Lady Anne Blunt drawings, paintings & photos sold off at auction …. Apparently the level of interest in the first lady of the Crabbet and Sheykh Obeyd Studs caught everyone by surprise.
It’s a long time ago now …. But fascinating!

Playing with pedigrees at Zobeyni 🥰

I love researching Arabian horse pedigrees. There is nothing like time to enable one to discover connections in history amongst groups of horses perceived as different today. Horses that qualify as both Crabbet & Egyptian, horses that are both Polish and Russian and horses that are Spanish but also part Crabbet and part Polish. It is fascinating! It is all about the legacy of a desert warhorse really 💜

This should be of interest to Arabian breeders, particularly those who love greys. With the increase in full genome arrays for horses, checking up on new information as it becomes available for our breeding plans should became easier.
Check out genome testing with companies such as Victory Genomics 👍

Recent scientific breakthroughs have shed light on the genetic mechanisms behind the greying process in horses and their connection to melanoma susceptibility.

The mutation is particularly common in some breeds, for instance Lipizzaner and Arabian horses.

The key to this phenomena lies in the Syntaxin 17 gene.

Researchers identified three variants of the gene:

G1: The wild type (this is the "normal" or original version of the gene which indicates that the horse will not go grey.)

G2: The variant has two copies of the duplicated sequence. The G2 variant is associated with a gradual/ slow greying process and has no apparent increase in melanoma risk.

G3: The variant has three copies of the duplicated sequence. The G3 variant leads to rapid greying and a significantly elevated risk of melanoma development.

A specific segment of this gene can be duplicated, and the number of these duplications directly influences both the rate of greying and the likelihood of a horse developing melanomas.

The more copies of this duplicated sequence a horse possesses, the more pronounced the greying process and the higher the melanoma risk.

Horses can carry between two and six copies of this sequence, depending on their genetic inheritance.

This discovery has profound implications for horse breeding, since through genetic screening, breeders can now employ tests to predict a horse's melanoma risk from an early age.

Using this knowledge, breeders can make strategic mating choices to influence greying rates and mitigate risks in offspring.

The study genotyped 1,400 horses and 78 breeds/populations and found the G3 variant, associated with rapid greying, is prevalent in 62 breeds, while the G2 variant, linked to slower greying, is found in only eight breeds.

This research could have far-reaching implications for understanding tumor development in horses and may pave the way for improved prevention and treatment strategies for equine melanomas.

So proud at Zobeyni!
Beautiful Arabian boy Zobeyni Magnus is this month’s cover star in the national Your Horse magazine. He is the subject of a 5 page feature on training Arabians to excel in dressage. I am so proud that he was bred here at Zobeyni by my own stallion Zobeyni Nurani.
He is a very lucky boy to be owned and ridden by Beccy Gant who adores his talent and copes with what she calls his “exuberance”! He’s just 7 years old so I am sure there is much more success to come.
100% Crabbet Old English breeding of course. I’m a Magnus groupie!

Memorial for Daphne Cocksedge of the Romac Stud.
Daphne’s family have asked me to find out who would be interested in attending a memorial for Daphne Cocksedge of the Romac Stud. The memorial is planned to be in Carmarthenshire in South Wales with venue and timing to be decided. Please could you email me at [email protected] or Message me with your email so I am able to let you know further details as they are organised?
Daphne bred Arabians for over 50 years with a firm commitment to performance ability, particularly in endurance and racing. She was generous with her time and knowledge to anyone interested in learning. Some of her dearest friends have stepped over the rainbow bridge before her.

Goodbye Daphne.
Daphne Cocksedge of the Romac Stud passed peacefully in her sleep at 4am today in hospital. She was interested to the end in how her horses were doing at home and with others. She had friends with her and knew her legacy was safe.
Her family will be organising a memorial service in due course. It is the end of an era.
