🩺 It’s Diabetes Week!
Diabetes is a relatively well-known condition in humans, but it also affects our pets and if not treated, can be fatal.
❓ Do you know the signs to look out for in cats and dogs?
Diabetes tends to be more common in pets who are overweight and approaching their senior years. Certain breeds are also more predisposed, so knowing the signs will be even more important (Dogs: Samoyed, Cairn and Tibetan terriers. Cats: Burmese).
Diabetes is caused by insufficient production of insulin (a hormone which controls blood glucose levels). The body is unable to use the excess glucose so instead burns fat and protein for fuel, which in the long term can lead to organ failure.
☎️ If you have any concerns that your pet may be showing these signs, get in touch with our team today.
💙 Remember, if your pet is diagnosed with diabetes, we are here to support you and ensure you can manage the condition at home so that your pet can live their life to the fullest!

It's Veterinary Nurse Awareness Month 🩺
Every year during May, the veterinary profession celebrates Veterinary Nursing Awareness Month (VNAM), proudly spearheaded by the BVNA (British Veterinary Nursing Association).
This year, we celebrate 20 years of VNAM and the campaign theme is ‘Progression’ – intending to highlight the diverse range of skills, abilities and career pathways of veterinary nurses.
Our nurses are an integral part of our team and are vital to the smooth running of our practice.
We are incredibly proud of all our nurses, many of whom are likely familiar faces, and this month, we celebrate them! Here they are in action doing what they do best....🙌

Many dogs eat grass and for some pet owners, it can be quite concerning (as if we rarely feed them!).
So, why do dogs eat grass? Well, there are several theories:
🐾 Possibly an inherited behaviour designed to starve intestinal parasites of nutrition
🐾 An enjoyable behaviour to curb boredom, especially when the new grass is short and sweet
🐾 For dogs who lack fibre in their diet, some will eat to ‘bulk’ up their diet naturally
🐾 Some may even ingest grass to help with digestive issues, dampening stomach acid to help vomit bile
It is most likely a combination of all the above but unless your pet is eating excessively, there shouldn't be a cause for concern. The best thing we can do as pet owners is reduce the risk of parasitic infections through regular worming treatment. Visit our website to find out more - and consider our pet health plans, so that your pet’s preventative healthcare is taken care of!

These unpleasant pests are most prevalent in the UK during spring & summer and are primarily found in grass and woodland areas.
Ticks are external parasites that feed off the blood of animals and humans. They pose a concern as they carry harmful bacteria that can cause disease and serious illness. Ticks will bite and feed on your pet for up to a few days, dropping off once they've had enough.
If your pet does have a tick, it must be removed correctly. Leaving part of the tick in or squeezing its body during removal can release infected blood back into your pet. Get in touch if you need some help from our team.
Our pet health plan covers all your pet’s preventative care and it’s delivered straight to your door! Visit our website to sign up online and ensure that your pet is tick-safe as we move through the seasons.

Many pet rabbits love spring. The weather is warmer, there is more time outdoors and more time exploring their natural habitats.
As bunny owners, there are a few common hazards we need to be aware of to ensure that they are kept safe.
🦟 Flystrike: Flies lay their eggs on rabbit fur, which hatch into maggots. They burrow into the skin, and feast on their flesh. This can happen in a matter of hours. Ensure your bunnies’ hutch is kept clean, to avoid attracting more flies which will already be prominent as the weather warms. Also, check your bunny’s skin daily as flystrike can be fatal. Our vets can recommend preventative products which may help.
🍀 Grass cuttings: Grass begins to ferment once cut, which if consumed, continues to ferment in tummies! To avoid an upset digestive tract ensure they have access to fresh grass and good-quality hay.
⚠️ Chemicals: As we spend more time in the garden, we may find ourselves using common gardening products, such as weed killers, pesticides or fertilisers to name only a few. They are highly toxic to pets so ensure your bunny isn’t exposed.
🌹 Flowers: All bulb-grown plants are toxic to rabbits, but there is also a long list of commonly occurring flowers such as buttercups and poppies, so be mindful of where your rabbit is exploring.

❤️ What is heart disease in dogs? ❤️
Heart disease is an umbrella term for many types of heart problems. Mitral valve disease, dilated cardiomyopathy, and arrhythmias are some of the most common types of heart disease - sound scary?
It need not be! Whilst hearing your pet may have a heart condition is concerning, many types of heart disease can be well controlled with medication, regular monitoring, and lifestyle adjustments.
We perform many cardiac investigations in-house but for those pets who maybe are diagnosed with a more complex case, Heart Vets visit our Yeovil Surgery on a routine basis, providing a specialist service for your pets in the comfort of familiar surroundings.
If you notice any of these symptoms, get in touch with our team.

Building update! 🏘️
Our brand-new purpose-built premises is really beginning to take shape! It has been a very busy few months whilst building work commenced, and we are thrilled to show you our progress so far.
The land was cleared, the foundations were laid, and slowly but surely our building has grown! Whilst we will look back at our time at our Sherborne practice fondly, this relocation to our brand new practice is a wonderful reminder of how our proudly independent veterinary practice has flourished over the years. As we continue to push the boundaries with the standard of care we are able to provide your pets, this new home will not only support us in size, but also in facilities.
We will keep you updated on our progress as we work towards our opening in summer, 2024.

We want you to have a ‘Merry Little Christmas’! To ensure our pets enjoy it as much as we do, here are our top Christmas considerations for a carefree day.
🎄 Provide a safe space: Christmas often means more visitors and noise, which can be overwhelming for some pets. So in the lead-up to the big day, ensure your pet has a familiar safe space they can retreat to for some quiet time.
🎄 Christmas treats: Christmas often leads to a rise in cases of pancreatitis, often caused by richer foods. Be mindful of how much food and what your pet is consuming (think pigs in blankets, mixing meat and goose fat roasties!). Of course, also be careful of those toxic foods which may be lying around whilst you are preoccupied with gifts - chocolate, sultanas in mince pies, blue cheeses and macadamia nuts are common culprits!
🎄 Bones: Many pet owners give their dogs bones as a Christmas treat, but these commonly splinter and cause blockages. So, ensure no meat bones are left lying around for your dog to indulge!
🎄 Keep a routine: Christmas is one day of the year where most routines go out the window! For your pet, they will appreciate some stability, whether that's the same feeding times or a long walk to tire them out.
🎄 Festive outfits: Some pets wear their festive outfit with pride, but for others, this can cause a lot of distress. So whilst a festive bandana may be fine for one dog, a Christmas jumper or antlers with bells, may not be welcomed on another.

November is pet diabetes month, so we are taking this opportunity to tell you all about this relatively common but potentially fatal condition!
Like humans, any pet can get diabetes mellitus and it is more common in overweight and older pets, although some are more predisposed. Diabetes is caused by an insufficient production of insulin which controls blood glucose levels. The body is unable to use this excess glucose so instead burns fat and protein for fuel, which in the long term can lead to organ failure.
What are the signs in dogs & cats?
🐾 Excessive thirst and urination
🐾 Weight loss
🐾 Increased hunger
🐾 Blindness / eye issues
🐾 Weakness and lethargy
🐾 Poor skin condition (such as, excessive dandruff or dry coat)
If you have any concerns that your pet may be showing these signs, get in touch with our team today. If your pet is diagnosed with diabetes, we are here to support you and ensure you are able to manage the condition at home.

Arthritis, just as it is for humans, can be a slow, painful and debilitating condition. Sadly, it’s very common in our four-legged friends and symptoms seemingly become worse in the cold weather.
Make an appointment with our team who can assess your pet and advise on the variety of treatments available, including:
🐾 Medications: to help reduce swelling and pain
Joint supplements: to help manage existing damage and prevent further deterioration
🐾 Alternative therapies: There are many effective alternative therapies available (many of which are included by most insurance companies) from hydrotherapy to laser therapy which can reduce inflammation and help treat painful joints
🐾 Home alterations: Anti-slip mats, ramps, raised food and water bowls, orthopaedic beds, extra warmth and extra padding in their sleeping area will all help ease any mobility difficulties and discomfort
🐾 Routine alterations: Whilst your pet may be finding their daily exercise a little more challenging, for their wellbeing, they may still like to go out! Consider wrapping them up warm in a coat, avoiding walking in the rain and keeping exercise steady, short and at their pace.
Your pets will thank you.
