"Dogs have zero requirements for carbohydrates. Sadly, it makes up the majority of their most common diets. Dogs actually get everything they require from protein and fat, which can be provided by feeding a fresh, unprocessed diet.
Why do many vets recommend a dry, carbohydrate based diet your dogs? There's almost no veterinary nutrition training in vet school. The education that is provided, comes from kibble company representatives, with commercial bias.
If we take a look back at the historical diets of dogs and their wolf ancestors, it is very evident that they are facultative carnivores. Their teeth, gut and digestive physiology strongly support this. Dogs have hinged, powerful jaws along with canines and triangular shaped carnassial teeth for ripping and tearing flesh and crushing bones.
Unlike humans, dogs can't produce the enzyme amylase in their saliva that helps to break down starch.
However, they do produce a very small amount from the pancreas which means they are capable of digesting
I 'small' amounts like grasses, seeds and plant matter (these can all be found in the wild prey's gut, which they would have hunted down and eaten). Due to the lack of amylase, digesting processed food; loaded with carbohydrates puts huge pressure on the digestive system. This can lead to many health issues such as;
- Obesity
- Diabetes
- Cancer
It makes sense to feed a fresh, unprocessed species appropriate diet that mimics what they evolved to eat"

Including seasonal vegetables (leaty greens are best) superfoods, and berries can be a great way to add a nutritional boost to the bowl. For dogs that are overweight, you can use more water-based, low-calorie vegetable such as cucumber or courgette.
When hunting and foraging for food in the wild, dogs do not attempt to meet all of their nutritional requirements in one meal, or even during one day. As long as you balance their food over time, they will be getting the range of nutrition required. Don't just stick to one type of protein. - (Unless limited by allergies).
Offering your dog a single protein everyday, such as chicken may be easy for you, but can become quite boring for them. It also doesn't provide them with a great range of nutritional balance. Variety is the spice of life!
