As many of you know in September, we began our fostering journey ( again ) not animals this time but our Millie , she absolutely loves all the Waggytails animals and has been learning how to care for dogs , cats , rabbits , guinea pigs and all small furry creatures . One on the best ideas was for Millie to have a kitten , of her own , we were a little wary as we have 3 other cats in the house , but we needn’t of been concerned, Shilling our white cat has taken to Ace really well , they spend lots of times together , however Shilling now thinks he’s mum ! Little furries can bring lots of love and healing in our lives .

Here’s some do’s and Don’t;
🐰bond rabbits in tiny cramped space - this creates a fearful environment in which buns are ‘forced’ to interact.
🐰bond rabbits in a bath, it is slippery and can cause injuries to occur - not to mention being stressful for the buns.
🐰use spray bottle to stop certain behaviours - this is terrifying for the rabbits.
🐰take them on a car journey to induce a stressful environment that forces them to interact and form a ‘bond’.
🐰use loud noises to cause stress and force an interaction.
🐇These practices are UNETHICAL and not in the welfare interest of your buns🐇

🐰Rabbits are sensitive animals, prone to stress which can quickly make them ill.

🐰”Being transported to a strange place, being placed into an alien environment and being given no time to adjust can be extremely stressful for rabbits.”

🐰”This can lead to aggression, risking injury and, even if rabbits do appear to be ‘getting along’, we may not be getting a true picture of whether they are compatible -what you are seeing maybe tolerance, as a means of trying to handle their stress…..🥺”

😭”There are also techniques which use fear to force rabbits into bonding as self-preservation. This is known as “stress bonding” and it involves putting rabbits into a very small confined space where they cannot escape one another, and/or exposing them to a frightening experience such a taking them on a rough car journey, running a vacuum cleaner next to them or placing the carrier on top of a spinning washing machine or even spraying them with water!”

NB: running a hoover to deliberately frighten rabbits into interacting with one another in a bonding pen is unethical! We all have bunnies who may not be bothered by the hoover. The discussion here with regards to deliberately inducing fear - by whatever means.

🐰 “These techniques can be incredibly harmful and do not encourage true friendship between bunnies, rather it creates a learned helplessness where they become shut-down through fear.”

🐰”Some rabbits that have been put through stressful bonding techniques in the past may struggle to bond with buns in the future.”
🐰Some guardians have reported a break down of bonds after stress bonding techniques have been used to ‘bond’ their rabbits.

❤️🌟NB: Some rabbits who were compatible to begin with, will bond and stay bonded through stress techniques…. But why put them through it?

❤️🌟Lots of rescues advocate ETHICAL BONDING that focuses on HOW the bond was created and not just the end result. ❤️🌟

🐰”Avoid anyone who claims they can wave a magic wand and guarantee your rabbits can be bonded within a specific and short timescale (often people may say ‘within two weeks’).”

🐰🐰”Rabbit bonding done properly can take a great deal of time and patience, but the rewards at the end are happy, healthy pets who enjoy the company of their friends.” (RSPCA)

🐰🐰 We will always encourage and support you to bond youselves at home, as it is part of being s bunny guardian. You need to equipped for tackling any tiffs, bond breaks and importantly how to transition bonded buns to their forever home.

There are many rescues who safely and successfully bond rabbits, if you feel you can’t do this yourself;
Whether we 24/7 bond or date bond - putting our rabbits’ welfare needs first is important. The RSPCA and RWAF advocate the support slow date bonding method - others in the rabbit rescue community 24/7 method. It can be a divisive subject, but it doesn’t need to be. I personally date bond until bonding behaviours change to acceptable then build up to 24/7 , it is so important to watch /supervise until the bond become stable , each bond varies from rabbit to rabbit as like us not one size fits all , bonding can be quick but also take a slower pace , we go at their pace not ours , we are constantly conscious of their needs, we aren’t customer led we are bunny led watching their body language, there are certain healthly behaviours to look for . I also heavily supervise and support for the first 48 hours or until behaviours stabilise . We are registered with several vets , we don’t expect you to come and take them unless that’s what you want to do , if a vet is needed . I have a good level of basic first aid if needed , however because we supervise we rarely need a vet .
I am not a professional bonder , I am experienced over 50 years , I learnt the techniques I use today from my dad who used this during the Second World War because his hutches were required for other purposes during that time . Info copied
