Are your calves suffering from pneumonia? 🫁

In recent weeks, I have visited many farmers who are confronted with pneumonia every year. And if there is one thing that was clearly visible everywhere, it is that the calves were covered in thick hair.

In damp or less ventilated sheds, moisture from the air condenses on the transitions between warm and cold surfaces. This can also be seen in the calves. The calf has a warm skin and the coat forms the transition to the cool air.

As a result, the moisture condenses there: the coat becomes wet and cold. 🥶
In this way, the protective layer in the coat is lost, causing the calf to cool down and have to warm itself up.

This costs a lot of energy. Energy that is not available for other development processes. The weakened calf is more susceptible to infections and also to respiratory diseases.

The entire back line of calves must be clipped, left and right 10 cm of the vertebra from neck to tail root.

Calves can be clipped from the second week of life. If the calf has been wearing a calf jacket for the first four weeks, it is recommended to clip the back when the calf jacket is removed.

In outdoor sheds, clipping should be done when the weather conditions require it. Clipping should be avoided at temperatures that do not exceed 0 to 5 degrees Celsius. At high humidity and temperatures above 5 degrees, clipping the calves is generally recommended.

In closed sheds with too little ventilation, clipping is recommended at any time of the year.

How do I clip correctly?
The entire back line needs to be clipped. So left and right 10 cm along the vertebra from the neck to the root of the tail.
It is recommended to combine the clipping with the dehorning. This is practical, because the calves are anesthetized at that moment.

What else should you pay attention to?
To protect the calves from the elements after clipping, the bedding should be well strewn at all times of the year. In addition, there should always be sufficient milk fed. In winter, it is recommended to increase the powder concentration in the milk replacer so that the calves have extra energy to regulate their body temperature. Clipping the calves is one of the many important measures to minimize the risk of disease.
Other measures can include vaccinations. But also good bedding, a perfect supply of colostrum and good stable ventilation.

A frequently asked question we got was "don't the calves get cold?"

The answer is no. You can compare it with your own jacket. You are still wearing the jacket, but you have zipped the zipper down a bit.
