Sol's Ponies is a local family run riding school, located in Shaw, Oldham. With the school being the name sake of Sollia, our riding instructor. Sollia is supported by her mum Angela, who looks after all the paperwork and mans the office. While Edward, Sollia's younger brother maintain's the yard and carry's on improving our facilities. We are lucky to be located at the bottom of the Pennine Moors

, so have some glorious hack's out with picturesque views. If you are looking to get away from it all and let the breeze sooth your mind then definatley book onto one of our pleasure rides. Or may be you are returning to riding after a long break, why not try our 30 minute lessons to refresh those parts of the body we forgot we had. Trust me our 50 minute lessons would certainly remind your of your muscles, so slow it down, take it easy remember slow and steady wins the race. For the little one's there is so much to mention, I wont bore you, instead read on, check us out, see if anything pops out at you. Gentle reminder that February fees are now over due. All regular customers need to pay for the month ahead to ensure your slot is booked fully and completed. We only allow weekly fees for the first 4 weeks once we know your child is comfortable and attending regular we do prefer monthly fees so we can plan staff, lessons and activities ahead. PONY CLUB is one of our longest sessions that we offer for the cheapest price and it has so much value to it …. These sessions are very hard to find places for. They are held on a Saturday and Sunday 10 AM - 12 PM

*Learning what it entails to look after a horse.
* Mucking out
* Feeding
* Grooming
* Tacking up
& a 30 min riding lesson or hack on each session.

All of this is done within a group of no more than 5 children with our wonderful knowledgeable staff and volunteers.

We work towards badges and certificates for all the riders to look back on and be proud of the achievements they have accomplished.

What a very busy day down at Sols Ponies…. Our hard working team have absolutely smashed it ! Here’s a few photos of our first hack of the day. Our horses behaved very well despite some silly drivers. Please always remember to give horses a wide berth and pass slowly. These guys go through consistent road training but they still have feelings & any animal can become uncomfortable in dangerous situations. Luckily our horses behaved very well as always & our riders handled the pressure very well.

Show Jumping Sunday is on the 26th January at Sols Ponies. We are going to do a show jumping lesson 1-2 PM. This is suitable for all riders who can confidently Walk, Trot & Canter on all our horses on site. We will be working over a small course of fences. Things your riding instructor Sol wants you to know:

1. This sport is hard. You don't get to bypass the hard…..every good rider has gone through it. You make progress, then you don't, and then you make progress again. Your riding instructor can coach you through it, but they cannot make it easy.

2. You're going to ride horses you don't want to ride. If you're teachable, you will learn from every horse you ride. Each horse in the stable can teach you if you let them. IF YOU LET THEM. Which leads me to…

3. You MUST be teachable to succeed in this sport. You must be teachable to succeed at anything, but that is another conversation. Being teachable often means going back to basics time and time and time again. If you find basics boring, then your not looking at them as an opportunity to learn. Which brings me to…..

4. This sport is a COMMITMENT. Read that, then read it again. Every sport is a commitment, but in this sport your teammate weighs 1200 lbs and speaks a different language. Good riders don't get good by riding every once in awhile….they improve because they make riding a priority and give themsevles opportunity to practice.

5. EVERY RIDE IS AN OPPORTUNITY. Even the walk ones. Even the hard ones. Every. Single. Ride. Remember when you just wished someone would lead you around on a horse? Find the happiness in just being able to RIDE. If you make every ride about what your AREN'T doing, you take the fun out of the experience for yourself, your horse, and your instructor. Just enjoy the process. Which brings me to...

6. Riding should be fun. It is work. and work isn't always fun.....but if you (or your rider) are consistently choosing other activities or find yourself not looking forward to lessons, it's time to take a break. The horses already know you don't want to be here, and you set yourself up for failure if you are already dreading the lesson before you get here.

7. You'll learn more about horses from the ground than you ever will while riding. That's why ground lessons are important, too. If you're skipping ground lessons (or the part of your lesson that takes place on the ground), you're missing out on the most important parts of the lesson. You spend far more time on the ground with horses than you do in the saddle. (Last time Sol rode was months ago)

8. Ask questions and communicate. If you're wondering why your coach is having you ride a particular horse or do an exercise, ask them. Then listen to their answer and refer to #3 above.

9. We are human beings. We make decisions (some of them life and death ones) every day. We balance learning for students with workloads for horses and carry the bulk of this business on our shoulders. A little courtesy goes a long way.

Of all the sports your child will try through their school years, riding is one of 3 that they may continue regularly as adults (golf and skiing are the others). People who coach riding spend the better part of their free time and much of their disposable income trying to improve their own riding and caring for the horses who help teach your child. They love this sport and teaching others…..but they all have their limits. Not all good riders are good coaches, but all good coaches will tell you that the process to get good is not an easy one.

18th - 19th January we are going to host HALF PRICE taster sessions. After us all being stuck indoors with the snowy weather then we want to get as many riders out as possible having fun on our ponies. These are designed for riders who are 2 years and up. All these sessions are done on a 1-2-1 basis. They are designed to build confidence on and off the horses. They are spent 15 mins grooming & 15 mins riding the horse. All for £6 only !

Our ponies have had a good play in the snow to burn off some excess energy as you can see they absolutely love this weather ! Not practical for us humans looking after them but seeing them play and interact and be just a “normal” horse is something I am very big on advocating. They work hard so they deserve this down time.

Give them a heart if you love to see them play just as much as we do at Sols Ponies ❤️

This year is all about getting our name out there and giving our riders the best opportunities… this year I am going to be offering ridden experience for people off the Sols Ponies site and it will be offered to anyone who shows hard work and determination in their riding lessons or around the yard. It will be given to different riders each time to ensure everyone gets equal opportunities. If your child would be interested in these activities please do discuss with our instructor Sol 🙌

* POLE/JUMPING LESSON * This lesson will be for riders who are red/orange on our colour achievement chart. We aim to do 45 mins ridden with a 15 mins to set up the arena & the horses. We aim to work on creating rhythm and balance going into poles and fences. It is on Sunday 25th August 2-3 PM. Pre booking and payment is required with limited spaces.
