➡️👅 Swipe to see!

Lovely Lexi visited our team to have her nails clipped. She was so well behaved, we thought she deserved a treat. She did make us laugh! We think she enjoyed it, do you?

If your cat is spending more time outdoors enjoying the spring sunshine, these tips are for you!

We all worry about our cats when they aren’t in the safety of our homes. Allowing them to venture outside to exercise natural behaviours is part of being a cat owner for many of us.

To give your pet the best chance of staying safe outside, here are our top tips!

🐱Microchipping: This is a legal requirement for cats and should they get lost, it's the best chance of being reunited. If your cat isn’t microchipped, book in with our team today!

🐱Preventative healthcare: Just being outside, your pet will be exposed to parasites and infectious diseases, so ensuring they are up to date with regular preventative healthcare is key (check out our Pet Health Plan, where we tailor your pet's treatment to their lifestyle: https://www.newtonclarkevet.com/our-plans/

🐱Restrict their space if necessary: Allowing cats outside, but maybe only in the garden (think cat-proof fences or a cat-friendly enclosure), will reduce the risk of accidents or injury.

🐱Cat flap: A cat flap allows them the freedom to come and go as they choose - they’ll often instinctively know when it’s safe to venture outdoors. You may also want to consider a microchip-activated cat flap, to ensure it’s only your cat who can venture indoors!

🐱Neutering: Unneutered male cats are more likely to roam in search of a mate and are more likely to get into fights. Spaying your female cat also means there won’t be unwanted or unplanned pregnancies (remember, female cats are fertile from around 4 months of age, so they can have a litter of kittens when still a kitten herself).

Meet the sweetest little guy, Kevin 🐀

Kevin visited our team this week to be castrated. It was so lovely to have a lesser-seen pet in our practice. Swipe to see his little face and hands! Kevin can now join his new group of rat friends at home.

We loved caring for him, and he enjoyed a morning full of snuggles with our nursing team. He even had a nap in our nurse, Megan's, jumper 🥰

With Easter around the corner, here are our top hazards to be aware of to keep your pet safe:

🍫Toxic foods: Chocolate Easter eggs (chocolate contains theobromine, which is toxic to pets), and hot cross buns (containing sultanas and raisins, which are also toxic to pets) are popular this time of year.

🌷Flowers & plants: The list of poisonous plants and flowers is very long and often difficult to avoid. Be vigilant around all bulb plants, lilies and tulips, which are the most common perpetrators, and avoid having known poisonous plants in your home to be extra safe.

🥚New life: If you’re walking your dog in the countryside, be extra vigilant around ewes who may be pregnant or newly born lambs. Please keep your pets on a lead until ewes and lambs are out of harm's way. Even your presence near them could be enough to cause stress.

🥕Roast dinner: With lots of leftovers from our Easter dinner, be mindful that indulging in fatty meat and a range of new vegetables can cause upset stomachs, ranging from bloating, sickness, diarrhoea to pancreatitis.

⚠️Toxic chemicals: If you’re spending time in the garden this Easter, we recommend not using any slug pellets or fertilisers to ensure your garden is pet safe.

Above all, enjoy being able to get outside with your furry friends - it was a long winter!

Did you know we offer laparoscopic surgery?

Most commonly, we use this for bitch spays.

Laparoscopic surgery is a minimally invasive technique that uses a small camera and fine surgical instruments inserted through very small incisions. This avoids the need to make large incisions, which:

🩺Take longer to heal, requiring significantly more recovery time
🩺Means your pet is at a higher infection and complication risk
🩺Are more painful and cause more discomfort for your pet, which can be avoided

If you’d like to learn more about laparoscopic surgery or discuss whether it’s the right option for your pet, please contact one of our team today.

We’re thrilled to bring this technology to our practice and offer a safer, more comfortable experience for your pets. You can also read more about the wider procedures we use laparoscopy for on our website.

Meet the beautiful, Winnie ❤️

Winnie visited our team for a routine spay procedure, and her owners chose for this to be done laparoscopically. This is a less painful, less invasive alternative to traditional spaying! You can read more about this option here: https://www.newtonclarkevet.com/surgical-services/

This technique (also known as keyhole) uses a small camera and fine surgical instruments inserted through very small incisions. For a bouncy and energetic breed like the lovely Winnie, it means that she benefited from:
✅ Faster recovery time
✅ Less pain
✅ Reduced risk of complications
✅ A quicker return to exercise

💚 Here is Winnie post-spay, having her toilet break outside. As you can see, she was up on her feet very quickly and comfortable enough to have an explore around our gardens. She was the happiest and friendliest girl. We can't wait to see her for her post-op check and dish out a few more ear scratches!

Parasites can cause a variety of skin conditions in pets, which can result in some very uncomfortable outcomes from redness, swelling, inflamed skin to hair loss.

This month, we look at those common parasites we more routinely treat with preventative medications, and the signs that some further investigation may be needed.

Our clients leave us reviews daily, and we are so grateful!

When other pet owners are searching for a vet, Google is often the first place they go to look. Reading other pet owner experiences is the ideal way for them to find out who to trust with their pets, it also helps us to understand where we could improve.

So to those that take the time out of their day to leave a review, thank you!

This little cutie is Gizmo ♥️

Gizmo is an eight-week-old Staffordshire Bull Terrier puppy, and he came in to see Amaia for his first vaccinations with great support from his Labrador brothers, Alfie & Sherman!

He was so adorable and brave, our team were completely smitten with him. You can see why, can't you? 💕

Did you know that the majority of adult cats are lactose intolerant?

We often assume that cats and milk go together, but actually, whilst many enjoy milk due to the fat content, many are unable to break down the lactose. This can go on to ferment in their large intestine causing a wide range of symptoms:
🥛 Diarrhoea
🥛 A gurgling tummy
🥛 A bloated tummy
🥛 A dirty bottom
🥛 Excessively cleaning their bottom
🥛 Lethargy

While offering a saucer of milk seems like a traditional treat, fresh, clean water that’s constantly available is all they need to stay happy and healthy, and avoid tummy troubles. Believe us, they’ll thank you for it!

Meet Richard! 🥰

We had the pleasure of looking after this adorable 3-month-old boy when he came in to be castrated. He settled into his kennel well, then had a cannula placed to receive his general anaesthetic.

As you can see from his post-surgery pictures, he recovered really well, all snuggled in his blanket when he first woke up, before munching on some broccoli once he was fully recovered 🥦

We're sure you'll all join us in wishing gorgeous Richard a good continued recovery back home! 💕

My rabbit is eating it’s own poo, should I be concerned?!

No! This is completely normal and, in a rabbit's world, eaten for good reason!

Rabbits need a lot of fibre to stay healthy. Without it, they are susceptible to life-threatening conditions such as gut stasis (where the movement of food through the digestive tract significantly slows or stops).

When a rabbit eats, during the first journey through the digestive tract they can’t extract all the essential nutrients they need. You may notice their first dropping is sticky and soft. Rabbits will eat these droppings for a second go at extracting all the vital nutrients, and the resulting ‘poo’ is round and hard.

This is why fibre is so vitally important for our bunnies! Good quality hay and greens will help keep things moving and your bunny happy and healthy.

02/04/2025
