Compassion - is the word of the day 💖
Compassion for yourself, 🧘♀️
The fellow dog walker struggling with their dog 🐕🦺
And compassion for your beagle. 🐶
🌳 On the days I’m feeling anxious, I take the girls somewhere quiet and we do a long leash walk.
I can’t handle the anxiety of letting them off. 😟
And if I’m feeling anxious, then they will feel it and it will affect their behaviour negatively.
🌼 Daisy will be more reactive - protecting her and Mumma.
🫑 And Pepper will be wired and hyper - which is her way of handling her own anxiety.
But we also need compassion for our beagles and really all dogs in general. 🐾
We bred all breeds to do certain jobs.
Labradors to retrieve the thing the hunter had brought down. 🦆
The Belgian Malinois, which is the breed in the film “Dog,” was originally bred to herd. 🐑
And Beagles, who are truly a pack animal, were bred to think for themselves and hunt. 🐇
They take very minimal instructions or none at all from the hunter.
🫵 The Labrador and Malinois, on the other hand, were bred to take instructions and obey the hunter or farmer.
When I ask us all to be compassionate, especially for our beagles, remember they weren’t meant to be domesticated. 🏡
They were bred for a job and that was it.
🏹 When we domesticated them, we suddenly didn’t want our beagle to be a hunter.
We wanted them and still do to this day to fit in with our life and do as we ask.
That’s like asking a cat to behave like a dog. 🐱➡️🐶 It is really that extreme.
Yes, with years of domestication, that need to hunt is somewhat lower…
…but take them outside and most will revert to the hunter. 🦌
I was once told by a trainer that you have to break a beagle’s will. 😮
Breaking someone or something’s will is to take away their:
➡️ Confidence 💪
➡️ Determination 🏅
➡️ And to prevent them from having control over themselves. 🚫
How totally arrogant, cruel, and controlling of humans to think this way. 😤
We look at breaking a persons will as not acceptable, so why is it acceptable to break a dog? 🧐
You try and break a beagle, and as most have found coming to see me for help, you get aggression. 🐾😠
Many dogs will meet people with more aggression if you try to break their will. 🐕🗯️
And others will just give up and fall into depression and are a shell of who they should be. 🐚
🌟 I teach you to accept and respect the beagle’s instincts.
I teach you that heel work is only for safety, 🛣️
For crossing roads or walking on pavement/sidewalks near roads.
The rest of the time, we allow our beagles to walk out in front of us. 🐕 🚶♀️
We follow them as much as we can.
😊 We teach them to have this freedom but at a slower pace so we can enjoy the walk also.
When people ask for my help I will teach you NOT to use the traditional obedience training model your local dog trainer is teaching. 🚫🎓
Because we don’t have a genetically engineered breed for obedience. 🧬
And we sure as hell are not going to break their will. 🤬
If you are struggling with your training and it feels like your beagle is just not listening,
Comment “training” below so I can let you know what we can do to turn this around for you. 🔄
90% of beaglers see a change in their relationship with their beagle within 24 hours, just by adjusting how they see their beagle… 🤔
And tweaking a couple of really easy things. 🛠️
My girls are beagles 95% of the time, especially outside on a walk. 🐕🌳
That other 5% is usually where I walk into the lounge and find Pepper on the dining table. 🤨
That I’m not a fan of, so she now knows to get down when I ask the first time!!! 😅
The real truth and fact is beagles are not for everyone.
If you are looking for a dog who just does as it’s told and walks to heel, then a beagle isn’t for you.
❤️ But if you love your beagle more than anything but just don’t know how to train them…
🥰 Then you are just who I love working with.
Happy Friday and Happy Beagling.
