π€© Barney π€©
This extremely handsome chap came in to see our vet as he had a bit of a bothersome ear.
Our vet did an ear exam and after taking a swab and looking at it under the microscope π¬ found that he had a yeast infection.
Cytology is the study of cells, their origin, structure, function and pathology. This means that we can get a correct diagnosis and prescribe the correct treatment.
Hopefully Barney will be feeling much more comfortable after a few days of treatment.
Well done for being such a brave boy Barney π€©π₯°π«ΆπΌ
π RVNβs = Really Versatile Nurses! Or Registered Veterinary Nurse for the proper title!
As we like to keep on trend with the most current social media platforms, we did this little video to showcase just how versatile our nurses are! This is just a small collection of roles our amazing nurses preform on a daily basis πππ

Seren has special feline Nurse clinics and is our feline advocate and Nurses Vikki and Jo have special desensitisation clinics, also our Nurse Eleanor has a special interest in rehabilitation clinics.
π Dental Nurse - Our Nurses are trained to administer local anaesthetic (and preform nerve blocks) take dental x-rays and preform scale and polishes.
π Scrub Nurse - they are responsible for preparation of the surgical patient, setting up theatre and prep, working out and drawing up drugs used for the procedure and lots more. They make the operating day go smoothly and efficiently.
π X-ray nurse - as RVNβs they can carry out and preform x-rays, they can also become radiation protection supervisors meaning that they carry out maintenance checks and preform health and safety checks.
π Theatre nurse - this includes assisting the vet in surgery, as well as preform schedule 3 surgeries themselves.

On examination it was found he had some ulcers on the tongue, potentially caused by a virus. But we hope, with some medication to help he will be on his way back to his normal eating habits.

π€π€ Hector π€π€
This absolutely beautiful baby is Hector an 11 week old Dalmatian puppy. Who got into a spot of bother Saturday morning.
His worried parents call to say that he was crying out in pain when he went to eat his breakfast, so we said for them to come straight down.
Because he was so painful he wouldnβt let us look in his mouth properly, so our vet Sarah advised that we give him a bit of sedation so we can have a proper look to see what the problem was.
On examination it was found that Hector had been stung on the tongue, and vet Sarah had pulled a sting out of his tongue!
After examination of the sing under the microscope it was confirmed that it was a bee sting! π
Hector was give some medication to help with the inflammation and after being a bit sleepy for the rest of the day will hopefully go on to make a full recovery.
As you can see we all fell in love with him and he was in no short supply of cuddles π₯°

πββ¬ Letβs talk about cat carriers!! πββ¬
We all dread getting the cat box out from the shed, garage or wherever we may store them. Then we have to have a battle to get them in it! BUT there is a better way!
One of the main things is making sure your cat has a positive association with the box. Our top tips on how to achieve this includeβ¦
πββ¬ Have the box set up at home at all times, with the door always open.
πββ¬Place this in a nice calm and quiet area of the house that the cat has access to.
πββ¬ If you can have the box raised up off the floor as cats like to sleep and relax up high.
πββ¬ Make it a nice comfortable den for your cat, and drape a blanket over the top so they can go and hide in it if they want.
πββ¬ Place some tasty treats in the carrier for your cat to find.
πββ¬ Use calming and relaxing sprays in the box.
πββ¬ Do not ever force your cat in the box.
We have put together a short video on how you help you and your cat with transportation and choosing the right cat box. We hope this helps.

We just wanted to give you an update on Autumn and her progress. She has been coming to see our nurse Jo for her desensitisation clinics for a few months now.

Autumn also had two other guests in her appointment, nurse Eleanor and our student nurse Reigner. She did so well and worked very hard even around these new distractions.
If your pet is a bit fearful of the vets then why not give us a call to see if these appointments could benefit them β¨ππ

We are so very lucky to have not one but two nurses who offer these clinics. Scratch board training can help manage keep their nails short, a much easier alternative to having to clip the nails. It was lovely to see you again today Isla πππΌπ₯°

βοΈ Thunderstorms βοΈ Thunderstorms can be unpredictable and scary for our pets. Because of the uncertainty on when they might pop up means that it can be quite difficult for us to desensitise our pets to them. Our nurse Jo shares some top tips on how to desensitise our pets to a thunderstorm. In a recent thunderstorm today she captured just how calm her dog Luna was during this storm, proof that this training can pay off! Jo and Luna put in a lot of work at an early age making sure Luna would be happy and confident when such situation would happen. So letβs find out how to do just that, and remember you can train this at any ages, but from a puppy is best. Joβs thunderstorm desensitisation top tips βοΈ start from a young age, you can absolutely do this from a puppy and it is advisable that every puppy had this training! βοΈ play thunder sounds from YouTube at a quite level first. βοΈ remain calm and chilled. βοΈ give your pet a treat for calm behaviour. βοΈ do this for 1 week then turn the volume up a little. βοΈ again remain calm and reward your dog for calm behaviour. βοΈ if your pet starts to get distressed by the noise at the higher level turn it back down and start off at the lower level again. βοΈ remember we are rewarding for calmness. βοΈ you can also play the thunder sounds when they are eating or having a stuffed toy with treats. βοΈ we are adding positive (the food) to the sounds of thunder. *this can also be done for the sounds of fireworks! During the thunderstorm βοΈ keep everything as normal as possible. βοΈ reward for calm relaxed behaviour. βοΈ if your dog has done the training before they should just think itβs part of everyday normal life and not be bothered. But if your pet is scared and or in training for this some top tips to help scared pets through a storm areβ¦. βοΈ remain calm! Pets can absolutely feed off our energy, so if we are anxious and nervous
π€© Ralphs vaccination π€© Come with us to do Ralphβs 2nd puppy vaccinations. We do everything we can to make their experience as positive as possible, so we set them up for success in the future and love coming to the vets. This is how we achieve a positive association and experienceβ¦. π€© use super tasty treats π€© see them on the floor where applicable (note Ralph had already had his main puppy vaccinations and was being given his 2nd L4 today). π€© giving them a lick-e-mat, this helps to focus their attention on something else rather then the vaccination, and allow for a βforce freeβ restraint As you can see Ralph didnβt even realise he was having the vaccination as he was super focused on his tasty treat. #fearfree

π©»π¦· Come do some Dental X-rays with us π¦·π©» Featuring the very gorgeous Rosie π who came in for her dental procedure yesterday, and had three teeth out. Dental X-rays are so important to help us assess the health of the tooth, as we can visually assess the tooth root via the x-ray π¦· Fun Fact adult cats have 30 permanent adult teeth!
The dreaded scales! We have seen lots of different styles of pets going on the scales here at Abbey Vets. But never have we had one reverse onto them π Luna best have her hazard lights on when reversing!
β€οΈ Sinus arrhythmia β€οΈ This is quite commonly an incidental finding while monitoring our patients when under general anaesthetic. Sinus arrhythmia is most prevalent in young, healthy patients and is an indicator of good cardiac health. So for our nurses monitoring the anaesthetic itβs actually one arrhythmia that we are happy to see! In simple terms the heart rate will speed up when the patient breaths in and slow down when they breathe out, as you can see on the video and was found during a routine castration procedure on a dog πΆ Our nurses are highly skilled in knowing what is normal and what is abnormal, so they can alert the veterinary surgeon straight away. They continually monitor the patient while under anaesthetic and record the findings on the anaesthetic form, this helps them to see patterns and trends with their vitals, as well as making sure that patient is safely asleep for the surgery π΄ and this all aids for a much nicer recovery too β€οΈβπ©Ή
Clever Rolo showing off his tricks π
Our team had a special visit from the Easter Bunny this morning π° π£ Donβt worry all eggs and chocolate were accounted for and kept under lock and key, put safely away from any animals!!!
π Luna π This little lady Luna had a slip during her agility training resulting in her having a few painful trigger points in her lower back. Trigger points are localised tender points within the muscles that can feel like nodules, commonly refers to knots. Luna was feeling a bit sad and painful, so she went to see the wonderful vet Zoe who did some acupuncture and laser therapy on her back to release the tension. That evening Luna was feeling much better and back to playing with her toys and running round as normal. As you can see from the video Luna loves her laser therapy and was also a super good girl for her acupuncture, and will soon be back to her agility training again.
