Happy New Year from Paddy in New Zealand🇳🇿
Whilst visiting on holiday, Paddy has met with Nathan who worked at Shepton in 2010.
"Nathan now runs a 7 vet independent dairy practice on the Canterbury plains. It’s mid summer and 14C so beanies are useful. Lots of maize damaged by hail! While all farms are block calving, there are many similarities with the UK. High performance farms use collars and good management to get good fertility and more milk."
Nathan has been lucky enough to be gifted one of our prestigious Shepton Vets Mugs from Paddy.☕

A routine Herd Health Plan review uncovered higher-than-target antibiotic use, driven by pneumonia in calves. With no obvious risk factors, we dug deeper using Animal Health and Welfare Pathway (AHWP) funding – and uncovered hidden BVD exposure in the herd.

From targeted blood testing to a successful PI hunt, this investigation highlights how AHWP funding can support better herd health, reduced antibiotic use, and real progress towards BVD control and future eradication.

What bug is causing high cell count cows in your herd?🦠
Mya has been out sampling, using the California Mastitis Test to determine the problem quarter. She then took sterile samples for bacteriology. We can use your milk records to identify cows for testing so all you need to do is sort the cows at milking and we do the rest.🐮
