Vets Now, (an out of hours / emergency provider) are issuing a summer warning to dog owners after a study revealed that French and English Bulldogs make up over a third of emergency heatstroke cases.

The interesting study by Vet Compass reviewed 167,751 dogs they have treated at Vets Now and identified 384 heatstroke cases, showing Newfoundlands are over 15 times more likely to suffer heatstroke than Labradors. ☀️🐶

Flat-faced breeds, including French Bulldogs and Pugs, are also at higher risk.

It's crucial for dog owners to be vigilant, especially with vulnerable breeds.

Recognising critical signs like heavy panting, restlessness and agitation, red (or even blue tinged) gums and tongue, drooling and a fast heart rate, is an essential responsibility we all share.

To keep pets safe:
✅ Restrict exercise on hot days
✅ Provide plenty of cool water and shade
✅ Never leave dogs in parked cars

If heatstroke is suspected, contact your vet immediately.

UPDATE
Thank you everyone. His owners have been found💕

This beautiful older boy arrived with us over night.
He has pain relief on board and is warm and stable for now but we will need to do some further diagnostics, to know the full extent of his injuries.
He was found near the main road past Wookey and has a microchip but it’s sadly not registered.
Please share and help us find his owner - thank you

Does anyone recognise this lovely girl? She was brought in this afternoon to have her chip checked as she has been hanging around a property in Cherhill. We located a chip but unfortunately it's not registered to anyone. If you think she maybe yours please do get in touch. She's being very well looked after. 😻 Please call 01249 812715.

From today in England, all owned cats must be microchipped by the age of 20 weeks. The chip details must be registered on a compliant database in the name of the cat's keeper and those details must be kept up to date. Failure to comply means that the keeper is reducing the chances of being reunited with their pet if should be lost or stolen.

If there is a breach, an enforcer may serve a 21 day Notice and, if that is ignored, the keeper will then become liable to a prosecution where on conviction the fine can be up to £500. In common with the dog microchipping regulations, this is about the benefits of compliance rather than the detriment of enforcement.

An enforcer is unable to issue a Fixed Penalty Notice.

The deadline (10th June) is fast approaching for it to become a legal requirement for all pet cats to be microchipped and their details kept up to date on a database.
