Sarah and her family joined us as foster carers last year, originally intending to foster rabbits, they soon fell in love with dogs! As with all our fosters, they have been an invaluable support to the work we do here at the Blue Cross and are a shining example of how rewarding fostering can be for families with young children!

โ€œI had a dream that we were fostering rabbits, so looked for a local rescue to support. We liked the vibe of the Blue Cross, saw that you could foster rabbits, so signed up to foster! We met Helen (Foster Coordinator), and the staff were warm hearted, kind and very friendly.
No rabbits were available for us to foster so we took on some guinea pigs. We enjoyed learning and caring for them and we appreciated the care and support the Blue Cross gave us throughout. So, we decided to try fostering dogs!
We really liked the Blue Crossโ€™s approach, and I feel itโ€™s important for children to be around animals to learn about caring for different kinds of living creatures. Itโ€™s an important opportunityโ€ - Sarah

Sarah, her partner and two children have been amazing fosters and while they had intended to foster for much longer, but they fell head over heels in love with one of the puppies they were fostering. They are taking some time out to settle their pup, Pixie, in and will be returning to foster with us again in future!

Interested in signing up to foster? We are always in need of extra help, be it in fostering small pets like hamsters and guinea pigs, or larger pets like cats and dogs! To find out more, or to apply, check out our website here:

We love a good before and after! How amazing does Max look after his visit to the Blingy Dogs dog groomer?

Elizabeth very kindly donated two hours of her time to get Max scrubbed up and looking fantastic to help him get adopted. She did an amazing job, and Max was feeling so much better afterward! His foster carer rewarded him with a trip to the seaside where he had a wonderful time.

7-year-old Max, who is a lovely and social Shih Tzu, is hopeful that with his smart new look he'll find a loving home in no time!

Do you live in Sheffield? Have you ever thought about volunteering and want to find out more about the opportunities near you?

Come and meet us, and 20 other organisations, at the VAS Volunteering Fair this Tuesday 18th June from 10am - 2pm at The Circle, 33 Rockingham Lane, Sheffield, S1 4FW.

We would be unable to function without the amazing and committed support of our volunteers, and we are always in need of extra hands to help with things like animal transport runs, fostering, assisting in our food bank or simply helping us keep on top of the various DIY projects we have around the centre.

So pop on down and have a chat with us, we look forward to seeing you there!

Poor Thomas needs your help! ๐Ÿ˜น

Thomas is a very anxious kitty who spent most of his life in a bedroom, separated from another cat. Because of this, he has developed some anxiety and some behavioural issues as a result of being under-socialised. ๐Ÿ’”

This beautiful boy is making incredible progress in his foster home and is looking for a patient female owner who will respect his need for limited interactions.

Thomas is fun, inquisitive, and playful, but we need to find him the right home so he can learn to trust.

Please share this post in the hope that it will help us find him the home he needs.

Cat Microchipping Event At Blue Cross Sheffield: 23rd June 2024

As of the start of this week, the 10th June 2024, it became compulsory for all pet cats in England to be microchipped. For cat owners or keepers (the person who the cat normally resides with) this means that:

- Any owned cat (over the age of 20 weeks) must have been microchipped with the owner's contact details registered on a compliant database by this date.

- If you are found to not have your cat microchipped by this date, you will have 21 days to comply, and non-compliance may lead to a fine of up to ยฃ500.

While the law was announced in March 2023, giving cat owners over a year to microchip their cats, we are still encountering countless cats without chips. This is due to many reasons, with a big one being the cost of living crisis!

To help cat owners across Sheffield, we are holding a Cat Microchipping Event on the 23rd June between 10am โ€“ 4pm (by appointment) for just a ยฃ10 donation! No consult fee or additional costs involved.

You can book your cat(s) in by emailing us on [email protected]

The neutering deadline for exempted XL bullies who were one or older on 31st January 2024 is fast approaching. โš ๏ธ

If your XL bully has not been neutered by the deadline and confirmation isnโ€™t received by Defra, your dog will no longer be exempt and could be seized by the police. ๐Ÿ˜ข

You only have a few weeks left, so we strongly advise you not to delay, as it could pose a significant risk.

Purchased as a child's birthday present, gerbils Cheese and Pickle found themselves in our care unwanted and unloved. At just eight months old, they had already experienced such a lot of change. ๐Ÿ’”

This , we thought it was the perfect chance to tell you their story. Gerbils are fascinating pets but if you have young children and want them to be able to handle their pet, it might be better to consider another small animal. They're naturally quick and agile and don't usually enjoy being handled, so younger children can find it difficult to hold them without squeezing too hard.

Thankfully, Cheese and Pickle waited patiently and after a while went off to a new home where they would be cherished. ๐Ÿง€

When some people think of greyhounds, they often conjure up images of super-fast, competitive dogs speeding off in pursuit of a small fluffy animal.

Contrary to popular opinion, greyhounds do not need excessive exercise. They even tend to be a little lazy and many sleep as much as 16 to 18 hours a day! No better way to spend National Greyhound Day if you ask us!

Are you looking for an adorable addition to your family? Look no further, for we have fifteen perfect little kittens looking for new homes!

They are all such adorable bundles of joy, and in coming up for 8 weeks old, they are ready to steal your heart and head off to their new families! As is typical of their age, they are very curious little creatures, full of energy as they explore every nook and cranny of their surroundings. They are all very playful kittens who enjoy batting around toys. They are very interactive and so much fun to be around.

But, as adorable as they are, they are still very young and are still learning about the world. They will need families who will give them the patience to build up their positive experiences around new things and environments as they grow!

Do you think that you could be the one to give one, or maybe two, of these kittens their forever home? Or maybe one of our adult cats that are patiently awaiting new homes?

You can find all the details, and apply, on our website here:

URGENT HOME NEEDED

You may remember that a couple of weeks ago we posted about the gorgeous (if very unlucky), Lucky. A beautiful senior staffy in need of a loving home.

Despite your help in sharing her story far and wide, and some truly wonderful people applying to adopt, we have been unsuccessful in finding her the right home. Sadly, we are now days away from having to put her into kennels and we really don't want to do this as it will cause her a lot of distress.

Weโ€™re hoping by sharing her story once more, there may be someone out there that can offer this sweetheart a homeโ€ฆ

Lucky was the loyal companion of her homeless dad for 11 years before being abandoned at our London Victoria Hospital. We do not have all the details as to why, after all this time, he felt he could no longer look after herโ€ฆbut she was, and still is, devastated to have been parted from him.

Sadly, she did not cope well in kennels. She was a lost soul, and after years of living on the streets and roaming freely with her dad, it was a shock to the system to have been restricted to kennel life.

The hospital put out an urgent plea to all the Blue Cross branches for emergency foster space and we couldnโ€™t turn our backs to her. She arrived in our care the next day.

Lucky went into foster with one of our amazing foster families, with two young children, and has brilliant with them from day dot. What she wasnโ€™t so brilliant with though, was adjusting to home life.
Having never had stability in her life, in and out of hostels and living on the streets with her dad, being in a home environment was overwhelming and Lucky took several days to settle. Pacing around the house constantly, whining and barking, searching for her dad and not knowing what to do with herself.

We were genuinely concerned for her welfare, and whether, at her age, she would be able to make the transitionโ€ฆbut she has now really found her feet and is doing amazingly! She still needs to get the hang of being left for periods of time, but she is showing steady improvement every day.

Sadly, Luckyโ€™s foster family is due to go on holiday, and weโ€™re down to the wire. We thought for sure weโ€™d be able to find this darling girl a home before they went away, but weโ€™ve not been able to find the perfect fit.

We have no other foster availability to move her, neither do any of our other branches. Putting her back into kennels was something we really didnโ€™t want to do, but weโ€™ve run out of time and optionsโ€ฆunless we can find a home for her in the next couple of days!

Lucky is looking for a quiet home as the only pet where she will be able to settle, have stability, receive all the love she is missing from her dad and rest her tired, old bones.

She doesnโ€™t want much. She enjoys the simple pleasures in life, slow walks through the park and playing with her toys, and most importantly, human companionship as she continues into her golden years.

Lucky will require ongoing medication for her arthritis and is currently on anti-anxiety medication to help with all the change. This will need to be continued in the new home until she is fully transitioned and settled. Lucky is a social and affectionate dog and is very passive and respectful with other dogs on walks but would prefer to be the only dog in the home.

If you think you could be the one to give Lucky her forever home, please apply via our website here:

https://www.bluecross.org.uk/pet/lucky-1159455

Or, if you cannot commit to having a dog long term, you can help Lucky and many other dogs like her by signing up to be a pet foster carer.

Is there anything better than showing a rescue dog what love is? ๐Ÿ’™

Poor May was abandoned on a busy roundabout and was in grave danger. If it hadn't been for a passing motorcyclist, she would have probably stepped into the path of a car. ๐Ÿ’”

In a sad state, with her tail illegally docked, we believe May was abandoned due to a costly hernia.

Kennels are no place for a lone puppy, so May was placed with a foster carer, where she received all the love and support she needed to recover. And now, this brave girl is thriving with a new family. ๐Ÿฅฐ

A big thank you to everyone who has opened their home and heart to a rescue dog like May.

Share the love you have for them below!

A typical day for our Jess includes finding a sunny spot to sleep in, a play with her toys and then a cuddle on your lap for some fuss. It's not much to ask for is it?

Jessica is looking for a quiet home as the only pet with access to a secure garden away from busy roads and loud noises. What's not to love about this sweet kitty? ๐Ÿ‘‰ https://bit.ly/4dGitvG

17/05/2024

We think we can all agree that 8-year-old Runa is an absolute stunner, but this incredibly sweet little lady is looking for a new home.

Runaโ€™s owner contacted us with a heavy heart when she realised, due to unforeseen circumstances, that she was no longer to give Runa the life she deserved.

After many years of living in a house with access outdoors, Runaโ€™s life changed dramatically when her owner had to move into a city centre flat where she was then confined to an indoor lifestyle, surrounded by the noise, hustle and bustle of city living. This had a big impact on her wellbeing, and despite her owner trying everything she could think of to help her, and so she came to the heart-breaking decision to find her a new home.

This has been an incredibly difficult decision for Runaโ€™s mum, as she loves her with all her heart, but she wants her to be happy and have the life she deserves...and that is one that is filled with all the simple pleasures; naps, sunbathing, fusses and watching the world go by, ideally as the only pet in the home.

An extremely affectionate, and loving cat, Runa is looking for a peaceful home away from any major roads where she can relax, feel secure, and have access outside to roam around at her leisure.

If youโ€™re interested in giving Runa a loving home, you can apply through our website here:

Coming to us at just 8 months old following a life-changing injury, Bandit had no idea what the future held for him. โค

Having had his left eye removed at a partner rescue, he spent almost six months in our care, receiving all the love and attention needed to regain his confidence. Once ready, he was rehomed as an equine therapy pony at a local childrenโ€™s home for youngsters with emotional and behavioural difficulties.

Bandit was chosen because he had a difficult background and the home felt it would resonate with the young people. Banditโ€™s story shows just how we can be different but still adaptable when facing challenges. Watch his story in full ๐Ÿ‘‰ https://bit.ly/4bvIZ8S

Pets have an incredible impact on our lives. This is Lee and Inari's story.

Lee has experienced more grief and health struggles in the past 15 years than most people should in a lifetime. ๐Ÿ’”

Sadly, the devastating sequence of events plunged him into a downward spiral of depression and anxiety.

But adopting Inari pulled him out of a dark place, where she continues to be a constant source of comfort and motivation for Lee, who is learning how to walk again after a rare auto-immune disease left him hospitalised for three months and bed-bound.

We're so happy they found each other. We thank Lee for allowing us to share his story and highlight the positive impact of our beloved pets. ๐Ÿ’™

Are you staying home this Summer? Why not consider short-term fostering?

The school summer holidays are fast approaching and what better way to spend the six weeks than fostering pets in need as a family? You can have enjoy days out with a canine companion, to truly make the most of the long days, or relax in the company of a purring feline in your lap while you read a good book!

Or, if youโ€™re still working while the kids are off, fostering smalls like rabbits, guinea pigs and hamsters is still a great way to help! They don't mind doing their own thing while you're at work.

Fostering is a brilliant way to teach children about responsible pet ownership by having them help with their care, and also a way to enjoy the companionship of a pet without the long-term commitment!

Donโ€™t worry though, all the costs are covered including travel expenses for taking your foster pets to the vet! All necessary equipment and food will be provided, as well as extensive and ongoing training and support. All we ask is that you love and care for them as if they were your own!

Interested? You can give us a call on 0300 777 1851 for more information, or to apply, you can check out our website here:
