It’s Rabbit Awareness Week and the perfect opportunity to bust 3 of the most popular myths when it comes to bunnies!

🐇“My rabbits are siblings and therefore won't mate”.
Rabbits will mate even if they are siblings and in addition, having them neutered can protect them against common cancers of the reproductive organs.

🐇“My rabbit can have a guinea pig as a companion”.
Ideally, rabbits need to be in a bonded pair (ie another rabbit). This is due to varying dietary requirements and also so they can effectively express natural communication, vital to well-being.

🐇 “A rabbit will make a good first pet for my child”
Rabbits are not children's pets. They have very unique needs which need to be met for them to live fulfilled lives and they can also live up to 12 years old!

🌱 Do you recognise this plant?

This is ‘giant hogweed’. More importantly, a common and poisonous plant to pets.

It is even more dangerous as it can be difficult to diagnose due to the fact it causes a phytophotodermatitis reaction (needs exposure to sunlight). Pets often, therefore, won't show symptoms for a few days.

Both consumption and topical exposure (e.g. skin or fur contact) can cause severe symptoms and problems for our pets (and also humans!):

> Pain
> Blisters
> Swelling
> Blindness
> Itching
> Permanent light sensitivity
> Severe scarring

If you are concerned that your pet has come into contact with this plant:

Wash your pet thoroughly to remove the sap as best as possible
Contact us/your vet for advice immediately

Meet Megan 🩺

Megan is our Lead Registered Veterinary Nurse (RVN) and has been with our practice since 2018. She also previously worked as a groom at a dressage yard!

Megan loves to learn and since qualifying as an RVN in 2022, she has completed the Compassion Understood course as well as courses in animal behaviour and osteoarthritis/orthopaedics. She is currently working towards the Surgical Nursing Certificate as an additional qualification.

In Megan’s words, “I am proud to be Lead Nurse at Newton Clarke, working with our Head Nurse to continuously implement positive changes to provide the very best care to our patients. I find it very rewarding to nurse a patient back to health, taking care of them as if they were my own. There’s nothing better than caring for a patient and then seeing them going back home happy again!”

Her primary interests at work are anaesthesia, orthopaedics, inpatient care and providing the very best end-of-life care.

Outside of work, Megan is a talented photographer and videographer. In fact, you’ll probably see some of her photography featured on the Newton Clarke Vets website, Facebook and Instagram pages! She loves to spend time with her Jack Russell, Bertie, and cat, Severus, who was brought into our practice as a stray (and ended up going home with Megan, “just for the weekend” quite a few years ago!). She also loves horses and small furries (especially rats). Talk about little and large! Megan used to have pet rats and she would love to have more one day.

Megan is an integral part of our team and we are very proud of her and her achievements.

🩺 It’s Diabetes Week!

Diabetes is a relatively well-known condition in humans, but it also affects our pets and if not treated, can be fatal.

❓ Do you know the signs to look out for in cats and dogs?

Diabetes tends to be more common in pets who are overweight and approaching their senior years. Certain breeds are also more predisposed, so knowing the signs will be even more important (Dogs: Samoyed, Cairn and Tibetan terriers. Cats: Burmese).

Diabetes is caused by insufficient production of insulin (a hormone which controls blood glucose levels). The body is unable to use the excess glucose so instead burns fat and protein for fuel, which in the long term can lead to organ failure.

☎️ If you have any concerns that your pet may be showing these signs, get in touch with our team today.

💙 Remember, if your pet is diagnosed with diabetes, we are here to support you and ensure you can manage the condition at home so that your pet can live their life to the fullest!

☀️It’s National BBQ Week and when the sun is shining, having a barbeque is a staple favourite for many families!

Of course, our pets like to join in and with those puppy dog eyes, we often can’t resist sneaking them a bite. Besides the hot grill causing burns, there are a few common and lesser-known dangers for pet owners to be aware of:

🦐 Mixing food
Be aware that the increase in fatty foods and the mixture of meats can cause upset stomachs.

🦴 Bones & skewers
Meat on the bone can not only cause a choking hazard but splinter and cause serious internal damage.

🌽 Corn on the cob
Buttery, sweet and delicious, but for our pets, they can cause serious gut blockages so be sure they are kept out of reach.

Our top tip?
Provide your pet with a high-value distraction they can enjoy whilst you are barbecuing. This could be a puzzle toy, for example, to keep them occupied for a longer period of time

Double trouble!

Meet, Charlie and Cooper, the cockerpoos ♥️

They came into practice a few weeks ago for routine castration procedures and were full of personality! As you can see, they thought they were lap dogs and of course, both had to enjoy some cuddles at the same time. They were a joy to look after and we think our team quietly enjoyed the attention from them too!

Jasper, melting hearts everywhere! 🥰

This beautiful boy is a 12-week-old springer spaniel puppy. He came in to see Kate, one of our nurses, for his 2nd vaccination.

It didn't take many attempts to get the perfect photo - he was rather photogenic with those fluffy ears!

Jasper was the best Friday treat ♥️

✍️ You may think that all veterinary practices are ‘cat-friendly’, but there’s accreditation through the International Society of Feline Medicine (ISFM), which ensures veterinary practices adhere to a rigorous set of criteria making them truly cat-friendly.

Cats have unique needs, meaning they can find a trip to the vet extremely distressing.

Our Yeovil practice is an ISFM Accredited Cat-Friendly Clinic, meaning we are recognised for providing an exceptional standard of care to our feline patients.

You can read more about what makes us cat-friendly on our website and by reading our latest blog!

Meet Dexter, or to our nursing team, the most relaxed cat that has ever graced the consulting room! 🥰

This beautiful boy is 3 years old and visited our team for his 2nd vaccination after a course re-start, last week. Our nurse, Megan, said she could have snuggled him all day!

🐱 As an accredited cat-friendly practice, we recognise that because of their unique nature and needs, taking cats to visit a veterinary clinic can be very stressful, both for cats and their caregivers. Dexter however was calm, comfortable and enjoyed all the attention!

Dexter has also been on a diet since his last visit and we are pleased to report, his weight-loss journey is going well.

25/05/2024

🐇 If you have a rabbit in your family, then it’s highly likely that you have heard of myxomatosis. This is a horrible and highly infectious virus with a mortality rate of over 95%!

The disease attacks a rabbit's skin, eyes, lungs, liver and ge****ls. It can be transmitted to rabbits via biting insects, such as fleas, ticks, mosquitos and mites, as well as through direct contact with another infected rabbit.

⚠️ Unfortunately, there’s no cure which means prevention is key! Without vaccination, it’s difficult to prevent as being outside is a vital part of a bunny’s life.

Call our team today to book your rabbit’s vaccination and keep them protected.

Bella 🐱

Beautiful Bella visited our team earlier this week to be spayed and microchipped.

She was a firm favourite amongst our nursing team - rolling on her back, purring and padding her bed whilst they reviewed her pain score! It is safe to say that she was comfortable and making the most of the extra tummy tickles.

Bella brought a smile to our faces with her lovely little personality 🤍

📣 Remember, the deadline for cat microchipping is June 10th 2024, so book in with our team ASAP if needed!

Meet Matt! 👋

Matt is now our proud owner but has been on quite a journey to get here.

He grew up in South Wales and qualified from the Royal Veterinary College, London, in 2003. Immediately after graduation, he entered small animal practice and spent the next two years working at a large veterinary hospital in Buckinghamshire. He then moved back to London where he continued in small animal practice for five years at a very busy surgery in the South East.

In 2010, with a very young family in tow, he relocated to Somerset and started work at Newton Clarke Vets. In 2013 he became a partner in the practice with Mark and Tracey. Initially, Matt ran the very small surgery on Wyndham Hill before overseeing the relocation to our new and current premises on Preston Road.

Matt now splits his time between clinical work at both Yeovil and Sherborne, alongside running and developing our ever-growing practice and team. He’s continued to develop his skills in ultrasonography and now carries out cardiac assessments in both cats and dogs, including screening for pre-clinical heart diseases.

Outside of work, at forty (-something!) he likes to keep fit and enjoys nothing more than a walk on the southwest coastal path (or a weekend in the mountains, if time allows!) with his wife, Pippa, and their two children, Amber and Bryn. They also have two young cats called Mike and Sully who certainly keep Matt busy, and life entertaining!

Beautiful Maisie fell victim to a troublesome grass seed last summer and was the perfect model for this post! 🌱

During the warmer months, grass seeds can become a real problem for our pets. Their long, pointy, sharp shape means they can easily become embedded under the skin or enter the body, causing issues.

All dogs (and cats!) can be affected by grass seeds, but should you walk through longer grass, your canine companion will be at higher risk of one (or in some cases, many!) becoming stuck - commonly in the paws (between the toes), ears, eyes, or entering the respiratory system through the nose.

Stay on the lookout for:

🐾Excessive paw-licking
🐾Lameness/limping
🐾Head shaking
🐾Ear scratching
🐾Signs of infection (heat, redness, discharge)
🐾Weepy eyes
🐾Unusual swellings
🐾Coughing
🐾Sneezing
🐾And changes in breathing

If you’re worried about your pet, give us a call - the sooner grass seeds can be removed, the better.

We are pleased to report that Maisie made a full recovery and was back out enjoying her walks soon after!

Summer may be approaching, but Cloud and Rain are bringing the sunshine this morning! 🌥🌦

These beautiful felines visited our practice a little while ago in preparation for the microchipping deadline. 3 weeks today on the 10th of June 2024, it will be a legal requirement to have your cat microchipped by 20 weeks of age.

Be sure to make an appointment with our team if you still have yet to get your cat microchipped. It will give them the best opportunity of being reunited with you, should they ever find themselves away from home.

🐱🐱In the meantime, can you guess who is who?

Thanks to Cloud and Rain for being the puuuurfect models for this post 🥰

🐍 As the UK’s only venomous snake, adders can be a threat to our pets - so, it’s worth being aware of what action is needed if your four-legged friend is bitten.

Adders only tend to bite if disturbed or are scared and this most commonly happens between June and August - but given they’re out of hibernation from February to October, they pose a risk now, too.

Left untreated, adder bites can be life-threatening.

We’ve listed the first aid steps to take if your pet is bitten by an adder, but remember - URGENT veterinary treatment is required, so contact our team immediately (or a local vet if this happens while you’re away from home) and head straight to the practice for treatment.

What does it mean for our pet owners to be registered with an independent practice?

We are proudly independent and sit uniquely amongst a sea of corporates in the local area. For our pet owners, this means:
🐾 We manage our practice ourselves, without requiring authorisation from a Head Office. This allows us to change quickly in response to feedback from pet owners and team members alike.
🐾 The people that you meet day to day, who treat and care for your pets, are the people responsible for making the decisions that keep our practice running smoothly and progressing.
🐾 The decisions that we make in our practice are to improve pet care, owner experience and team wellbeing; they are not based on directions from shareholders to achieve financial targets and goals. We reinvest in your pet’s care, in our facilities, in our equipment and extensively in team training.

We are proudly independent and will remain that way. Our new Sherborne practice (pictured) and introduction of VidiVet are two of the latest investments we’ve made, and are the perfect example of why we will continue to remain independent!

Deceased cat 🐱

Sadly, we have had a deceased cat handed into our Yeovil practice. She is female, relatively young, grey and white in colour, and is unfortunately not microchipped.

She was found alongside the Chilthorne Domer road this morning.

If you think she may belong to you, please contact our Yeovil practice directly.

Thank you
