📣We are looking for a Veterinary Surgeon (maternity cover with a view to becoming permanent) to join our team!📣

We are small animal veterinary surgeons and have two branches 5 miles apart. We have a spacious, recently converted surgery in Yeovil and a new, recently opened purpose-built surgery in the beautiful market town of Sherborne.

We are looking for an experienced vet to initially cover maternity leave but ultimately to grow our team.

Full-time employment consists of:

> A 4-day week with a designated day off, plus 1 in 10 Saturdays (9am-2pm) and Sundays (9am-12pm).
> There is no out-of-hours with this role, we outsource our OOH to a designated 24hr provider.
> We encourage CPD and offer a generous budget – we currently have 3 vets with certificates in multiple disciplines and a further 3 enrolled on certificates.
> Our financial package includes a salary of £45-65k dependent on experience with a holiday allowance of 28 days annual leave. We also offer full Private Medical Insurance and a BHSF Cash Plan Scheme to all of our team.

We are proudly independent and will remain so. If you would like to be part of our exciting journey and be appreciated, please contact [email protected] to discuss this opportunity in more detail.

If your cat still likes to explore the outdoors during the winter, which most will, here are the top 4 hazards and our tips to keep them safe!

🌡️Temperature: As the temperatures drop, particularly overnight, cats often seek warmth in unusual places. Wheel arches of cars, under bonnets and in unfamiliar sheds or garages are common favourites! Ensure your cat always has access to a warm safe space and in extreme weather, consider keeping vulnerable cats inside. You can also change their feeding times to encourage them home earlier.

⚠️Antifreeze: Highly toxic to cats, and easily accessible when seeking warmth in garages. Cats are often attracted to the sweet taste. Ensure any spills are cleaned up and remember, the same chemicals are also used in screen wash and car radiators.

🚓 Road traffic accidents: With shorter daylight hours, cats often find themselves outside in the dark. Sadly at this time of year, the number of cats involved in RTAs soars! Cats become startled by headlamps so, if possible, ensure your cat is home by the time it gets dark and consider putting on a glow-in-the-dark collar to help drivers see them.

🌹Toxic plants: There are many seasonal plants which are toxic to pets, many of which, we use to decorate our homes. Be mindful of where your cat has access if you choose to use mistletoe, holly, ivy, poinsettia or pinecones to decorate. It’s not just a Christmas hazard!

During the winter months, there are some everyday and common dangers to be aware of. Here are our top considerations for pet owners as we arrive in the depths of a UK winter.

🐕 Salt and grit: It can irritate our pet’s paws, rendering them dry, cracked or even causing abrasions. So if you have been on a walk be sure to check them and maybe rinse away any debris. This can also prevent your pet from potentially ingesting the toxic contents when later cleaning their paws.

❄️ Beware of snowballs! Whilst snow down south is a rarity, if you are somewhere with snow, be mindful that they can cause hard little ice balls between paw pads which can be uncomfortable if their fur isn’t trimmed.

⚠️ Anti-freeze and de-icer: A convenience and luxury, but it is highly toxic to our pets, so keep it out of reach and thoroughly wash away spills. If you think your pet may have ingested some, get in touch immediately as it can be fatal.

🌡️ Cold: If possible, bring pets indoors during cold or poor weather (including small furries). If you are unable to, ensure they have plenty of warm bedding, cover hutches if possible to stem draughts (but leave a small gap for air to circulate) and check regularly that their water hasn’t frozen. During walks, you may like to consider a coat for vulnerable pets (elderly, arthritic, poorly, young or short fur pets).

🚶‍♀️Keep moving: It’s very tempting to snuggle up on the sofa during the chilly winter days, but our pets still need exercise and stimulation. So even if their walks are shorter, be sure they stay active with playtime.

| Deceased cat |

Sadly, we have had a deceased cat brought into our Yeovil practice. She is female, black and white in colour, long-haired and wearing a green collar with a bell. She is microchipped but we have been unable to contact the owner.

If you think she may belong to you, please contact our practice directly.

Clive really enjoyed his breakfast yesterday 🥰

So much so, that most of it ended up down his front! He visited our team for a routine castration procedure. He is a Maine C**n cat and lived up to his breed name, sporting his beautiful lion's mane!

Our team thoroughly enjoyed caring for him. Get well soon, Clive 🐱 🦁

Frostbite and hypothermia are often confused as they are closely linked, being caused by the cold.

Vulnerable pets are most at risk in both cases i.e.
- Elderly
- Young
- Unwell
- Thin coated

However, the most common cause is prolonged periods in the cold, especially when they are wet.

Whilst it is not that common for a pet to suffer from hypothermia or frostbite in the UK as our temperatures rarely drop low enough for it to be a commonality, it can happen.

The best way of protecting your pet from both is never leaving them outside in bad weather.

Meet gorgeous Biscuit ♥️

Poor Biscuit was feeling a bit under the weather, so he stayed with us for further investigations. Antonia cared for and monitored him throughout the day, and of course, he got lots of extra cuddles and TLC from our nursing team!

We're pleased to report he's now feeling a lot better 🥰

It’s Walk Your Dog Month! This annual observance is to highlight the importance of regular exercise and outdoor activity for dogs.

As well as improving physical health, it can also strengthen their bonds with us as their owners, help them to sleep better, and also provide an outlet for natural instinctive behaviour, in turn, improving overall well-being.

If you’d like an excuse to get out walking with your pet, here are some ideas you may like to try:

🐕Try a new walking route to explore the scenery and keep your dog engaged with new scents.

🐕Use it to socialise both your pet and you. Maybe invite a friend along for the stroll.

🐕Use it to make memories, snap some photos and share them with us in the comments below!

These beautiful sisters are Bluebell and Pikarua ♥️

At just four months old, they're such lovely, confident cats, and visited us recently for their second vaccinations. While they were here, we cleaned their chins as they had a lot of blackheads - you can see from Bluebell's video how happy she was to have her chin cleaned, and how much dirt our nurse, Talita, cleaned off her!

An overactive sebaceous gland on the chin, often called 'chin acne' as it leads to blocked hair follicles and blackheads, is actually quite common in our feline friends. You may notice yellow/greasy discolouration or flecks of black on the chin. Cleaning the chin with an antibacterial wash (such as chlorhexidine) usually helps to clear up the problem in mild cases, and using ceramic food bowls, rather than plastic, can help keep acne at bay. If your cat has been known to suffer from acne, cleaning their chin after feeding can also help!

🩺 Part of our ethos as a practice is delivering exceptional care. We want to ensure that we can offer this to our pet patients (and patients of neighbouring practices too!) so any serious or more complex issues which already come with added stress, are dealt with by a team you have come to know and trust and in familiar surroundings for convenience. Investing in our equipment, team expertise, and welcoming visiting specialists means that we can deal with almost any eventuality in-house.

If your pet requires a referral for further investigation or to see a veterinary specialist, we welcome pets from local practices. This ensures they too can receive exceptional care, locally, without having to be referred to a centre, often some distance away.
