🚨 Protect Cats from Antifreeze Poisoning! 🚨

As temperatures drop, it's crucial to take extra care when using products containing ethylene glycol, such as antifreeze and de-icing sprays. These substances are highly toxic to cats, even in small amounts, and can cause severe illness or be fatal if ingested.

To keep your feline friends safe:
🐾 Store all antifreeze products securely and clean up spills immediately.

🐾 Consider switching to a propylene glycol-based antifreeze, which is much less toxic to animals.

🐾Consider de-icing your car the manual way, even if it leads to cold hands.

Signs of antifreeze poisoning include vomiting, lethargy, and difficulty walking. If you suspect your cat has come into contact with antifreeze, seek urgent veterinary advice—early treatment is critical.

For more information, visit the Cats Protection website: https://www.cats.org.uk/help-and-advice/health/antifreeze-poisoning

Let’s keep our pets safe this winter! 💙

RABBIT VACCINE UPDATE

There has been reports of a new strain of RHD (rabbit haemorrhagic disease) taking lives of rabbits in mainland Europe. It has yet to be reported in the UK, but it's only a matter of time.
A new vaccination has been produced which provides protection against the new strain.

It is recommended that all rabbits are vaccinated with this new vaccinealongside the usual triple vaccine, to ensure full coverage against all potential strains of RHD as well as myxomatosis.

We would especially stress the importance of this vaccine to households who have rabbits moving in/out such as breeders/rescues/people with multiple groups of rabbits.

Currently this vaccine is difficult to get hold of and only available in large group doses (hopefully this will change soon!) so we are organising for anyone who wishes to have this to visit the brilliant team at Evolution Exotics Referrals in Cleobury Mortimer, who are charging just £40 for this vaccine.

If you would like to arrange this vaccine or a regular combined vaccine please give us a call!

Is your New Years resolution to eat less chocolate?
Are you left with selection boxes full of the chocolates you don't like?
We need you!

It's definitely unusual for a vets to be asking for chocolate- it's toxic to dogs and cats! However we have begun offering it as a final treat to pets being put to sleep.

If you have any spare chocolates that you need a home for, we would love to take them off your hands- just pop them in at reception*

*We make sure to keep them out of the way of prying noses or hangry nurses!

As the year wraps up we have looked back on our 2024.
This year we welcomed so many clients and their pets into our family. We also welcomed 4 new members of staff- vets: Ceri & Georgia and Patient care assistants: Dawn & Poppy. We can't imagine life without them now!

We celebrated many of your pets achievements- from birthdays, to weight loss success, to re-launching our braveheart awards for some of our bravest patients!

Our nurse's highlights has to be their trip to the BVNA congress- we're still using freebies and knowledge gained now. We're super proud of Ella for beginning her student nurse training, and absolutely smashing it.

We launched our online booking service and struggled with new parking rules! We also treated our own pets a horrifying amount of times (staff pets are the most unlucky!)

We always love some charity fundraising, from food and toy donations, to sponsored activities to our new photo competition-something were hoping to expand next year!

We couldn't have had such a lovely year without our lovely clients and pets, we hope we managed to pass on even a little joy to you this year. We look forward to seeing you next year!

🔴 What Are A**l Glands and Why Do Dogs Have Them? 🔴

A**l glands are scent glands – some people refer to them as “a**l sacs.” They range in size from a pea to a kidney bean, based on the size of your dog. They're located on either side of the a**s and lie between the external a**l sphincter and the smooth muscle of the re**um.

These glands are lined with secretory-type cells, which have numerous modified sweat and sebaceous (oil) glands. These two features within the lining of the gland produce the lovely foul-smelling liquid that contributes to the issues.

When all is right with the world, these glands are emptied when your dog (or cat) p**ps because the external a**l sphincter compresses the glands against the faeces within the re**um and the sacs empty as a result.

The purpose of all this is so that dogs can mark their territory. The smell left behind on their p**p acts as a "smell signal” for other dogs passing by. It is also involved with social interaction – the reason dogs sniff each other’s butts!

Since each dog's smell is unique to them, by sniffing each other they learn things like: have they met before, is this dog a friend or foe, or do I like them. Nature and its wonderful way of communication at its best!
So, as you can see, they DO serve a purpose, even if it isn’t a pleasant-smelling one.

However, sometimes a**l glands can be a troublesome to some dogs, these guys have to have them emptied manually as the body doesn't empty them naturally.

Symptoms of blocked a**l glands in dogs include:

🐾 Scooting (dragging bottom along the ground).
🐾 Nibbling and licking the a**s and/or lower back.
🐾 Pain when pooing or when their back end is touched.
🐾 Straining to poo.
🐾 Sitting down or looking around at their back end very suddenly (due to discomfort).

Blocked a**l glands are usually easy to treat. Your vet will examine your dog's bottom and carefully express their glands – which often solves the problem.

If your dog’s glands are particularly painful or infected they might need additional treatment such as pain relief and/or antibiotics.
If your dog’s a**l glands can’t be emptied manually, your vet may suggest flushing them under sedation or general anaesthesia.
If your dog has frequent blockages, your vet may recommend regular checks and emptying. A**l gland removal is an option for dogs with long-lasting issues, speak to your vet for more information.

💥Never attempt to empty your dog’s a**l glands yourself unless you have had instruction from your vet, and are confident doing so. Squeezing them incorrectly can cause serious problems. 💥

We offer a**l gland expression clinics here at Sutton farm. Bonus, if you are on the Medivet healthcare plan as these clinics are all included, just ring the practice and get booked in with one of our lovely nurses.
