๐ฐ Did you know that nearly 40% of all pet rabbits are obese? ๐ฐ
๐ฐ Bunnies that are overweight are far more likely to develop health problems, especially as they get older. These complications can include:
๐Heart disease as, in overweight bunnies, the heart has to work much harder and so problems may develop.
๐ Liver problems as fat deposits may start to build up and prevent the liver from working properly.
๐ Arthritis as extra weight means more pressure on the joints, which can cause the joints to deteriorate and become sore more quickly.
๐ Skin problems which can involve urinary scald and difficulty grooming properly.
๐ Fly strike as overweight bunnies will struggle to keep their bottoms clean, and the faeces and urine that build up will attract flies who will lay their eggs in your bunnyโs skin folds. The maggots that hatch from these eggs will eat away at the tissue around you rabbitโs bottom which is not only very painful (especially if the tissue becomes infected) but can also be fatal for your bunny.
๐ฐ These problems can all be extremely serious, and some of them can even be fatal. And by keeping your bunny slim and trim, you will really reduce the chance of them becoming poorly with one of these horrible illnesses ๐ฐ
๐ฐIf you think that your rabbit could be overweight please contact the practice to have a chat with one of our nurses about the safest way for your rabbit to diet ๐ฐ

๐ถ Meet Pedro ๐ถ
๐พ Pedro stayed with us for the day to have some X-rays of his legs ๐พ
๐ฅฐ He was such a good boy during his stay. He gave cuddles and kisses to all the nurses ๐ฅฐ
๐ฉป Unfortunately his X-rays showed he had a problem with his hip and he will have to undergo surgery to help with his pain ๐ฉป
๐ฅ We will keep you updated on his progress ๐ฅ

๐ The ideal weight isnโt the same for every cat because each one is an individual and it depends on their age and breed. A scale, known as a body condition score or BCS, is often used by veterinary clinic staff, and you can use it at home too. Take a look at our slightly simplified version below.
Reach out to us if you think your cat might be above an ideal body condition score, they can help support you and provide nutritional advice. โ

๐พ The pads on a catโs paw, or their โtoe beansโ as they have become affectionately known across the internet, are tightly packed full of nerve endings that collect and send messages to their brain about what they are touching.
The extremely sensitive pads act as shock absorbers when a cat jumps down from a high surface, they help with hunting and playing with toys (or swiping your cup off the table!). A catโs pads can even pick up vibrations from things like footsteps, which can help them cope with hearing loss. Their pads can also play a vital role in communication with other cats, as the glands here produce pheromones.
You can train your cat to become more comfortable with having their paws touched for situations like veterinary examinations. But because their paw pads are so sensitive, it can be an uncomfortable surprise for a cat to have their toes touched unexpectedly. So, even though it may be tempting to touch the toe beans, we need to respect where our cats do and do not like to be petted. ๐

๐ฅฐ We love it when our fur friend send us cards with their happy and fun playtimes on ๐ฅฐ
๐พ We only get to see the majority of our patients when they are poorly, so we have a large notice board in our prep area that we put cards on. This means even on the harder days we can look at all the patients we have treated and smile ๐พ
โค๏ธ Meet Issac, he sent us this amazing card and he also brought us some wonderful tasty snack (amazing choice Isaac, our favourites) โค๏ธ

๐ฉโ๐ Would you want an unqualified veterinary nurse looking after your sick pet? Currently, the 'veterinary nurse' title is not protected in the UK so anyone can refer to themselves as one - even if they have no formal education or training. At Vets4Pets our nurses are fully trained, registered veterinary nurses because we know that the relevant education & training is vital in helping to save pets lives ๐ฉโ๐

During May, Veterinary Nurse Awareness Month (VNAM) provides a focused opportunity to reflect on how veterinary nurses shape the high levels of clinical care practices provide and the many different roles and responsibilities they have.
We would like to thank our amazing nursing team whom we appreciate whole heartedly for all that they do๐
๐ If you have any stories of where our nurses have helped your pets we would love to hear them ๐

๐พ Every year during May, the veterinary profession celebrates Veterinary Nursing Awareness Month (VNAM), proudly spearheaded by the British Veterinary Nursing Association (BVNA). In 2024, BVNA is celebrating 20 years of campaigning during May, to raise awareness of veterinary nursing ๐พ
๐ฐ Veterinary nurses are at the heart of veterinary practices, providing vital care to our pets and support to veterinary surgeons ๐ฐ
๐ฅฐ Throughout this month weโll be posting some pics of our wonderful team of nurses and weโd love it if you could share some love with them too ๐ฅฐ

Osteoarthritis pain can be a serious health problem for your cat. And cats hide almost everything, especially pain. You know your catโs playful ways and what they love better than anyone. Changes in these behaviours could be signs of osteoarthritis pain. Just as in humans, chronic pain negatively impacts your catโs quality of life, not just physically, but also emotionally. Osteoarthritis pain can affect cats of any age, and it has been seen in more than 60% of cats that are 6 years or older. If left untreated, the pain can become worse over time.
As your vet, we rely on you to report changes in your catโs behaviour for more accurate diagnosis. If it is found that your cat is showing signs of OA-related pain, helping your cat begins by booking an appointment with the vet. The good news is that by identifying your catโs condition, you and your vet can develop an appropriate treatment plan for your cat.

๐บ Itchy pet season is upon us! ๐บ
๐ฟ With the weather warmer, pollen counts getting higher and more pets active outside, running on the grass and rummaging around flower beds, they are more susceptible to situations that cause itchy, sensitive skin ๐ฟ
๐ Nutracoat has been developed by vets using a unique formula of key natural ingredients to aid healthy skin and a glossy coat, whilst soothing dry, flaky skin and reducing itching and scratching ๐

๐ถ Beautiful Abbie ๐ถ
๐พ Abbie came to us as she had injured her leg. She needed surgery to repair her cruciate ligament in her knee. She brought her rabbit with her to cuddle during her recovery. What a brave little girl she was. ๐พ
๐ฉนAbbie will be coming back to see us for her post op checks. She will need to stay nice and calm at home to enable her leg to heal ๐ฉน

๐พ Meet Penny ๐พ
Penny is being fostered by our vet Laura. She came in as she needed a lump removing from her front leg. After the procedure she didnโt want to wear a cone so we had to get her a T-shirt to cover the wound. ๐Sweet girl by name, Sweet girl by nature ๐ Penny was such a good girl for us and had lots of cuddles during her time with us.

Beautiful Bella has lost two kilograms on a weight loss journey with Wakefield Vets4Pets โ and owner Hayley says she's much more active, playful and affectionate as a result. "She just seems generally less grumpy as well โ she probably felt how we do when we've overindulged!"
When Bella came in for her booster vaccination a year ago the team noted that she was overweight and would need to slim down to help her live a long and happy life. Since then the three-year-old house cat has been put on a special diet and she's now lost a third of her weight. Hayley said: "We're incredibly grateful to the team at Vets for Pets. They've given us some great advice and tips to keep the weight down. They are so approachable and we've never felt judged by them."
Head veterinary nurse Jess said: "Bella has been on her weight loss journey for over a year now and she's seen once a month for basically Waggy Weightwatchers as we call it. The owners have stuck with the plan very well and took note of everything we have told them, which is great. A 2kg loss is quite a substantial loss for a cat, so she's done really well."

Ten-month-old Filemon is on the mend after he fell behind a wardrobe and fractured one of his front legs in three places.
He was taken to the specialist orthopaedic team at Vets4Pets Cross Hands in Llanelli by his owners Kasia and Andrzej where he had surgery to repair the bone with implants. The main recovery barriers for Filemon were possible nerve damage, and keeping him quiet long enough to give his bone and wound time to heal โ which veterinary nurse Rebecca says is no easy task for a cat owner. She said: "Thankfully, with the help of his diligent owner and plenty of the right medication, Filemon is recovering well and has full range of motion in his leg."
Kasia said: "We'd like to say a massive thank you to the Vets for Pets team for doing an amazing job to get Filemon back on his four legs! After surgery Filemon was in a crate for six weeks which wasn't easy for him being such a young and playful kitten. It's now been two months since the surgery and he's recovering really well. He's enjoying himself again just like before the accident."

Meet Jimmy, thanks to his microchip, he was reunited with his family after 2 years!
In 2021, Jimmy was suspected to be involved in a road traffic accident in which his owners were told he didn't make it. After straying for 2 years, a member of the public brought him into Doncaster Vets4Pets where our team scanned him for a microchip. After a quick call to his owners, our team were able to reunite him with his owners. We do love a happy ending๐

Storm visited Preston Capitol Vets4Pets after she got a stick stuck up her nose on a walk. The team used an otoscope to help find the stick inside her nasal passage. After using general anaesthetic, they used forceps to pull our the stick that was tightly wedged. After the removal, Storm was back to her usual happy self ๐
