๐Ÿพ Tiffinโ€™s Troublesome Walk โ€“ A Cautionary Tail ๐Ÿถ๐ŸŒพ

Say hello to Tiffin, a sweet 4-year-old Cavalier x Cocker Spaniel who came in recently after developing a very sore ear following her walk through long grass. Her owners noticed something wasnโ€™t quite right when she began pawing at her face, shaking her head, and rubbing her ear along the ground. They brought her straight in โ€“ and weโ€™re glad they did!

During her exam, Dr Charlotte used an otoscope to take a closer look and spotted the culprit: a sharp grass seed lodged deep inside her ear canal! ๐Ÿ˜ฑ These tiny but mighty seeds are notorious this time of year โ€“ theyโ€™re sharp, barbed, and designed by nature to travel. Left untreated, they can migrate under the skin and even around the body, causing infections and more serious complications.

Tiffin was admitted, sedated, and the offending seed safely removed. While under sedation, we also found several more hiding in her fur and between her paws. She received a gentle groom while asleep and went home happy, healthy, and grass seed-free. ๐Ÿ•๐Ÿ’š

๐ŸŒฟ Grass Seed Safety Tips:
Grass seeds are more than just a nuisance โ€“ they can cause real harm. After walks, especially through fields or long grass, itโ€™s important to:

โœ… Check your petโ€™s ears, especially floppy-eared breeds
โœ… Inspect between toes and pads
โœ… Look through the fur on legs, armpits, and tail area
โœ… Gently brush through the coat to catch any seeds early
โœ… If your pet shows signs like shaking their head, licking paws, or sudden discomfort โ€“ donโ€™t wait, get them checked

Thanks to Tiffinโ€™s observant owners, she avoided more serious trouble. Keep an eye out this summer, and if youโ€™re ever unsure, weโ€™re just a phone call away โ˜Ž๏ธ

๐Ÿ‘ Great News! ๐Ÿ‘

After 8 days missing cat Shadow has been found! He had hitched a ride in a decorators van and ended up in a whole different suburb. But luckily a lovely lady noticed him visiting her house and took him to the local vets to check his microchip. ๐Ÿฅ

He is now back home with his family and preparing for his big trip to Australia ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡บ in a few weeks time.

We are so pleased this story had a happy ending and are reminded again of just how important microchips are! โค๏ธ

๐Ÿšจ Asking our Elands family to spread the word!!

Little Shadow has been missing for nearly a week now. His family are moving to Australia for good in just a few weeks time and the clock is now ticking to find him in time for him to relocate with them. Understandably they are beside themselves with worry.

If anyone has contacts in the Bromley area please do feel free to share this or contact them if you may have any information. ๐Ÿคž

๐ŸŽ‰ Celebrating 20 Years of Dedication! ๐ŸŽ‰

Today we are celebrating a truly special milestone โ€“ 20 years of incredible service from our amazing Head Nurse, Emma! ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ’š

Over the years, Emmaโ€™s hair colour may have changed more times than we can count ๐Ÿ˜‰, but one thing has always stayed the same: her unwavering dedication, compassion, and commitment to every patient that walks (or waddles, hops, or slithers!) through our doors.

Vet nurses wear many hats โ€“ caregiver, counsellor, anaesthetist, surgical assistant, teacher, and sometimes even magician. Emma wears each and every hat with grace, humour, and heart. Sheโ€™s been a rock for our team and a comforting presence for SO many pet owners.

We are so lucky to have Emma as part of the Elands Vets family. Thank you for everything you do, Emma โ€“ hereโ€™s to 20 amazing years and many many more to come! ๐Ÿฅ‚๐Ÿถ๐Ÿฑ๐Ÿฐ

Planting the Seeds of Passion: Why Work Experience in the Veterinary Industry Matters

We wanted to share with you a card we received this week from our most recent work experience student, and why, at Elands we believe that enabling students to have an opportunity to join us is one of the most important things we can do to support our wonderful industry, because In the quiet moments of a bustling clinic, while sutures are tied or heartbeats are counted, a future vet may be watching with wide eyes and a mind sparked by possibility. This is the quiet magic of work experience in the veterinary world. Itโ€™s not just about shadowing professionals or cleaning kennels. Itโ€™s about igniting a fire that could burn for a lifetime.

With some of the recent bad press itโ€™s difficult to still believe that the veterinary industry is not merely a career path, itโ€™s a calling. A delicate balance of science and empathy, precision and compassion. And yet, many aspiring professionals only glimpse the surface before choosing their future. Work experience peels back that surface, revealing the resilience, camaraderie, and purpose that define a life in animal care.

For students, especially, stepping into a surgery room or a farm field changes everything. They witness the trust placed in a vetโ€™s hands. They see the joy of a puppyโ€™s recovery, the sorrow of difficult decisions, and the strength it takes to carry both. These moments teach them not just skills but values. Responsibility. Communication. Respect. Grit.

And this is why we must actively open doors and create more opportunities. We owe it to the animals we serve, and to the young minds who will one day take our place. Mentorship is the legacy we leave behind. Every placement we offer, every story we share, helps to ensure the veterinary profession remains vibrant and deeply human.

Let us inspire future talent not just by showing what we do, but by showing them why we do it.

Thanks Oscar for your kind words.

๐Ÿพ Keep Your Dog Cool This Summer โ€“ Tips from Elands Vets! ๐Ÿถโ„๏ธ

Itโ€™s another gorgeous weekend, and while we may enjoy the sunshine, our furry friends can overheat quickly. We have shared tips for keeping your cats cool this summer, now itโ€™s the dogs turn!

Here are our Elands top tips to help keep your dog safe and cool:

๐ŸŒŠ Hydration is key!
Always ensure your dog has access to fresh, clean water. You can even add ice cubes to their bowl for an extra cool treat.

๐Ÿก Create shady spots
Provide plenty of shade if your dog is outside. A tree, a parasol, or even a pop-up tent can do wonders.

๐ŸงŠ Fans can be hugely helpful in providing air movement and helping to cool both yourself and your pet.

๐Ÿšซ Avoid midday walks
Walk your dog early in the morning or later in the evening when itโ€™s cooler. Hot pavements can burn paws โ€“ if itโ€™s too hot for your hand, itโ€™s too hot for their feet!

๐ŸงŠ Cool-down tricks
Try a damp towel for them to lie on indoors, a cooling mat, or some frozen treats! Wet down a shaded area of the patio for them to lie on outside.

๐Ÿ’ฆ Paddling pools or large tubs filled with water can be a huge hit!

๐ŸŒ DIY frozen treats? Yes please!
Blend dog-safe ingredients like banana, peanut butter (xylitol-free), plain yogurt, or liver paste โ€“ then freeze in ice cube trays for a fun and tasty cool-down. Watered-down wet dog food can also be frozen into a lick Matt or Kong and is often hugely popular. Treats such as these provide mental stimulation and entertainment without overheating your fur-coated friend on hot days โค๏ธ ๐Ÿฅต

๐Ÿพ Puppy love kind of day at Elands Vet! ๐Ÿพ

We had two adorable pups in today so far, Nova and Cassie came in separately but both were so relaxed they fell asleep right on the exam table ๐Ÿ˜ด๐Ÿ’ค Clearly, theyโ€™re fans of our warm hands, soft mats, and that oh-so-soothing air con! โ„๏ธ

๐Ÿšจโ˜€๏ธ Heatstroke in Pets โ€“ Know the Signs and Act Fast! ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿฑ

Itโ€™s another beautiful but very warm day out there today and on our way in to work we have seen lots of you out for your early morning walks in the cooler part of the day which is great! โ˜€๏ธ ๐Ÿถ

At Elands Vets, we want to help you keep your pets safe during the hot weather. Heatstroke can be a very serious and potentially life-threatening condition that can come on quickly โ€“ especially in dogs and cats during warm days.

โ“ So what do you need to know?

๐Ÿ” What are some of the signs of Heatstroke in Pets:

Excessive panting or drooling
Bright red gums or tongue
Vomiting or diarrhoea
Weakness, lethargy or collapse
Uncoordinated movements
Seizures or unconsciousness in severe cases

๐Ÿšซ What are the most common causes:

Being left in a hot car (even for a few minutes)
Exercising in the heat
Lack of shade or water outdoors
Flat-faced breeds (like Bulldogs, Pugs, or Persians) are especially vulnerable

โœ… What to Do If You Suspect Heatstroke in your pet:

- Move your pet to a cool, shaded area immediately
- Offer small amounts of cool (not cold) water.
- Begin immediate cooling - Wet your pet with plenty of cool water โ€“ tap water at around 15-16 degrees is ideal, especially around the paws, belly, and neck.
- Avoid ice water as this can cause shock.
- Fans can be used alongside water to help in active evaporation and cooling.
- Call us right away โ€“ heatstroke is a medical emergency and rapid treatment is crucial, the team can advise you of emergency steps to be taken while you transport your pet and we can prepare for your arrival at the clinic to ensure rapid treatment can be administered.

๐Ÿ“ž Elands Vets is here to help โ€“ donโ€™t wait if youโ€™re concerned. Early action can save lives. And remember, with heatstroke - prevention is always better than cure. Short walks only in the coolest parts of the day, plenty of freely available water, and keeping your pet cool and calm during the day are the best ways to avoid heatstroke in your pet to begin with.

๐Ÿพ Last week we had the pleasure of meeting Kaya and Klara โ€” two stunning Maine C**n sisters who stole everyone's hearts at Elands Vets! ๐Ÿ’‰๐Ÿฑ

These beautiful girls are Maine C**ns, one of the largest breeds of domestic cat, and they are well known for their super size - Kaya weighed in at an impressive 8kgs! Arenโ€™t they beautiful?!

These gentle giants came in for their vaccinations with Dr Arasi, and while they were both very brave, the sweetest moment was watching them comfort each other through the whole process. ๐Ÿ’• Their bond was truly heartwarming.

Thank you Kaya and Klara for being such wonderful patients โ€” and for reminding us all how special the love between siblings can be! ๐Ÿพโœจ
