Really good advice, especially for over Christmas when your routine might not be as normal and there might be more people around. Stressful for dogs, as well as sometimes being stressful for us!

A fabulous week of walks and 121s. I accompanied a client and her dog to the vets this week following a behavioural change, and found out that her dog is likely in pain. She was a brilliant owner booking her dog in the day after I mentioned that this might be a factor in her dog’s behaviour and her dog is now on a pain trial.

80% of behavioural issues are due to pain (statistic from Canine Arthritis Management). Don’t feel bad about not knowing your dog is in pain, dogs are masters at hiding it and it’s often something we don’t see. The Canine Arthritis Management website do a free webinar course called Is My Dog In Pain? And it’s a brilliant resource to look at, whether you think your dog is in pain or whether you just want to do a general check in to see how your dog is.

There can be many symptoms that point to pain, whether that be an awkward or uneven gait, licking, touch sensitivity, growling, amongst others. I’d definitely recommend watching the webinar I mentioned above and booking in with your vet to potentially start a pain trial if this is something you’re worried about.

Today is a bit windy outside and with Dobby’s noise sensitivity and bins and trees being blown all over the place, if feels safer to be indoors today! Dobby is instead has had a chilled morning and is now enjoying some enrichment.

Recall is one of the most important things you can teach your dog. In a world full of distractions, focus upon you and wanting to come back to you is such a valuable tool to have in a dog’s skill set. It can provide them with freedom to go off lead, to explore, and you don’t have to worry about them going up to other dogs or anything else you don’t want them to do!

My dog, Dobby, is quite scared of other dogs due to being a rescue with lack of socialisation and being hurt by some bigger dogs. Having unknown dogs come up to us can make walks more stressful than they need to be - and this seems to be happening a lot at the moment!

If your dog goes up to another dog and won’t come back it’s a risk - you don’t know whether that other dog is friendly/reactive or contagious. This can be a huge safety concern. It can also make walks more difficult and you can begin to dread them.

Two clever pups today.

The first one had a bit of a scary time with a new life belt that’s been installed by a lake we walk by. He was given choice about whether he wanted to investigate or turn back, but he walked past instead with lots of focus upon me (and maybe a treat or two!). Clever boy!

The second boy is coming on so well. The confidence he and his owner are showing is wonderful to see and they’ve come so far! He’s listening, focusing despite a world of distractions and is beginning to find it a lot easier to loose lead walk. Well done! 👏🏼

Please also wipe/wash your dogs paws after walking as grit salt can cause burns and be poisonous when ingested.

I have honestly laughed so much with these pups today 🥰😂 absolutely madness in the snow ⛄️ having so much fun, I love it!
(Yes Dobby is included because he also looks cute in the snow 😂)

Some very happy puppers on their walks and pop ins today! I think they loved the snow 😂⛄️❄️

Also a fabulous indoor 121 too, with owner and puppy working very hard on settling and being calm around the cats in the household. Well done 👏🏼

I might be running slightly later than normal due to being careful and traffic on the roads.

A lovely day looking after these guys today!
Such a happy end to the day when one of them who’s had lots of pain and issues with her back recently started playing! Warms my heart to see her feeling much better 🥰🥰

A sniffari on today’s training walk. We’re working on loose lead walking and sniffing can be so calming in between activities! 🐶🐶 happy boy.

Proud of this one on his walk yesterday! His owners have been working very hard on loose lead walking and you can tell! I took him out for a training walk and he was so, so receptive and did super well! Such a good boy 🥰
