A sad story - A deceased male black and white short haired cat has been brought to us from the Radbrook Area. He is microchipped but the contact details for the owner are out of date. In circumstances where a cat disappears, most owners prefer to know what has happened - The "not knowing" is worse than finding out the worst. So a sad post but one we felt compelled to write in case someone out there was anxious about their missing cat and wanted to know whether he was alive or not. Please call us on 01743 369 999 if you think he could be your missing cat. Thank you, The AHC Team

🍫Chocolate: Easter Eggs
Chocolate contains a substance called theobromine which can cause some concerning signs in our dogs, if ingested in high concentration it can be very serious.
The severity depends on type of chocolate and size of dog so its always best to keep chocolate treats out of our dogs reach.
Remember that dogs can quickly snaffle an Easter chocolates during Easter egg hunts!
Clinical signs of chocolate toxicity usually occurs 6–12 hours after ingestion, so we need prompt response after a patient has snaffled those snacks!
Worryingly, if left too long signs may progress to more severe symptoms.
🍫Hyperactivity
🍫Polyuria (excessive urination)
🍫Ataxia (wobbly)
🍫Rigidity or tremorsand seizures.
Devastatigly in severe ingestion cases we can see:
🍫Tachycardia/bradycardia (worryingly fast or slow heart rate), tachypneoa (fast breathing) cyanosis, hypertension/hypotension (high or low blood pressure), hyperthermia (high body temperature) or coma!
If your pet has managed to get hold of a chocolate treat then call your veterinary practice immediately. If treatment is required, the quicker we can start it, the better.
Treatment may include:
✅ Inducing emesis (vomiting)
✅ Activated charcoal
✅ Supportive therapy for any clinical signs

Keep your dogs safe at Christmas with this post from The Kennel Club UK:
For many, Christmas is a time for sharing mouth-watering and delicious festive foods with friends and family. Although your dog may be high up on your list of loved ones, sharing certain human foods with them can make your dog very ill and could even be fatal.
Find out more about which foods to keep away from your dog at thekennelclub.org.uk/christmasfoodhazards

👻 🎃 Some Halloween advice 🎃 👻
In the run up to Halloween night, on a weekend we expect some spooky goings on.... Remember the dangers to our pets and the signs of unhappy, scared or uncomfortable pets.
🎃Happy Halloween: Petrified Pets?
Halloween is a fun celebration however we do need to take our pets into consideration in amongst the ghosts and ghouls!
🍬 Trick or treat🍫
Risks to our pets include chocolate toxicity and ingestion of sweets that could contain xylitol.
Please call your vets for advice if they get hold of any human food however as usual prevention is better than cure so keep animals away from Halloween treats!
🐕 Knock knock. Who's there? 👻
Because of possible disruption and fireworks dogs and cats should be kept inside where possible during Halloween night. It is also advisable to keep your pet in a separate room during trick or treating with a safe space to sleep. This may minimise the stress of the continuous opening and closing of the door as well as ensuring your pet cannot bolt from your home if frightened by strange and scary looking visitors.
🕯️Care with Candles🕯️
Candles add a spooky feel to many Halloween decorations however are a risk for both children and pets to knock over!
❌ Creepy Costumes
Although cute looking, a huge percentage of pets would much rather not be dressed up. Please be considerate of pets body language and ideally let them have a relaxing night away from the stress.
🔥 Fireworks🎇
People often use fireworks around Halloween.
➡️Please tell your neighbours in advance of you plan to use fireworks.
➡️ Consider silent fireworks
➡️ Always check bonfires for wildlife before setting alight
➡️Tell local livery yards and farms if you plan to set off fireworks
If you are an owner:
✅ Walk your pet in the light before treat or treaters and fireworks
✅ Provide a safe place for your pet
✅ Contact your vet in plenty of advance if your pet needs a prescription for firework anxiety.

For those that have rabbits 🐇🐰
The rabbit welfare association always offer some great advice on how to keep bunnies and the best ways to keep them entertained 😊
Contrary to popular belief, rabbits are very intelligent animals and require a lot of stimulation to keep them from getting bored and depressed.
As much as we’d love to, we can’t spend all day every day with our beloved buns, so how can we ensure they are happy in our absence?
☺️ Provide them with plenty of space so they can exercise and rear on their hind legs.
😄 Ensure they have bunny buddies to keep them company.
😃Give them plenty of toys to play with.
😁 Encourage their natural behaviours such as digging and foraging.
Remember, being a rabbit owner doesn’t mean locking them in a hutch all day, it means being responsible for their entire welfare and wellbeing - even when we’re not there.

Do you have a cat friendly home? 🏡 😺 A cats physical and mental wellbeing can be positively influenced by the resources they are given in their homes.
This floor plan highlights the key resources and how they can be spaced out. Take a look at your home and see if you can improve the layout of your cat’s resources. 🧐
Here are some general tips 👇
🔹 Food and water should not be placed next to each other
🔹 Keep food away from busy areas
🔹 Keep litter trays away from doors/busy areas and food and water
🔹 Have some raised and covered safe places and beds
🔹 Try placing scratching posts near doors, windows or their beds
