Having a "healthy" Horse put to sleep

Making the decision to have a horse put to sleep is one of the most difficult and yet selfless decisions that you could ever make.

This decision is made somewhat easier if the horse is elderly or seriously ill/injured but what about those horses that are unrideable or lame?

Selling or loaning a horse as a companion may be an option if you're lucky enough to find a good home. However, far too many horses/ponies end up in the wrong hands and a horse that is dangerous under saddle could end up being sold on as a ridden horse.

We have seen many unrideable and lame horses that have been starved, drugged and beaten just to be sold to an unsuspecting buyer.

With financial uncertainty on the horizon there's a chance many horses will be looking for new homes and sadly in some circumstances the first of those to go will be the horses that are elderly or the lame.

Unless you are willing to guarantee a home for life for a horse that is retired, sometimes the kindest action is taking responsibility and having them put to sleep.

Some people may judge you or have an opinion but welfare must come first!

Don't make your responsibility someone else's problem...
