South Yorkshire English Springer Spaniel Rescue

South Yorkshire English Springer Spaniel Rescue SYESSR - Registered Charity Number 1068811 Last year we helped 107 dogs find a new family. We also provide support to a number of dogs on our foster scheme.
(33)

We aim to care for and re-home as many un-wanted, stray or neglected Springer Spaniels as we can as well as proving advice and support to current owners. Despite our title we willingly help other types of Spaniels plus cover a much larger geographical area and will not base decisions solely on the location of either a dog needing our assistance or a possible home for one of our current dogs. As we

ll as strays dogs come to us for reasons such as;

the "present" is too much trouble
a new baby arriving
their owners splitting up
they are too old to work
their owners working pattern changes
they have a behavioral problem
their owners move house or emigrate
they are found as a stray. or even a new puppy arrives (so the oldie has to go!)

There are many other reasons, too numerous to list but whatever the reason, we care for them and try and find them a suitable new home as soon as possible. Although this is a costly scheme we are very proud of it and it is something that not many rescues have. Dogs which are elderly or have a medical condition are often difficult to find homes for as people are worried about the financial commitment that may be needed. As part of our foster scheme these dogs will be found a permanent home but we will continue to provide financial assistance towards veterinary costs. We currently have around 30 dogs which are part of this scheme, which as you can imagine is a large drain on our funds. SYESSR believe that all Springers deserve to be given every chance to live their full life regardless of their age or disability. Only on veterinary advice and when quality of life is poor is euthanasia considered. This ethos is a costly one and means extra income has to be found to support these dogs.

As autumn arrives our thoughts are turning once again to Christmas and our very popular calendars.
This year we are very lucky to have a fantastic professional photographer providing us with top quality images.
The very talented and award winning Caro Dell has supported our rescue for many years and photographed a lot of our spaniels.
We are really looking forward to sharing the amazing images.
However...we also LOVE the photos that you send us. So we would like to include a collage of images from you our lovely supporters!
All you need to do is share a photo on this post and we will try to include as many as we can.

As with most households, rescues and businesses we are subject to increasing costs.
To help us to continue the work we do we are looking to increase our fundraising activities to ensure we have the appropriate level of funds to give the dogs we help the best of care.
So we are looking to you our wonderful supporters to help us identify possible events that we can attend.
We are looking more at larger events than small galas. We actually love the small events but we need to prioritise our time and resources.
Please could you get in touch if you know of events local to South Yorkshire or close by.
Thank you

Toby is one of our long term residents meaning we haven't managed to find the right home so far. He's quite a character and not always easy but he is great to walk and today we had a walk to the lake for a dip, mainly because he rolled in horse poo but also because he enjoys it.
We hope that one day Toby finds his special someone but until he does we will continue to make sure he enjoys his life

CHESNUT (NOW CHESTER) FINALLY FINDS HIS PEOPLE

Chester was originally rehomed by us when he was around 18 months old. He was in that home for around 5 years before being returned to us for behaviour issues ( aggression )
We found him to be a really lovely boy, happy to mix with other dogs, great off lead, good on it and absolutely no signs of aggression at all. We briefly rehomed him once more and he quickly came back for aggressive behaviour. Again we saw no such aggression.
He was then with us a further year poor boy before we had another enquiry about him.
I'm pleased to say that he has been on his new home now for a month and is doing brilliantly.
Dogs need to be allowed time to adjust in new homes and his new people have done just that.
We thank everyone that gives a rescue dog a home but special thanks go to those that take on a dog that needs just that little bit more

Saturday stars - SYESSR rescues. At SYESSR we are volunteers and we spend a lot of time between us raising money, administration of applications, walking and looking after the rescues in kennels - what happens when they leave us ? This is Charlie one of our own which came into rescue in 2019 - not looking good when he came in, but he loves life to the full now with us and is totally spoilt - living the life he deserves. It would be lovely for us to see what our rescues are up to, it would be great to see your photos 😁

Why is dog weight important? It's good to keep a check on your dogs weight and shape. Keeping your pet at a healthy weight lowers their risk of certain health problems like arthritis, diabetes, high blood pressure, breathing problems, back problems, kidney disease, and some forms of cancer. It also can reduce your pet's risk of joint injuries associated with excess weight. Look at the chart to check if your dog is in the healthy category

UPDATE: The interest we have received regarding Jack has been huge, we have had a lot of applications and also a lot of offers of help from experienced owners and trainers, even his original owner has been in touch. As we said in original post we have no previous experience of a deaf & blind puppy so this help is invaluable, it has also made us realise that at this stage we don't really have a good enough knowledge of Jack to know what would make a good home for him the only thing we do know is that he doesn't like change so when he moves it needs to be forever. So after much pouring over applications and discussions with trainers and the people currently caring for him it has been decided that for now he will stay where he is. This will enable the correct style of training to be introduced and hopefully this will help build his confidence with other dogs and situations. The results of this will also give us a better understanding of the sort of home that would suit him. We will therefore for the time being not be accepting any further applications for Jack.

We are looking for a very very special home for Jack.

Poor Jack was born both deaf and blind so for him life is quite different. He found himself in a rescue after his owners circumstances changed and from there was rehomed into a home with multiple dogs (very multiple), unfortunalty although he is good with dogs on a one to one basis the number of dogs in the house is too much for him and it is not right for him or the other dogs in the house (as a number of them are having to be kept separate). As moving Jack from one place to another is stressful for him he will be staying where he is until a quieter home can be found for him, he is currently near to Mablethorpe and any meetings would need to take place there.

If we are honest a deaf blind puppy is not something we have any experience of but we can imagine it is not going to be an easy task to take him on but it also sounds like he is a very loveable chap who will make the work rewarding. We will of course provide any support we can along with contacts for people from blind/deaf dog networks who will be able to provide advice and information too. We are also in the process of getting hime specialist vet checks to ensure we have all the necessary information about his condition.

His current carers say his sense of smell is incredible and he can follow their scent around they house and garden, if he gets losts he barks to tell them to come and find him. They say he is quick to learn and a very playful, loving puppy who likes to be outdoors but loves cuddles on the sofa too, he is housetrained and loves his snuffle and licky mats. They think the perfect home for Jack would be a quiet home with someone who is around most of the time. A home that has one or two maybe calm bi***es who could help give him confidence and help him adjust to his new life, he is still a playful pup too though so any other dog would need to be tolerant too. In order to give him the best chance we would be looking for a home without children, not becasue we think he wouldn't be good with them but because it is one less thing for him to worry about. A reasonable sized garden on one level would also make life much easier for him.

You may have experience of a dog that has lost its hearing/eyesight due to age, this will be a completely different experience. At just 10 month old Jack is a very lively boy with all the usual fun and games that come with a Spaniel puppy, he will need training in all areas of life all of which will be made more difficult by the fact that he can't see or hear you. Jack does need a new home but it needs to be the right home, he has had three changes so far (4 if you include the breeders) so the next move really needs to be his last. If after careful consideration you do feel that you could give him the home he needs please start the process by completing one of our application forms.

Today we had a lovely adventure at the seaside. We took 3 of our longer term rescue dogs to Fraisthorpe and we had a lovely day.
Buddy, Toby and Chestnut travelled really well and quietly only getting excited once they realised where we were.
They had the best time frolicking in the sea and running on the sand.
We also stopped at a café and they were impeccably behaved
If you follow us regularly you will know that Buddy has a tumour in his stomach and we are at the stage where we are just keeping him comfortable.
Let me tell you that no one has told Buddy he is poorly. He gave today his all.
Obviously the human escorts had to have a detour to Mr Moos for ice-cream

This absolutely adorable bonded pair of cockerpoos are still waiting for their forever home together. They are a pleasure to walk and are good off lead. They are used to older children, at the moment they spend most of their day mixing with dogs at the kennels and are very good with them. We all love our dogs, they are all so much more intelligent than we give them credit for, especially when food is involved. One of our own rescues - Charlie - poor lad has had 2 cruciate ligament repairs in 7 months, this for even a quiet springer like him has been a difficult time, he has had lick mats, snuffle mat, kongs - what does everyone else use to keep their dogs minds active - we'd love to see photos of your gorgeous ones using their mental stimulation toys

Chestnut the Sprollie (6 years old) is pleasure to walk and is very good off lead, he’s an energetic dog who loves to play. He’s a clever lad, when the treats are out, he’s at the front of the queue, and before you know he sneaks round the other end for another one. We think a quieter home with no children or visiting children, this would be more suited to him, as in his last home visiting dogs started to affect his behaviour which lead him to bite one of his owners. We have had no trouble at all whilst he’s been in kennels with other dogs and kennel staff and walkers. To see more about this handsome boy, please click on the link in the comments
