Did you know that here at Medivet 24-hour Shrewsbury, we have hydrotherapy facilities?
As well as sessions with our veterinary nurses, we also have a qualified animal physiotherapist - Emma - who visits the practice routinely.
Emma is the first port of call when starting any physio programme. She will assess your pet’s requirements and construct a plan to be followed over the coming weeks.
As well as hydrotherapy, Emma provides services such as laser therapy and acupuncture. If you’d like to discuss physiotherapy options for your pet, please call us on 01743 465554.
Here is Bramble (our head veterinary nurse Laura’s dog) demonstrating the hydrotherapy tank in action! Bramble has hip dysplasia so this type of exercise gently supports and strengthens her 🦮❤️💦
This week, rather than introducing you to a staff pet, we want to share the story of a very special little cat whom we have all come to know incredibly well over the recent weeks.
Columbus, an 11 month old kitten, initially presented with dyspnoea (difficulty breathing) and pyrexia (a high temperature indicative of fever). Following extensive tests including imaging, urinalysis, and many kinds of blood test, Columbus was diagnosed with FIP - an infectious feline coronavirus (not to be confused in any way with covid-19) which was, until very recently, a death sentence for those inflicted with it. In fact, it is suspected that Columbus’s brother died from this disease.
However, thanks to a breakthrough anti-viral treatment - Remdesivir - now licenced for use in FIP cases, there is hope. Remdesivir is a product which has to be administered for a course of approximately 85 days via various methods including IV and subcutaneous injections and oral medications.
As you can imagine, this length of treatment and the ongoing hospitalisation for such cases can be costly. However, thanks to the efforts of the Stray Cat Rescue Team West Midlands., Columbus now has the very real chance of a long and healthy life ahead of her.
At Medivet Shrewsbury 24-hour, we have become a ‘hub’ for Remdesivir which means we will now be keeping vials of this medication in stock so this life-saving treatment can be started as soon as possible.
Enjoy this video of Columbus enjoying head rubs during one of her early IV Remdesivir treatments.
Pheramonetherapy ... 😍
Never underestimate the power of stress reducing pheromones. This handsome boy came in to be castrated a while back. Cairo was very scared and nervous being in such a strange place...after spraying some Pet Remedy on his bed he quickly turned into a completely different cat! ❤
As a team, we do as much as we possibly can to help limit stress for your fur babies, so it makes our hearts super happy when they respond like this ❤😍❤
Ares enjoyed a nice cool off in the hydro tank today for his hydrotherapy session after such a warm day. 🌞 💦 Hes a very good boy in the tank and enjoys the odd bribe to keep going 🙊. He even starts talking when he wants another one but he struggles to walk and eat at the same time 😂🙊. We look forward to seeing him next week! 💦💙
⭐ SCRUFFY ⭐
This little superstar saw our vet Ana this week for a dental and had quite a lot of teeth removed.
With some nice pain relief on board and plenty of love from the nurses, he just couldn't resist falling asleep having cuddles with our SVN Jodie 🥰
