reset video I shared just before lockdown:

πŸ’™ Breathe better move better⁣

Well we couldn’t have asked for better weather to get out and enjoy our horses! We are lucky to have some great hacking here at Holywell. A hack to the pub on a sunny weekend seems to be a popular choice πŸ₯°
