A very special post for the bravest boy, Zac!

Zac started coming for regular trips to the practice to see RVN's Lucy and Chloe and Vet Vanessa after becoming very nervous about trips to the vets. His owner found it hard to get Zac to come into the practice at all and this made the process of vet visits very stressful for both him and his owner.

In order to tackle this we decided that de-sensitisation clinics would be of great benefit to him to help his vet visits become a positive experience, this started by slowly introducing him into the practice with lots of praise and treats, although Zac was so worried that he would only take treats from his mum at first. We worked super slow with Zac to ensure that we did not rush him and we went at a pace he was comfortable with, sessions started with walking around reception and sitting with his owner and each week he tried less to head to the door! After a few sessions we worked on introducing him into the consulting rooms, eventually moving up to using the stethoscope and teaching him the command 'scruff' where we gently lift his scruff as we would for injections.

After lots of time and hard work by the team and his owner at home, we were able to re-start Zac's vaccination course and he is now fully vaccinated!

Well done Zac and owner, we are so proud of you both!

Pet Health Check – only £24.99!* 🩺

The festivities may be over, but your furry friends might still feel the effects! From gobbling goodies, to the excitement of visitors, the holiday season can take its toll.

💡Your pet can’t tell you what’s wrong, but we can:
☑️ Weight and body: That extra snacking, chilly weather and salty pavements can all add up!
☑️ Behaviour changes: The stress of changes in routine and noisy celebrations can affect your pet’s well-being.
☑️ Joints and mobility: Cold weather can affect mobility by making your pet’s joints stiff and painful.

Our expert veterinary nurses can spot and address any potential concerns early to ensure your pet starts the New Year healthy and happy! 🥳

❗Lets talk starvation periods.🐾

Did you know both dogs and cats must be starved for at least 6 hours prior to surgery and our juvenile and geriatric friends can be starved for as little as 4 hours. Water can be kept down until you bring you pet to the practice.

So what does this mean?
If possible feed your pet their evening meal slighter later than usual where possible and ideally then they can have a midnight snack as close to 12am as you can, this means that when your pet comes for surgery the risk of them becoming hypoglycaemic (low blood sugar) is decreased. Feeding later the evening before surgery can also help to eliminate the risk of gastro-oesophageal reflux, especially in our brachycephalic breeds such as our bulldogs/pugs/ flat nosed breeds.

PLEASE NOTE THAT GUINEA PIGS/RABBITS SHOULD NOT BE STARVED PRIOR TO SURGERY- please feed their normal diet and bring a pack lunch for them when they come in.

Please also be advised by your pets veterinarian as sometimes feeding times need to be differed slightly for various reasons and please make sure you read your pets pre operative information sheet when preparing for your pets surgery.

Bert and Ernie 🐹

These little chaps have regular trips to the practice to see RVN Chloe for regular weight checks to make sure they are a healthy size.
Keeping an eye on your pets weight is important part of making sure they remain healthy and happy, we also absolutely love piggie cuddles!😊
