This is a claim I have seen being made in pet food adverts recently.

Which is shameful because not only do these companies definitely know that isn't true (otherwise they have absolutely nowhere near the knowledge needed to be making meals for our animals), it also means they are willing to market to confuse and concern pet owners and undermine other brands.

'Meat and Animal Derivatives' is an ingredient term that means there is a mixture of animals derived protein sources in your pet's food. All will have passed inspection as being fit for consumption and all will be healthy and nutritious for your pet.

The rules state that a company has to include at least 4% of a named meat, but the rest can be made up of a variety of sources. This is what is is known as a 'variable formula' diet. The balance of proteins may vary batch to batch but the overall nutrition will not. This is not a problem for your pet unless they have a definite sensitivity to a particular protein and you need to ensure you avoid it.

But what the 4% does NOT mean, is that the diet only contains 4% meat overall or that the 'other 96% is grains and fillers' - like another advert that appeared on my feed this week claimed. 😡

If you see marketing or 'pet nutritionists' making this kind of statement, please be reassured that it isn't true, and simply exposes their lack of knowledge and/or their willingness to market without morals.
