Hello, Smile Cattery family. I hope all of our little furry friends are keeping well? And you of course! đč
I just wanted to give a little advice regarding this crazy hot weather and what we're doing here at Smile and what the vets and Inspector has advised.
Over the last 3 weeks we have had some cats being sick, on and off random days. Just watery sicks, no bile and rarely food. Only 1 cat gave us cause for concern, Charley. He had some blood in his sick on a few occasions over 3 days. We let his mom know and she checked with her vets. He is only a year old, bright as a button, as naughty as ever with his little 4 month sibling. The vet advised that there was no cause for concern. She suggested he had been sick because of the heat, but as he was a bright, normal functioning boy there was nothing to worry about. She said he probably wretched too hard and burst a little blood vessel. She also added if there was no blood in his p*e or poo that it wasn't a concern and just keep an eye on him. It was good advise. After his mom, and us, had recovered from the shock he bounced back for the rest of his holiday with us.
A lot of our cats haven't been eating too well and not drinking so much either which has been a concern for us. It's a little bit like us I guess. They've also slept a lot more than normal. After checking with our vets and the Inspector they gave us a couple of suggestions which we were already doing.
We have those little cool mats, which strangely work!? We've been adding a little water to their wet food to help their water intake. They have lightweight blankets over their bed areas, and they have been not too bad even when the sun has come round. We've taken all the Igloos and nest type beds out and are only using the cooler plastic beds with a little base blanket in. (Unless asked otherwise or beds have been brought in to use, which is fine). We've had the front and back doors open, corridor doors locked don't worry, and a couple of fans to help circulate the air.
A couple of our regular visitors eg Dotty a have had check ups with their vets afterwards, they're all fine now. It's just the heat. Dehydration can be dangerous particularly in the older or not so well cats. If you're not sure please do check with their vets. We keep records here of what they have eaten and their p*es and poos twice a day which if you need please do ask.
Finally I'm looking into other foods, such as soups, broths or anything else that is nutritious but with more liquid to see if that helps a little.
That's about all at the moment, for those of you that have cats that are currently staying with us, or due to come and stay, please be reassured that we are doing everything we can and keeping a close eye on them. They are all very loved by us and we like it to be home from home so do everything you would do if they were at home. If you have any worries or concerns before, during, after their stays just be in touch. đ»
