fied through ICOES for canine training and behaviour and I am one of three trainer of trainers for a UK based Scentwork organisation . I’ve competed at 3 x National Police Dog Finals, 6 x Service Dog of the Year Competitions, 8 x Regional Police Dog Trials, 4 x Open Police Dog Competitions and Judged at a variety of open Working Dog trials. I have been a guest speaker at an international dog training conference, I’ve written articles for magazines and authored a dog training column in Barnsley Chronicle. I’m co-owner of one of the largest dog training companies in the UK and during this time I’ve personally trained well over 8000 dogs and their owners helping with a vast array of training and complex behavioural issues. I’ve trained a support dog for a children’s outdoor activities charity in Rotherham and I run loads of dog training and handling demos in support of local charities and events throughout Yorkshire. I’ve also trained and worked dogs for film and TV including; X-Men First Class, Peaky Blinders, Emmerdale, Coronation Street, Prey (series 2) , No Offence, Puppy Love, Scott and Bailey, DCI Banks, an award winning short film called Twine with a Sheffield film company and also trained and handled Toto for The Wizard of Oz at a local theatre.

Meet Juno the tiny Mini Dachshund. Her owners needed some guidance with general puppy behaviours, but were really struggling with her laying and sleeping on her own. During Claires puppy visit she discussed how to help her settle and before long she was fast asleep on the rug, opening her eyes for the photo opportunity :-)

Tiny little Rose was only 9 weeks when Claire went to visit her. Her owners have small children and educating the children is just as important as the adults when you have a puppy. Sadly her owners also lost a previous dog after it was attacked making them especially nervous with their new family addition. Rose is also attending our group classes and we cant wait to see her grow.

Living with family can be difficult if you dont sing off the same hymn sheet. Nugget found himself in this situation so our puppy visit was to educate all the family how to help Nugget negotiate life. His mum is a veterinary nurse so her family help with Nuggets care while she is at work, consistency is key to avoid confusion when sharing our dogs care.

Lilith a beautiful name for a beautiful puppy. Liliths owners had tried using a dog training app for educating her at home but were struggling. Our puppy visits are in person and a great way for us to see how things are set up at home and how the dog is around their own environment.

The cutest Bear . He was only 13 weeks at Claire visit in July. Bear was a very energetic little fellow that needed some guidance with general manners and energy levels. All puppies need rules and boundaries so be careful not to let them get away with too much while they are so cute and cuddly as this behaviour will continue into adulthood.

Cooper is a 11 week old . His owners have had him for only 4 weeks when Claire visited back in July. His owners also have an older dog Oscar aged 11 who is same breed. Oscar is quite nervous and definitely avoids Cooper so we needed to work on their interaction with each other and how this process works to make Oscar feel ok. Integrating a new puppy into a household with dogs already at home can be quite challenging, things need to be in place from the beginning to make sure the changes go as smooth as possible 😀👌🐾

Winnie is a 12 week old lurcher x staffy. Her owner had her about 3 weeks., she was found in a box near a rescue with 4 other puppies. Her owner cant wait to get started with training her to have a new happy fulfilled life. Winnie is also currently training in our puppy classes and is doing fantastic.

One of Claires puppy visits in July was the beautiful Bertie. He loves his yak chews for teething and was very chilled. His owners were struggling with lots of attention seeking which had developed into Bertie barking at them when they try to ignore him.

The lovely Apollo. He was quite a calm chilled puppy during our visit. He was more than happy playing with his own enrichment toys and chewing on them, while we were chatting about his training. Enrichment toys are a fab way for puppies to entertain themselves, use their senses and also to chill and relax whilst relieving some stress. We look forward to seeing Apollo at our Classes from this week

IO the gorgeous . He was adopted by his owners around 5 months old, sadly he was from a puppy farm but his owners didnt have much more information about IO. They were struggling with his excessive nipping and energy levels at home. IO also enrolled in our classes for general training around other dogs and people,

George was asleep for most of Claires puppy visit in June. His owners have never had a dog before just cats and had used google for lots of help but felt lost with all the conflicting information. Google is great for lots of things but can be very confusing for new puppy owners.

Look at those eyes. Like butter wouldn't melt. Milo is a and is six months old. His owners needed help with toileting through the night and chewing things. Milo was a very laid back puppy on our visit, his owners reassured me hes not most of the time 😀🐕🐾

In this video Neil demonstrates how to teach your new dog or puppy that the word “yes” in this instance, predicts the provision of food. This is known as a secondary or conditioned reinforcer or marker. Markers can help you improve you timing when rewarding/reinforcing a behaviour in training. 💡🐾 HELP PREVENT OVER-AROUSAL AND FRUSTRATION 🐾💡 Over arousal and frustration are the two most common contributors to many of the unwanted behaviours displayed by our companion dogs. Providing your dog with breed specific outlets will help reduce arousal and frustration through physical exercise and by fulfilling their genetic drives. So what is an outlet? Well it is different to enrichment. Some people are led to believe they are one and the same but this isn’t the case. Enrichment is when you provide your dog with something nice, fun or relaxing to do, which they undoubtedly enjoy but, it does very little to fulfil their genetic needs. Unless of course your dog was bred to lick peanut butter off a licky mat that is 🤷🏼‍♂️🤣. Outlets are activities that you provide your dog where they not only express natural dog behaviours, but more importantly genetic and breed specific behaviours. This can strengthen your relationship with your dog as you provide the outlets that they need. Your dog will no longer be motivated to find alternative outlets away from you. This can aid your recall reliability and loose lead walking. Here is a video of Kirby and I engaging in an outlet for his hunting dog breeding using a ball. He absolutely loves searching and retrieving. He also enjoys a good old game of tug. If you are wanting to learn to read your dog’s body language so you can predict unwanted behaviours or reactions, the first thing to do is to learn to identify your dog’s “normal” relaxed body language.

If you have a dog who is nervous or fearful of people and you are exposing them to this type of environment to help desensitise them or maybe you are working through a counter conditioning program, remember to be vigilant and be prepared to advocate for your dog. My go to phrase these days is “He’s nervous of everyone so please don’t approach him”. While saying this, try taking a step in front of your dog or even stand up if you are sat down. However, be ready to intervene if they ignore you.
